Open Thread - Friday, April 1, 2016

Hello, welcome to the Friday Open Thread. I'll throw some chum in the water to start the feeding frenzy. Plus, Jim Campilongo and The Little Willies!

A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

~William Shakespeare~

Welcome to the new members recently escaped from an abusive relationship. Give it time, things get better.

C99 came to be due to disaffection with The Daily KOS. A small group of DFHs voted.

From there it was.

The genesis of C99 was not about particular candidates, nor is the goal to be the anti-DKOS. C99 came to be based on the issues and values important to progressives. The objective is to have a place for people to share thoughts, knowledge, hypotheses, revelations, art and socialize. A sort of community gathering place for progressives. C99 is about the ethos of its denizens. People who appreciate thought provoking conversation, are respectful and civil. A multitude of issues are discussed here. Things like peace, corporate malfeasance, political corruption, stewardship of the environment, non-discrimination, inequality, corporate media, gender identity, economics, music, photography, labor and numerious other topics of community interest. Some of the topics have dedicated diarists, who are passionate and knowledgable.

Do you have a passionate interest?
Start a regular or periodic diary!

The other Caucasapiens would enjoy, gardening, a photo journal, a Monsanto diatribe, an artist you would like to share with the community, exposing ALEC, humor (dark and slapstick preferred), news from non-corporate sources, news from non-traditional sources, news from non-US sources, a green news diary, a technology diary or your pet subject.

I am not a daily visitor to C99. I used to be. DKOS too. But life got in the way. I need yinz guys to do me a favor. C99 is still evolving and prevalence of anti-KOS diaries gums up the front end making it tough to navigate C99. To be sure, it is cathartic and KOS ostracized a key constituency, but now it's time to put it on the ...

I challenge the new C99 citizens, to let it go. Use the energy to post content here. Have great discussions. When I come here, I would like to see the un-reported and under reported news. Along with progressive opinion pieces and thoughtful discussion. Most of all, I want a respite from the orange propaganda mill.

JtC contracted the C99 server/ISP and wrestled Drupal into the current site form factor. The site loped along for a little over a year before the DKOS purge. Almost overnight, membership has increased exponentially. The exponential traffic increase precipitated a couple of crashes and compelled a server upgrade. JtC is planning a software upgrade and some ease of use features. The site has no venture capital, advertising, nor a rich benefactor. Just some pretty chill DFHs. I encourage anyone who has some loose change to donate. The worst case scenario is that the site collapses under it's own weight, so let's work together to create our place. I am looking forward to reading your content and socializing with friends.

I will be absent from the morning frivolity. I have a road trip with my PALS that will keep me away until evening. Let me know what you think, but try not to be a jagoff. I will stop by to sprinkle music videos and tangential comments.

How about a country funk outro?

My Sweetie and went to see The Little Willies. Before the show, we were talking with the woman beside us and she said something like, "Look at all the Norah Jones groupies". I looked around and it was mostly middle aged men. I am a guitar enthusiast and opined that I thought it was guitar guys coming to see Jim Campilongo, our new friend disagreed. Lo and behold she was right! The Little Willies hit the stage, grown men started acting like tweenage girls at a Beiber concert. They were yelling things like, "Norah, I love you". The show was excellent.

Did you see how Norah was looking at me?

and I am sure your heart was beating a little bit faster... she is as much a real sweetie as I imagine your sweety is to you.. Thanks for your OT, I appreciate the message and everything that is in there.

Especially I thank you today, because it took you to make me aware that I am a wise woman.
What else better than that could happen on an April fools day. Smile

Hope you have a nice day, as well as everybody else.

I actually like freedom. The diversity on c99 is always interesting and often fun, and it doesn't bother me when I read ideas I disagree with. How boring it would be if everybody said the same thing all the time.

