I have to thank Obama for making so many things clear today
I am ashamed of myself for taking the bait eight years ago. I knew better but I shut that all down and got swindled again. There were those who saw him for what he is back then but I ignored them. "Hope and Change" turned into Monsanto people being appointed right away and then the sell out on the banks and so much more.
I deplore the republicans for their racist stupidity because if they had any integrety at all they could have nailed him legitimately so many times.
So today the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize endorses the person who will get us into more war very soon.
We have no hope of dealing with climate change and inequality now. Agriculture was sold out at the beginning of his administration. Fracking will take out what is left of clean water and heroin will continue to flow in from Afghanistan.
You have to give him credit for being so smooth a con artist.
He was a part of the oligarchy's set up from the beginning. He must really be laughing at Bernie right now.
We re in deeper trouble than anyone can measure at this point. Revolution is the only answer I can see, but we are no where near ready to talk about it. The idea of political revolution was a start. It must go on. A real revolution means that we take care of the people's needs while we carry it out.
I was close to the leaders of Solidarity in Poland. They learned it fast after Marshal Law nipped their ill prepared false start in the bud. The next time around they took care of food and services for the people and they won.
Today was a dark day for the emperor's new clothes showed all too well.

Agree
today confirmed that we have no real allies within the political system. For real change to happen power and leverage must be built up on the outside until there is enough critical mass(leverage) to hold power over those on the inside.
If anyone has any doubts about the exact reason that the Democratic administration orchestrated such a heavy handed and visible crackdown on OWS recent events provide the answer - it is this type of movement building that scares the crap out of the establishment. Elections are nothing more than Kabuki -an illusion of democracy.
Time to stop playing into their hands.

Thanks GG - means a lot
I've been coming to this conclusion for the last eight years but today a few disparate things have happened that have lead to this. Two things are the Warren endorsement and the speed with which many who I've considered allies have jumped behind Clinton as if the last few months never happened.
I am 55 years old, physically fit, and am fortunate enough to be married to an extremely supportive spouse and am not answerable to an employer - this means that I am in the incredibly lucky position of being able to to protest and basically take this to the streets (non violently by my choice) - I know there are many who feel as I do and I suspect that this is going to be a long hot summer here in Chicagoland.

Besides, she never said that
The saying was in circulation back when she was in diapers, or even before that. It's been traced back to the Ancien Régime of Louis XV, and may be older still. It may have been La Pompadour who said it - she (and not Louis) has been credited with "Après nous le déluge" (After us, the flood). Or it may predate even her.
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
Don't know if i knew of that before...
but it was his meeting with Big Pharma behind closed doors durning the ACA hashing-out (theater?) and his insistence that we move forward and not look back (concerning W and Cheney). I knew in my gut that those two moves were awful and it took me awhile to understand, all the while listening to the likes of Ed Schultz and Thom Hartmann. Confusing! I remember defending him.
But yeah, we were taken, those of us who voted for him. Well, f him.
Didn't know that Warren has endorsed HRC, although I did see a chummy looking pic a few weeks ago and that was a pic I'd like to un-see.
Are they really just trying to drive us insane with all this theater? I'm sick and tired of living in opposite world for most of my life now.

Me too, brother...
I've always known about Hillary and Bill, and I believed Obama in 2008. Didn't take long to get set straight. I think Steven D here is right to focus on the future, and having "demands" is a start. I'll be curious to see how this thing in France turns out. I think it might be another turning point.
Work for the future, yes, but don't forget the lies
of Obama which would fill books. And, Hillary promises more of the same.

France is weird to us, and strikes are cool
We got trained otherwise, and forces against us are way more militarized. Even locally. So mass demonstrations, all peaceful could be responded to with blood. That is scary for Americans, especially after our outside wars are voluntary enlistments and then casualties suppressed. And we are used to bloody shootings and car wrecks. But getting hit or shot for being angry?
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

An idea is not responsible for who happens to be carrying it at the time. It stands or it falls on its own merits.
That is kind of what I have advocated for years...
a strike of ALL workers (sans nurses and such) on Labor Day, preferably the whole weekend. Somehow do not think that employers can fire the entire work force, but then again there was Reagan v the air traffic controllers, so who knows.

