After China suffered defeats in the first and second Opium Wars as well as the First Sino-Japanese War , the Guangxu Emperor began issuing edicts ordering a series of reforms which were intended to cause widespread changes in Chinese society, culture, ideology, education a and institutions. This did not sit well with the old guard and on September 21, 1898 Empress Dowager Cixi seized power in a coup d'etat, ending the Hundred Day's Reform (or Wuxu Reform) which had actually lasted 103 days.

Fifty-one years later, on September 21, 1949, the People's Republic of China was proclaimed.

this.

Impossible weekend, but this was all written, loaded, queued up & screwed up last night.

After filling the publish on fields, I did a quick lst preview and then forgot to save, so it really wasn't queued up all the way. When I discovered that, I erased those fields and tried to "publish now" but it would not accept an empty date for the "publish on" field (or else the default 0:0:0 time so I had to make a fresh copy and publish it.

mea culpa and maxima sorry for that.

everybody be well and have a good one.

We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.

last night and, having done the bottom and the top of the music, just went with it and missed/skipped Don Felder and also David Hood (Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section). Maybe a couple more too.

Glad you picked up on it and filled in with that.

Exclusive: Shell launches major cost-cutting drive to prepare for energy transition | Reuters

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-shell-costs-exclusive-idUSKCN26C0GI

Shell now wants to focus its oil and gas production on a few key hubs, including the Gulf of Mexico, Nigeria and the North Sea, the sources said.

The company’s integrated gas division, which runs Shell’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations as well as some gas production, is also looking at deep cuts, the sources said.

For downstream, the review is focusing on cutting costs from Shell’s network of 45,000 service stations - the world’s biggest - which is seen as one its “most high-value activities” and is expected to play a pivotal role in the transition, two more sources involved with the review told Reuters.

Take good care everyone.

starting to transition. I saw a report where they figured that we were at peak demand right now, with demand due to drop very seriously by 2025 and with most of the world's petroleum reserves becoming unneeded and unwanted. Meanwhile other, more sanguine sources are predicting that the petro sector will now launch, push, promote and otherwise saddle us with a veritable plastics explosion with we need to be ready to resist.

Biofuels are problematic and whst are lubricants

The review of refining operations also includes finding ways to sharply increase the production of low-carbon fuels such biofuels, chemicals and lubricants. That could be done by using low-carbon raw materials such as cooking oil, one source said.

I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.

up top, whimsical. It's raining here today, which is very welcome. So far it's a gentle rain so it's good for my seedlings.

Speaking of wildflowers, Texas mallow, white brush, and Senna, are in full bloom and fragrance here. The hummers and birds like the mallow. Butterflies, and bees go for the white brush, and all of them go for the Senna.

Thanks for the OT e.l.

When anyone brings up the subject of the presidential election. I will remind them we have secret ballots in this country and say that I prefer to keep my vote secret. At my age, I don't have enough friends still alive to have any more of the remaining ones stop speaking to me because I won't promise to vote for Biden.

I don't do Facebook, never watch MSDNC, but I'm pretty sure what sort of hysteria they are promoting these days based on what has been ranted at me. There is no logic with these people.

I would like to think there are a few thoughtful people out there who are not either rabid Trump or Biden supporters, but if so, they are not mentioning politics to me. Maybe that is the cue that they are sensible people, their not bringing up the election and voting.

@Granma

(and been fired by) a number of friends in the last 4 years, I'm inclined to agree with you. I'm down to very, very few friends indeed at this point, and I'm hated equally by the fierce partisans on both sides among my ex-friends.

Politics is now the ultimate third-rail topic in my meatspace encounters. I now really only talk to other atheists... That is indeed the cue: if they don't bring it up, I'm sure as hell not going to either!

@usefewersyllables
another couple the other night and we limited our discussion of electioneering tactics, and specifically tactical blunders, why Biden will likely lose because of stupid tactic a or b or a+b, etc. and ignoring who is worst candidate and who we might decide to vote for, if anybody.

there with the crowd I'm in contact with, but I will keep that in mind for use in time of need. I usually simply say I'm not into discussing politics, or candidates, situationally.

Granma's picture

@enhydra lutris The subject is brought up by others, including family members, and starts with "You're voting for Biden, aren't you?"
At the beginning of the primaries, I might have asked someone what they thought of the current crop of candidates, or if they were watching any of the debates, but that was a long time ago. Answers then taught me to avoid the subject in future.