In one week, a group of my husband's crazy friends will descend upon us to ride the Assault on the Carolinas bicycle ride. I am going to be running a bed and breakfast next weekend. This ride started about seventeen years ago with only 40 riders and has grown into a huge event that brings riders in from all over the United States and even Canada. For two years in a row, over 100 Canadians came to ride the Assault. The weather and the scenery along the ride routes is gorgeous and the people here support it enthusiastically.

Each year the registrations close out earlier and earlier and none of the guys were registered before the closeout date (the day they hit 1,000 registrations) which came over a month earlier than last year. But a wonderful neighbor of ours, who is also riding it, has been working very hard to find transfer registrations and five of the six guys coming now have a registration. Next year, they need to register the day that the registrations open to be sure of getting in.

In the past, my husband and his friends have always ridden the 60K route, but at least three of the guys are now talking about doing the 100K which is extremely challenging. The route dips down into South Carolina and then has a more than six mile long steep uphill climb up to Ceasar's Head state park in SC before returning back into North Carolina. The climb up to Ceasar's Head is used by professional cyclists as a training ride. I keep telling my husband that if he decides to do the 100K, he will miss the awesome lunch that the ride always provides for the finishers.

Anyway, for now I have to figure out where everyone is going to sleep and how I am going to feed them all. LOL Everyone have a great day and thank you, Tim, for this wonderful Open Thread. Dirol

Just in case anyone from AZ is online and/or knows someone in AZ who had trouble in the primary, it appears the Sanders campaign is collecting data for a push to either recount or revote. You can post your information to them here: https://go.berniesanders.com/page/content/arizona/

I'm guessing the attorneys are looking at some sort of class action suit or possibly working with the ACLU to sue over election fraud. I kind of wish this would move faster and stay in the public spotlight, but I'm going to guess that the convention will have come and gone by the time this is resolved...

Via The Guardian:

“As Bernie Sanders is the political revolution, we are the media revolution,” he begins, talking in an easy, compelling style honed by years of broadcasting without the aid of a teleprompter.

“We [TYT] didn’t get to be this popular because I’m such a great host. That’s not how something this big arises. We got this big because we believe the same thing that the majority of the American people believe, and we’re almost alone in the media believing it.”

...“In the old days you were taught that you should be dispassionate, but I think the opposite. I hire a lot of hosts, reporters, producers and I hire people who care about the news. The old model, of being dispassionate, neutral: it doesn’t work online. That means I’ve got an opinion and I’m sometimes loud. But you can’t do a revolution quietly.”

That success depends on content and community (above and beyond a refuge from the GOS). During this transition, though, people who have felt silenced do need to bit of screaming room. I like meaty content, but sometimes we need to just rox/sux/rant. My main issue is that the rox/sux is drowning out the meaty content. And much of that rox/sux are short clips/paragraphs, not essays that would be better in a daily thread. So, I ask, should we start a new daily OT called The Daily Scream and encourage everyone to focus their outrage at GOS in there?

Gonna repost this comment in Gerrit's essay, too.

it would only make sense to me, if people, who write now rox/sucks diaries, would put those diaries as comments in the daily rox/sucks OT. I doubt that would happen, but it would be better, it would happen. It would be nice to get the shorter rox/sucks diaries or other short diaries converted into comments to get the recent diary list a little bit less crowded.

I really like our original OT of the old style, like NCTim and the other regulars wrote today and before. It was a gathering point in the morning as much as the EB is a gathering point in the evening. Gentle and friendly conversation, music, snarkalicious mockery and more was going on there, including comments about how your four-legged friends, your plants and birdies are doing or what kind of headaches you had after last night's .... It is a nice place to come together.

And I for once would like to forget about dailykos. I read what I want there anyway, no matter how much people think they can tell us/me what to read and what not.

I assume once the primaries and elections are over the rox/sux stories might get fewer. So, time heals all wounds and let grass grow over whatever it was that has hurt you.

