Defense Industry Revenue Forecast Gushes Over Global Turmoil

The global aerospace and defense industry is out of its doldrums. According to a new report by the accounting firm Deloitte, “the resurgence of global security threats” promises a lucrative “rebound” in defense spending.

Morning Open Thread - Wed January 6, 2016 Police Brutality

For last week's Open Thread I wrote about the precipitous rise in police killings in the United States even though overall crime has been going down during the same time period.

Police are assassinating people at alarming rates and while overall crime has been going down, the rate of murder by cop is rising. This year, nearly 1,200 people have died at the hands of police officers, most of them shot to death.

Saudi Arabia—recently chosen to to head a key United Nations human rights panel—on Saturday executed 47 people convicted of "terrorism," including at least four convicted of offenses related to political protest.

The year 2015 is nearly over and what have I learned during the past year? I learned that it was a difficult year for family issues. But beyond that, I learned that the more things change, the more they stay the same. I am in the twilight of my years and I am still searching for answers as to why we human beings are so inhumane to other humans.

Texas Storms, Tornadoes Leave at Least 11 Dead Around Dallas Area

A new line of storms was barreling through Texas on Sunday as officials worked to assess damage from a series of tornadoes and severe weather which left at least 11 people dead overnight.

Authorities said the full extent of the damage from Saturday's spate of storms was not yet known — but warned the region should get ready for another hit. Forecasters warned of more "severe" weather and heavy rain.
