Video News Open Thread: Stephen Colbert and the DNC, Days 2 and 3
Welcome to Video News! My apologies for no official DNC video news open thread yesterday. But Oreo the Diabetic Pootie had a crisis at 3 AM yesterday, so Ginger and I were up half the night. Oreo and Ginger seem to have recovered in full, so we have resumed normal function.
Gratuitous Oreo and Ginger photo:
So. A lot of folks were mad at Colbert for being insufficiently anti-Hillary last time, so be forewarned: In the first two videos, he is still insufficiently anti-Hillary. So if you want to watch him to see what went on at the convention yesterday and the day before, please proceed, here he is. If you don't want to watch him, I'll place one of the good punchlines just below each video.

"Democrats brought out the Big Dog, potential First Ladies' Man Bill Clinton."
I really think that's how everyone should refer to him from now on! If we must put up with Her: "The President and the First Ladies' Man".

"President Wonder Bread" versus "The New McDonald's Angry Meal"
I do recommend that you watch this video below. You may decide that Stephen Colbert redeems himself:
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvkFkzpVYJ4 width:500]
"The Lesser of Two Evils," or is it "The Evil of Two Lessers"?
In other news, Bernie spoke to Texas Democrats yesterday! A 99er asked me to post this in our news thread, so glad to do so, here he is! It's a mixed bag, but he sure did get a nice reception. No offense to Texans, but I didn't realize how pro-Bernie you were! The YouTube video has faint sound but I couldn't figure out how to embed from Facebook and I don't know if you can listen there if you aren't signed up. So if you can, here's the link to the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TexasDemocraticParty/videos/10154425530404802/
If you cannot access that and want to hear Bernie, here is the video from YouTube - hold your computer up to your ear (or hold your ear down to your computer, whichever is easier). Enjoy!

This is an open thread. Please feel free to add videos in the comments, discuss the DNC, Colbert, politicians, video news, pooties, other furbutts, plans for the future, whatever rocks your world!
Comments
Thank you for watching Stephen Colbert so that I
don't have to. He is currently on my "Dead to Me" list although I still have fond memories of "the Character."
Whatever he does from now on to criticize Clinton is too little too late. Colbert damned a very good man with faint praise when it counted. Maybe this election is comedy gold for him, but it's left many of us with a terrible dilemma.
Thank you again, ec!

Colbert was one of the first to jump on...
the "Let's ALL pay attention to Trump" train.
Kept laughing about how hilarious it was going to be.
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISGjNeBENXw]
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
It might have been hilarious if his opponent was Bernie.
Thanks for the music!

You're welcome, LOL! (Good initials, by the way!)
For me, I want to know what's going on at the conventions without spending significant time actually watching the conventions. So Stephen's 6-minute or so blurbs fit my schedule. And provide an occasional chuckle. For those who don't want to watch him even then, I'm extracting a few chuckles. One more day, though, and it will all be over for another four years! (Unless Her Heinous or Mr. Tribblehead gets indicted; then do we have to have another nominating convention?)
Comedians do make gold out of strife and sadness. Sometimes you have to laugh or cry. I think I read somewhere that they are sometimes conflicted about that. I, for example, do a great Sarah Palin impression and was kind of hoping Trump would pick her as VP. But of course that would be a disaster for the country. OTOH, the whole process has been a disaster anyway.
Oh, I should mention John Oliver was also on Stephen's show last night, but it was also disappointing and not, in my viewpoint, interesting, other than the fact he was there.

I saw that Oliver was on but was afraid to
look, fearing to be disappointed. I'd like to remember him from before all this mess started.
I understand wanting to get an abbreviated run-down, though. Thanks again, ec!

He might have more to say on his own show, but for the MSM
network he was mostly about how Tim Kaine reminds him of a stepdad. Meh. I didn't embed it because regardless of political view, I just didn't think he was very funny this time.

A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma
That is good, JnH! I particularly love the wide fake smile,
and the repeated "that's a good question". Wicked!

I didn't watch a moment of either convention
My mute button is worn down to nothing. I do understand that the foreign policy section of Clinton the Second's speech was pretty hawkish.
Trump will likely stumble into a war. She will go in with her legion of neocon flying monkeys with eyes wide open.... We live in terrifying times.
That's our foreign policy dilemma, isn't it? Go to war because
the President is an idiot and bully, or go to war strategically?

Hypoglycemic shock? Karo rescue?
When the symptoms of hypo- and hyper- were explained to me, I thought they sounded the same. I just guessed low and went on. Hope all is back to normal.
Pup Skya got spayed and chipped today, and she is pissed! Awake and will not acknowledge by eye contact mean vet and tech. She will come home tomorrow. A Cairn terrier who I hope will say "There's no place like home!"
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
How old is your dog? We rescued ours intact when
he was already a year or so old. He's not destructive and never marks territory in the house, so we have been reluctant to have him neutered. A cat we rescued many years ago never seemed to forgive us for having her spayed, so that adds to the reluctance.

She is 6 months old (5.75 months) and I do not want
ro risk first heat, especially because she is a little bit of a roamer, pulling breakouts from fenced enclosures. So it was time, and now she is microchipped and I can send proof to her breeder and get AKC registration papers and also register her in NY as a neutered female, saving me 10 bucks a year and be legal. So all good for me.
Unless you want to breed him, why not? It should inhibit a little call of the wild, if you know what I mean.

I am all for getting them fixed.
And yet.... I have had a few special pets who I wondered, after the fact, if they should have had children. Like Ginger my genius psychic. She could have had genius pooties scattered all over the world by now! Who knows how much of a better world it might be?

