Friday Photography - Rock Painting … or Signs From the Past

Mars, sure was close to the moon last night. That must mean something?
p.s. for the naturalists among us, I’m pretty sure the rock is sedimentary breccia, but one of these days I’ll ask a ranger to confirm that. It looks similar to photos I’ve seen of rock formations in Death Valley which are considered sedimentary breccia.

Janis, your last photo makes me wish I were somewhere with a tropical breeze. It's cold and snowy here again.
I don't have anything again, but I saw my red-breasted nuthatch again today; I hadn't seen him/her for a while. I also have about a dozen house finches hanging around. No redpolls yet.

Seeing the close-up of the peacock’s neck gives me a whole new perspective on the bird. When I first saw it I thought, “a blue turkey?”
Maybe you can hang some light, small flags, and pretend when the wind blows ; ).

Yep. Great memories of my time there. I went during winter once and I was just one of the few people there. I went cross country skiing in the valley and looking up at the frozen Waterfalls was incredibly beautiful.

Thanks magi for pointing that out! Saw when I double checked. That makes it even better, very cool. Great birds those Ravens... sooooo smart. Smarter than some large voting blocks in the U.S. methinks. I get to see them regularly and several times a year get to see one turn upside-down in flight just for the fun of it, often calling when they do. Which requires quite the level of understanding...

Female Spinyback Spider
Female Spinyback Spider (Gasteracantha cancriformis). Of course males are about 1/100th the size of females, little tiny things. These females are only about 1/2-5/8" across.
This gives a better idea of the yellow color but was overcast, it is neon. There is a white color form with red spines!
This is a Scoliid wasp eating pollen from a Huisache Daisy. These are about 2", the pale bands on abdomen were way more yellow than showing in the pic.
This is an Opilionid. These are the Harvestmen, aka Daddy Longlegs. Which are not spiders. They just look like them. Note they have an all-in-one body, thorax, head, abdomen is all one piece/unit. Spiders have two body segments, the cephalothorax and the abdomen. Insects three: head, thorax, adbomen. This is a fancy colored type of Opilionid I have not gotten to ID'ing. This one wouldn't stop moving and I didn't get a good shot.

That is the spinybacks own orb web. One day it was vertical as we often think of them, a couple days later it was perfectly horizontal, parallel to the ground. I have been known to remove spiders from the local butterfly garden here (those big giant Argiope), as well as crab and lynx spiders that just sit on flowers and take butterflies all day here in our little bit of butterfly garden.

Beautiful pictures from all.
It seems that anything would call this picture home. The deer lay in it. The snails, salamanders, snakes, mice and birds, to name a very few, make it home year round. Never a place for the squeemy to look under.
Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.

but lying on top of it looks very cushy. Nice to know deer have a comfortable place to sleep and others to live. Thanks Pricknick.

The scariest encounter I had sailing solo thru the Stellwagen Bank, North of P'town, Cape Cod. Heard a loud CRASH, turned around to see a huge humpback breaching. I guess it was being territorial and was trying to chase me away. It breached again about 100 yards off. Yikes! It was much larger than my little yacht, and I could only make about 7 knots. So I asked very nicely if she would let me be on my way. A truly majestic beast when beheld up close.

Sometimes I talk to trees. When the soul is open, I do believe I can hear them somewhere in my bones. It's a different language, very broad, almost beyond understanding.

q, There is this old growth redwood that I have mentioned that I hug on my walks up in the Pogonip. Over many months. I listen. Slowly I have felt a very low, slow vibration coming back. Wolhleben says trees live in a different time scale than we do. And it is much s l o w e r. How to say this - I am now sensing a very low vibration as I stand next to the tree, heart to heart. I have a lot more to sense I think. Perseverance furthers. Plants know a lot. Wohleben says they talk via chems at the tips of their roots that are transmitted by the web of whateveritis that is in the ground under them. Fungus of some type. Just like our dendrites do. And parts of our brains. lol.

I feel it more strongly when barefoot in the summer, standing above the roots. Hard to describe the sensation, but definitely have the vibration when I look up into the branches. The vibe is very large, seems I've only perceived a small spectrum, but enchanting nonetheless. thx

an alligator surfaced alongside the canoe. We did some silent talking to it, and then some serious paddling.

Manhattan Rocks

Wonderful pictures of some very interesting rock formations. There are so many different variations with their own unique characteristics.
When I was in college, I had to take a science class that had a lab. I didn't want to take something difficult like biology, so I opted for what I thought was going to be very boring. Geology 101. Turned out to be one of my favorite classes.
On a field trip to Central Park, our professor showed us the mica schist piercing through the landscape, pointing out the striations across those formations where the ice age glaciers had left their mark.
And here's a fun fact: if the island of Manhattan had not been sitting on a bedrock of mica schist, builders would never have been able to build so many skyscrapers.
Who knew a bunch of rocks could be so integral to the existence of the iconic Manhattan skyline, eh?

you are geniuses with the camera, all, what I recognize
in them is that we don't have any wilderness left in Germany. Everything is plastered, forested and commercially corporatetively agricultured, at least the parts I see. I haven't seen yet the former East German parts of the country.
So, I think you need to be happy for what you sill have in wilderness in your home turfs.
