Disability Caucus Open Thread 6/6/2016: Forced Entrepreneurship from Lack of Opportunity

I'm sure many disabled folks besides myself can attest to this, but many of us often do side jobs from home because of the lack of opportunity afforded us due to various conditions we deal with. In my case at least, it's not something I make much money with, if at all. You don't see too many people chomping at the bit to have boxes and boxes of pictures scanned, VHS videos or old audio cassettes digitized. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

2016 Desert Trip Report

"Desert Trip Report" is something of a misnomer, but not entirely. Most years we go to the desert and most such trips include some of the same locales and general activities. For many years now, our return has been largely via the coast. We had some hopes for a better than usual bloom this year, even though we were late related to the celebrated Death Valley Super-Bloom, but, frankly, we've seen better, more than once.

Look past pink and blue

photo bathroomAlisha_zps36bzzbbh.jpgThe title of this diary is also the title of a new campaign in New York City informing NYC's residents and visitors that they may use the restroom consistent with their identity.

With people comparing us to dogs, and saying we need to use whatever bushes and trees we can find for privacy, the campaign is very welcome.

The new campaign, which officials debuted Monday, includes real life transgender New Yorkers and tells people to "look past pink and blue" and to "use the restroom consistent with who you are."

The Birth of a Movement, the End of Democracy

Part I: Boy, I Hope This Doesn't Suck

I made a comment last weekend that Joe, gulfgal, and JtC asked me to turn into an essay. The gist of the comment is that arguing about whether we should be focused on electoral politics or not misses the point of where we are, politically, right now. It's been a hell of a slog trying to make it into an essay, because I'm trying to sum up where I think we are politically without writing a 6-book series and boring you all to tears! So, I hope this doesn't suck--and I beg your indulgence.