This is the correct and effective direction.
Then scale it outward. Not "scale up," which implies making everyone consume something, but scale out: let everyone organize as they see fit, maintain contacts and coordinate without an overarching structure. Independent cultures, linked cooperatively together.
No more Big Culture. After all, that is really what joins the US together: this idea of belonging to a certain sunglasses-wearing, look-and-feel consuming group. It is identification through outfits, what one drinks, wears, hears are simply part of The Uniform.
Peace and love be with you, reader.
Doing only this...
...would require great caution. We don't want to be in the circumstance of the peasants in Monty Python's Holy Grail, where we are educated and intelligent but still having to work the muck while the ignorant, but wealthy, nobility ride by and deign to speak with us to fulfill yet more of their needs.
The Republic is dead. U.S. democracy is gone. We are protected merely by a few ragtag remnants of the Constitution that our nobility will flush away once they become too bothersome for them. The attitude of our political upper echelons has changed to consider us no more than the cogs in their gigantic printing press of personal wealth. We are in serious trouble, imho.
The Holy Grail was satire.
In real life, the 'King' would be tender and tasty.

exigent circumstances forced the PTB to toss more than crumbs (e.g., the New Deal). This time they're prepared. Militarized police forces. Surveillance state. Internet kill switch. They've been expecting civil unrest and they're ready. Build community; local systems of support are always a good idea. Crumbs aren't likely to extend beyond more widespread access to weed. I disagree
with 'stoner's don't take to the streets' part of your comment. If I remember correctly through my haze days they did take to the streets peacefully. Now slacker stoners are a whole different story. The millennials among my family and acquaintances are stoners but have a lot of courage behind their convictions. The worst opiate of the people is the freaking TV and most young un's I know pay it no mind. They may be stoned but their wired to world wide net and are quite capable of hacking right into the switches that google and the biggies online decide need to be pulled for thought and speech crimes. Hillary's condescending talk to young people's 'rebelliousness' will just egg them on.

Yes I live in SE Portland
close to the river in the Hawthorne district. I have lived here since 1992. I chose this neighborhood because it had 'demographics' that ran the gamut. Even though we're being invaded outside and in I do believe we will prevail. The honking SUV earth destroyers of the yuppie hipsters now parked wall to wall on our 1914 streets are indicative of what going on as far as city's globally go, Scary that. Hey it's cool we got salted Carmel ice cream parlors built into the holes in the wall 'retail space' under the Soviet 80's style monstrosities that the city. The developers and the savvy global investors think Portland will give them good ROI's. Demolishing Portland is a Democratic project. It's green as the climate refugees are coming and they need some toxic expensive prison style housing and salted ice cream from holes in the wall below,. Sorry for the rant but you did ask.
Yup, I did inquire - and feel free to unload for cathartic value
We're fairly new here, relocated for health issues but not hipsters or SUV drivers or any of the unwelcome arrivals you assail. Down I-5 a couple of hours, dissuaded from the attractions of PDX by some of what you list. Looking forward to more exploration up that way, though. We moved from Bernie country.
"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society." --Jiddu Krishnamurti
Sorry 2and fro
I didn't mean to go on a get off my lawn tangent in your general direction. Like I said it's the way of all cities theses days. I really don't blame people who move here my real gripe is with the Democratic 'progressive' city government and planners who have decided to literally bulldoze and demolish Portland and build a new city for rich people, in the Dubai mode. Welcome to Oregon. It really is a great place to live.
I can't understand why the bent pols are destroying the very thing that made this city a livable community, green and affordable. Were thinking of moving to a small town somewhere near the southern Oregon coast .Our business is electronic and based from home so we can live most anywhere. Our old house is worth a fortune as this neighborhood is the 5th hottest real estate district in the country. We get letters weekly form realtors or developers who want to buy our house. They say a nice young couple want to buy your house for cash, as is.
I apologize for my rude reply. We had just gotten back from driving across town and I was depressed and distressed by seeing the siege in action. Like with national politics the local Democrat's here are corrupt and bent and not that easy to unseat. I'm glad people like you are moving here. This so called rigged election is getting to me be it for city consul, major, governor or president. I do like Senator Merkley wish we could get more pols elected like him.
No apology necessary, really!
We're in Eugene; similar issues with the city council, razing of perfectly good bldgs, secret deals to sell off beloved public square, inadequate attn to the unhoused, sweetheart tax deals for developers of unneeded bldgs, attempts to subvert neighborhoods with zoning changes. It's everywhere. We fought it in tiny Middlebury, VT (pop. 8,000).
I like Merkley, too. Heard him speak w/ Tulsi Gabbard at local Bernie office. Not happy with timing of his statement that it's time to bow to Hillary: after CA and before the anticipated fight at the convention. That was a calculated career move, and I don't approve. At all. Will be keeping an eye on that young rising star. He just wiped out the courage he demonstrated in his endorsement of Sanders imo.
Anyway, don't berate yourself. I didn't take your comment personally, and I share the sentiment.

