The Birth of a Movement, the End of Democracy

Part I: Boy, I Hope This Doesn't Suck

I made a comment last weekend that Joe, gulfgal, and JtC asked me to turn into an essay. The gist of the comment is that arguing about whether we should be focused on electoral politics or not misses the point of where we are, politically, right now. It's been a hell of a slog trying to make it into an essay, because I'm trying to sum up where I think we are politically without writing a 6-book series and boring you all to tears! So, I hope this doesn't suck--and I beg your indulgence.

Gaming out a Community Strategy

There are a lot of folks talking about the next steps in a progressive political strategy going forward, beside the usual talk about who to vote for in the upcoming elections. Some folks who regularly inhabit the Evening Blues have put forward the idea that the time is ripe for a general community discussion about a community strategy for advancing the interests of the 99%. Outside of our community, there are lots of people and organizations thinking along the same lines.

Astronomy: Street Prophets Sunday All Day Brunch (Art)

Welcome to Sunday Brunch. This is an open topic thread so help yourself to the goodies and sit a while and let us know what is new with you. Yesterday was Astronomy Day. I have been interested in outer space all my life. I remember as a child Dad would take to the San Francisco Planetarium every time there was a new show. We watched all the moon landings. It was a special bond Dad and I had looking at the stars. As an artist I started out my graphic art career doing space pictures.

We Can Have a Living Earth Economy—But It Won’t Be Easy

It is very satisfying to point out the inequities in life, to rail against the obnoxious ones among us, yet in doing so we become the obnoxious ones. We become the person cutting into line at the grocery, or cutting off another driver trying to get out of the parking lot, just to secure our 'proper' place in line, but in reality just sowing more inequity behind us. Such counter-productive behavior is almost human nature; I myself can be obnoxious and casually, even unconsciously and inadvertently, spew inequities and insults toward others who will then cut me off as I try to exit the grocery parking lot later on today.

Passings

I am a bicyclist, I don't drive anything beyond two wheels and no motor. I don't go as far as I used to, as I have problems with my feet and my ankles. But I do the errands: I go to the post office, to the grocery store, to the water mill. Back and forth, same routes every time, along streets with pleasant landscaping and good dog fencing, because it is not fun to be rushed by loose dogs when bicycling.

Dear Bernie

Forgive me if this has already been posted. I signed it. I think it's right on. I especially like the suggestion to withhold Bernie's mailing list from the DNC. Unless the Sanders movement evolves from a presidential campaign into a real democratic organization, it will be extremely short lived.