I always would like to know the specifics of what made you hurt in the past. People have been on dailykos over a decade and have good memories. Many have not been or have not read as much (as I haven't) or have bad memories (as I do) and it's nice to know about your past on dailykos in context.

I have a hard time to find some comments I made years ago, which I regret to not find. I am pretty upset that I can't erase my diaries or comments over there (consequence of banning myself) and I am trying to find comrades in arms to call for a change in those polices over at dailykos. I have nothing to hide or really to regret or worry about, but as a principle I am against dailykos hijacking diaries and comments of banned persons and accounts. Apparently I am the only one who finds that unacceptable.

Ok, peace, I am longing for harmony. Smile

but I thought about this yesterday, having found this place inviting and 'more like things should be".

And one thought was that there needs to be a thread in which people, like me who have just come from the other side' can blow off a little steam, as is often said, so as to keep such frustrations from coloring other things.

Once at Smirking Chimp somebody posted a thread called "Flame On!" and vitriol was contained in there. It had inappropriate stuff but some of it was hysterical.

TOP needed something like that.

Window is now shut on that.

Unless it gets nixed by the moderators here. It would be a general rant/protest open thread... "OMG, I have to get this off of my chest" place. And I'll link to the "welcome new members" essay. I don't see it as a celebration of anger, rather a room in this community, that's soundproof and padded with lots of things to throw. Smile It would be for shorter posts. People will definitely still do some of the longer, essay length, WTF rants... as they do, on particular topics.

After months of not being able to speak our minds at TOP and DU or other spots on the internets... I'd hate to see censorship "for the good of the community." But it also saddens me that some of the meatier essays get lost in the community feed. So, why not let's have a room that provides an appropriate forum to bang your head against the wall and lick your wounds.

Reddit has deleted its surveillance "warrant canary" in transparency report:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Social networking forum reddit on Thursday removed a section from its site used to tacitly inform users it had never received a certain type of U.S. government surveillance request, suggesting the platform is now being asked to hand over customer data under a secretive law enforcement authority.

Reddit deleted a paragraph found in its transparency report known as a “warrant canary” to signal to users that it had not been subject to so-called national security letters, which are used by the FBI to conduct electronic surveillance without the need for court approval.

The scrubbing of the "canary", which stated reddit had never received a national security letter "or any other classified request for user information," comes as several tech companies are pushing the Obama administration to allow for fuller disclosures of the kind and amount of government requests for user information they receive.

Does c99p have a similar "warrant canary"?

if all the screaming from the poor darlings in pain on the left hand sidebar comment thread wears you down, follow my Red Green tip. I've run a strip of duck tape over the sidebar so I don't have to hear the screaming. When I go anywhere else, I just rip it off and stick it to the coffee table. I came up with the trick this morning and it helps. I hope it helps someone else.

from Netflix more than once in the past few years.

This is a true story. Passenger side mirror fell off my van, so I had a friend weld it back on. Fell off again, so I got out my duck tape and duck taped the hell out of it. Stayed on until the van was falling apart from rust (from going to the beach near Corpus Christi almost every other day.) Was still there when the roof was leaking and the back door wouldn't close right, and the van got hauled away to the van graveyard. After being Found On Roadside Dead one too many times.

My motto is: if duck tape can't fix it, nothing can.

As to C99, I just slide the left hand column completely off my screen and out of view, and the right hand column rolls under and out of view. That's for whenever I don't want to be distracted. If I'm involved in conversation, then I like both columns showing.

So true about duck tape. I always have a giant roll in the garage where the kids keep stealing it. When our youngest was little she asked for years for duck tape fro Christmas! We'd get here a bunch of rolls in all kinds of colours and patterns (3M is an evil corporation, but that's funny) She'd go magoo and make all kinds of "projects" all over the house, the little monster :=)

I'm on a mac and you know how stupid I am with computers. So you do a slidy-thingy with the comment sidebar how? I just tried it and all that happened is I lost and had to retype my whole reply to you!