Maybe those in charge will toss out other peanuts: more $15/hr minimum wage victories and a small Social Security increase and maybe, just maybe, a real chance at Medicare for all before the boosts in premiums for ACA marketplace policies cause big problems later this year. And figure that's enough to pacify the angry people. But the people are still gonna need jobs. Or a guaranteed minimum income. Gonna be interesting.
Disappointed but not surprised that Sanders won't continue his campaign outside the D Party.

being asked, and then thought about later even more deeply if they were profound.
But then again my circle of "stoner" friends may be atypical.
However I don't think so.
Honestly, I always suspected that one of the biggest reason cannabis was made illegal, outside of money, was because it led to increased questioning about the reality of things and whether or not they really did need to be that way.

But these days he prefers to skip the buzz and get the medicinal benefit. Amazing how the stuff has been bred for specific properties across the array of what's now available. "I used to vote Republican & Democrat, I also used to shit my pants. Eventually I got smart enough to stop doing both things." -Me
OR's pretty swell, our choice when we had to leave VT for
health reasons. No warm-water beaches, of course, but stunning coastline and lakes and mts and desert and rainforest and pleasant temps at least half the year. An impressive array of ecosystem types and climates. And where we are, almost no mosquitoes and--oh blessings--NO BLACKFLIES! Wonderful fresh produce year-round, much of it organic. Political compadres, a truly wonderful thing. Great micro-breweries and decent wineries and natural beauty to stop you in your tracks. Lots of boats, sail and motor. Uber casual lifestyle and laissez faire attitudes. A lifeboat destination for those thinking about climate change. Oh yeah, and legal weed.
You can shed socks probably 6+ mos of the year, and jackets are mostly for the rainy season and wind, east of the Cascades. OR was the #1 relocation destination in the country last year, and the housing market where we are remains robust. If you think you might want to make the move, do it soon, or hope for this housing bubble to burst.
Have you and your wife spent time here? We're still newbies but have no regrets about choosing OR.

FL med will be on the ballot this year.

I don't think we know that. Do we know that? Has Sanders
said that? I think he may be hoping something happens at the convention. But if it doesn't, then he will go third party. But he can't say that now or the Dems will tell him to go now. He wants to maximize his influence at the convention, then decide based on what happens there.

Why, because they're too busy eating twinkies? That's a tasteless generalization imo.
Tasteless, as in Twinkies? ;) Not enough crunch for the munchies
Drugging the restive populace one way or another is a classic ploy. Booze, prescription pills, dope. Even sugar (corn syrup in damn near everything). Infotainment. Kardashians. "Superstar" of the one-season show. Selfies. Addiction to handheld screens to exclusion of senses that directly interpret the world around us.
Sure, could be a tasteless generalization, but the point is that drugs literal and otherwise are a form of the circus half of "bread and circus" that keeps eyes turned away from caesar and the senate and focused on the coliseum. Early and effective crowd control.

DON. Look deeper... You may be missing the real story
I was confused an out today's endorsement
Not Obamas endorsement... THAT should have been seen as a given
But Elizabeth warrens endorsement... Which should have NOT happened today... Because it's seen as EW selling out to the oligarchy and pouring salt on a fresh progressive wing wound inflicted by the WH.
And then I read a one sentence tweet about today's WH presser... And the admission that HRC is "under a CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION by the FBI"
And today all of a sudden made sense...
the oligarchy MUST do everything it can to wipe the criminal investigation off the media websites, tweets, FPes et al and the only thing BIG ENOUGH to do that is EW getting off the bench and endorsing HRC and so tonight the party will try to control the damage by changing the subject... I did read an interesting comment that pointed out that BIDEN has still not endorsed HER...
and now I wonder if it's because BIDEN/Warren May well need to be ready to enact PLAN B
I also wonder if Obama leveled with Bernie. Today. And let him Know that the FBI investigation is not pro forma, it's CRIMINAL.

scalding opinion piece against Warren
A scalding opinion piece over at New York Post that also dishes up some dirt from her past:
http://nypost.com/2016/06/09/endorsing-hillary-is-the-just-latest-sign-t...
Warrens endorsement really hurt my opinion of her and that
saddens me greatly because I have been a huge admirer of hers.
But I thought she was a person who had the strength of her convictions and would stick to them.
Better she just didn't endorse at all, or waited until after the convention at least before supporting someone who is so obviously against the stuff you have been fighting for.
Would I still vote for Warren if I had the Chance? Absolutely!

Obama is a horse's ass.
In 2008, Obama said Hillary was just awul on everything and would be a terrible President. In 2016, Obama thinks she is the best thing since sliced cheese. How the man can say and do what he does with a straight face tells me what an deceitful and manipulative person he is. Didn't trust him in 2008, and he proved why within 20 minutes of being sworn in.

