META – How Down-Voting Destroys Communities

Everyone here has seen this happen. It's an experience we have all shared.

Every community has an elaborate drama they cloak around the bedrock-destructiveness of down-voting. The belief is that the community must be armed with a weapon to defend against a line that must not be crossed. In the end, down-voting is pawned off as "democratic." The community manager says, "Let the users decide." But it is really nothing more than cheapness and laziness that results in negligence toward the entire community.

Let's look at how this works.

Help Wanted

There is an opening for the Tuesday Open Thread if anyone would like to take/try it. If so contact me via Private Messaging or the "Contact Us" link in the header at the top of the page, or let me know in this essay. To PM me click "Messages" in the header at the top of the page, then click "Write new message" and type my username (JtC) in the "To" field and type the subject and message then click "Send message".

In addition we will be going offline periodically the next week or two for regular maintenance and updates. I'll try to do most of it late at night, probably around 12:00 midnight central time. I'll try to keep the downtime as brief as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Thank You

I want to take this opportunity to thank all the content providers, commenters, readers and those that just lurk without registering.

Thank you to all essay writers, from the prolific to the singular, you folks are the structural backbone, the raison d'être.

Thanks to all who publish the weekly open threads and weekly series, it's not easy doing that week after week, you folks are the community backbone, the personal heartbeat.

The Mother of All Destroyers (Updated)

“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”

Many years ago, if I remember correctly it was 2009-2010, I was a member of a vibrant left leaning blogging community that was about the same size as this one. In retrospect it very much reminds me of c99p and I know several of our members here were also members there and may recognize the scenario that I'm about to expand upon. As a matter of fact much of the design and concept of this site was borrowed from that site. There are many similarities.

But there appeared a dark cloud on the horizon. I personally witnessed this community destroy itself.

Meta - Downtime

We had a corrupted database table yesterday (Sunday). I spent the whole day trying to correct it, to no avail.

The solution was to restore the database from early Sunday morning's backup. I was able to save the essays that were posted after the backup was created (about 5:00 Sun. morning), but not the comments. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Font Changes

Afternoon folks.

I changed the site font. Did you notice the All Caps are gone? The only way to get rid of them (caps) was to change the font.

Give me some input as to how the fonts look on your machine/device. Too big? Too small?

It's impossible to please everyone, but I hope to strike a happy medium.

OK, let me have it, I've mummified myself in bubble wrap!