He's some sort of mix so we wouldn't even know
what kind of dog to breed him with. We just don't want to earn his undying enmity. He's such a sweetie that he might still love us, but we're not quite sure.

Yes, exactly. I keep Caro in the fridge (does anyone know if
it will last at room temp?) and had to warm it up, then give him a shot (shoot the syrup down his throat). At 3 AM, of course I was dead to the world. Ginger woke me up by, finally, digging her claws into my wrist and trying to pull me up! Left deep scratches, but it was effective. So I went to check on Oreo, to find him struggling but unable to stand, swinging his head back and forth. I helped him stand and put his food bowls right in front of him while he leaned against my leg for support, but still he swung his head back and forth as if he didn't know what food was for. So I had him lie down again, went and prepared his syringe of syrup, put him on my lap and shot it down his throat. Fifteen minutes later, he was eating on his own. By dawn he was fine and has seemed fine since.
The vet thinks he is recovering from diabetes! Cats do that sometimes. Apparently it's not a sudden process, but gradual. So he was fine on 8 U of insulin until his first crisis. Then he was fine on 4 U until his second crisis. Then he was fine on 2 U until now. Now we have to go to 1 U. Maybe another month or two he can come off entirely. I hope!
I don't know how long Ginger was monitoring the situation before she woke me, but when I lay down to try to go back to sleep, she draped herself over my hip, went limp, and was asleep in seconds, as if "Finally! I'm exhausted!" We think she's the reincarnation of Lassie.
Poor Skya. The pooties loved their postop narcotics, so the pissedness didn't last long. I'm sure she'll be glad to be home!

I keep Caro
In the pantry and it has been fine.
I used maple syrup. NE tendency!

Do you keep that at room temperature after it's been opened? eom

Short answer: No.

How long have you kept an open bottle? I'm hoping, of course,
that he'll never need it again; but when he does, he needs it fast.

Are we talking about Karo syrup?
Sorry, I don't want to read the whole thread again. But if we are their site says it keeps indefinitely. How do I know? I looked it up because I have a bottle (non refrigerated) that's at least 5 years old.
Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur.
Yes. Wow, that's a long time! OK then, I don't have to keep it
in the fridge, good, that will make it a lot easier to use in an emergency (cold, it wouldn't be sucked up by the syringe; I had to warm it first).

Cats can also have seasonal swings in diabetes
and their need for insulin may wax and wane over time. This makes management very tricky! My vet told me about some cat patients they see who need insulin only during certain times of the year.
I'm glad your kitty is ok and has a friend watching over him. FYI you can also rub some caro syrup directly on the gums to get some sugar absorbed into their system fast during a crisis. I've had two dogs with diabetes, I know how stressful it can be to keep them in balance!
I did not know that! Seasonal swings, hmm? That's all we need!
Did the vet say if they tend to need less in summers?
I did know about the gums. He has never gotten to the point of complete unconsciousness except the first time, when I didn't know what it was and so took him to the vet. So I have been able to get him to swallow a decent size amount the times after that.

I have a campaign slogan for the DNC
"Quite possibly the biggest sore winners ever." Maybe we can get it sung by Tom Petty.

This gets to the heart of the convention
...and it's really kinda sad but worth the watch

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Thank you for the video and the link! Is it my imagination, or
do they all sound insincere? Maybe it's the nature of political speeches. But to my ear, nobody sounds like they have their hearts in it.

Seems all of them...
are sick at heart. I must admit it saddens me, but I'm dusting myself off and moving on.

What Are the Bernie or Bust Protesters Planning?
What Are the Bernie or Bust Protesters Planning for Hillary’s Speech? They Won’t Say.
"We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."
Interesting article. I don't like the "Bernie or Bust"
characterization though. I doubt they're that. If they were, why would they still be there? Bernie is gone. I think they're more the "get everything possible into the platform" and "hold Hillary's feet to the fire" people.

Alligator Ed, you seen this?
Apparently, on Sunday Judicial Watch learned (doesn't say how) that instead of Clinton thinking her server would be convenient, that someone (not known who) TOLD HER it would be convenient.
He also says the new emails (from Comey) should come to them before long.
Ah, found the story - Judicial Watch: Depose Hillary Over New Email Server Admission
'What we are left with is an agency mandated to ensure transparency and disclosure that is actually working to keep the public in the dark' - Ann M. Ravel, former FEC member
Or is this just more lies and spin from HilLIARy?
Even under oath, I doubt that anything she says can be trusted. She lies constantly, with and without reason, about anything and everything under the sun. Even when the truth would serve her better, she lies, lies, lies. It's as if it's a compulsive behavior - and maybe it is.
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
Thanks for that! I find the fact that Judicial Watch is about to
receive and release thousands of Clinton emails under the FOIA more interesting than the "new story" she told on 60 minutes. I find that to be a little bit of a stretch, but IANAL. If I said "I did it for convenience," that doesn't rule out that someone told me it would be convenient. Especially if Clinton didn't know much about computers, which she claims sometimes, then how would she know if someone didn't tell her?
But to be able to examine all the emails the FBI did, that would be delicious. Hopefully we'll find the pay to play scandal there.

I'm ok with them getting the extra headline space
But I do think it's a distinction WITH a difference in light of her having said 'it was allowed' - not a point they raise here (but goodness knows their briefs go on for many tens of pages, so they could well have argued this).
The other thing is that so much of what seems SHOULD stick never does. Maybe something which seems unlikely to stick actually will. Throw it ALL at the wall, I say. We only have a few months left to get her replaced on the ticket (I'm ambivalent about whether that's my first choice at this point, but it seems the most efficient line).