Especially when, as HIS Secretary of State, she
1. was the leading advocate for intervention in Libya, the aftermath of which he called his presidency's "worst mistake."
2. went 4 years without a congressionally mandated Inspector General in her State Dept., which he allowed. Means he has some responsibility for the serious lapses and lies the current IG reported.
3. used a home server (initially unsecured) exclusively for official and sensitive State Dept. business, which he must have known and didn't stop. And which they both knew contravened protocols. Means there, too, he bears some responsibility. Her actions are on him, too, and sully his administration.
4. sold 20% of the US uranium-containing land to Russia. Russia! And then Putin made a sizable donation to the Clinton Foundation. In fact, the whole murky pool of activities when she was SoS, with arms deals (more arms sold than during Bush II's 2nd term) and the donations that subsequently flowed to the foundation. Not to mention the low % of the foundation's funds actually directed to charitable work and repeat filing of revised taxes.

I just read the AIM report.
My response comes from a fellow c99p'er in another essay:

Have I told you lately
that love you dkmich? Me, I put on my boots on and hit the streets hustling his pocket full of hope. My moment of 'Uh Oh' came when Senator Obama voted for FISA. I quit the day after my precinct boss was not surprised she said 'do not give up on the movement that Obama has empowered it will be back. Even so I never expected his administration would be as horrendous as it has been. Bejeejus what a farce.
I felt bad for Pete Seeger
who thought something good was happening
dk, Markos said the same thing as Obama did
I still have a link to his article. He basically said that she was too much of a DNC party insider and a bunch of other unflattering things. Funny how 8 years erases people's memories of what they said. Good thing for the Internet, right?
Was Humpty Dumpty pushed?
You know, part of me still thinks he believed it....
Maybe I'm an idiot. He really seemed like he thought he could do some good, then as soon as he got in there, learned how things really work and all the favors owed.
But either way - yes - I got totally suckered. We all did.
And he's been a far bigger disappointment than I could ever have imagined. Even if he had accomplished nothing, it would have been worth something for him to keep calling out the problems. Nope, couldn't even do that.
the Monsanto appointments prove that he was lying
he had them lined up before the election
An idea is not responsible for who happens to be carrying it at the time. It stands or it falls on its own merits.
Yeah, you're likely totally correct, don.
The whole thing was probably a scam from day one. I like to believe I have a good intuition about people - but I was 100% wrong on that one.
Rahm, Geithner
all those Clintonites and Goolsbee was a Skulls and Boneser...you know, George W Bush's fraternity. (Kerry's too)
Purely
coincidental! LOL
Our village and town are so small that we don't have a village idiot or a town drunk. Nope, we all take turns.
And I think this is where some Tea Party
ugliness comes into the equation too. I too believed in Obama and some of my comments defending him now make me absolutely cringe. But there was a time when I would have done anything to keep the Tea Bags out, we all would have. And I think that too was part of their manipulation just like the fear of Trump is now. Bastards really did a damned good job at that. I willfully ignored the signs out of Obama because he was better than a Tea Bag, at least in the narrative the propaganda spun for us so devastatingly.
Only a fool lets someone else tell him who his enemy is. Assata Shakur
I just say that mention of M
as the major enemy is skeptical to me. But I was offered a job interview (by pre-interview) in grad school and declined to a higher purpose that paid for shit and dumped me out.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Monsanto and the Clinton's
not to mention Tyson Chicken were thick as thieves. As a health food nut it galvanized me when Big Dog declared Monsanto and GMO's as the only way forward in a stealthy move. No public input no if ands or buts Monsanto was the future so quit being anti-science and fall in line. Who better to play God then the makers of roundup and chemical weapons. Kill those bugs and kill the dirt, it's the only way to feed the planet. Yeah right.
Ken Salazar there's a blast from the past. Obama's administration is/was chock full of Clintonites excuse me for connecting the dots and thinking gee they must be in cahoots. Don't even get me started on the complicity of D's and R's since they got together and cooked up the DLC. Poppy's other son.
You've seen one redwood you've seen them all. So last month my Democratic city government gave out a permit legalizing taking out 3 redwood mature ancient trees to build a Shanghai investors wet dream.Sleazy developers are going to build another monstrosity an unaffordable toxic apartment complex on our neighborhood's main street.
I'll see your Monsanto and raise you a GE. n/t
21st Century America: The distracted, superficail perception of a virtual reality.
Wasn't he chief of staff?
Or was he in charge of the jobs programs? Funny since his company has offshored more jobs than any other company.
First was the FISA vote, then putting the same people who crashed the global economy back in charge. And of course they were the ones who were in Clinton's administration and set the f'ing crash up in the first place.
Yesterday there was a diary on LOF that said that Hillary isn't in the banks pockets and many people said that GS had no part in the economy crashing.
The delusion runs so deep when it's a democrat that does those things.
And thank god Obama ended two wars and hasn't started any new ones.
