NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL
~

These articles speak for themselves. The protests are filled with average people willing and wanting to be arrested in order to change the dialogue. They are not radical. They are not anarchists, they are not Marxists, they are not socialists, though they have been called that by those who think naming them, as such, can shift the narrative.

Many protesters have neither time nor money to spare, and yet, now, they are taking time out of their lives to lay down on the pavement and block traffic, to glue their hands to windows, to turnstiles and to sidewalks. They are chaining themselves to fences, climbing tall buildings to deface them, stopping traffic on major thoroughfares, and blocking bridges. They have filled the jails while more people come to join them on the streets.

They are old and they are young. They are us. And they, as we do, fear for our Earth. We all want change now. We know we do not have time to wait for the system to change. It will not.

We are fighting the most powerful industry in the world. And that industry has no intention of stepping back nor stepping up.

Power to the people, right on.

This Is How Human Extinction Could Play Out
Rolling Stone 4-12-19

In 2015, a study in the Journal of Mathematical Biology pointed out that if the world’s oceans kept warming, by 2100 they might become hot enough to “stop oxygen production by phyto-plankton by disrupting the process of photosynthesis.” Given that two-thirds of the Earth’s oxygen comes from phytoplankton, that would “likely result in the mass mortality of animals and humans.” … A year later, above the Arctic Circle, in Siberia, a heat wave thawed a reindeer carcass that had been trapped in the permafrost. Journey to Antarctica: What We Learned in the Ice
Rolling Stone 3-25-19

In Antarctica, we witnessed an ice shelf the size of five Manhattan’s disintegrate in a matter of hours. More than anything else, this journey has reminded me that, thanks largely to the west’s 200 year-long fossil fuel binge, we live in a rapidly changing world now. The team used measurements of the 'skin' temperature of the Earth taken by a satellite-based infrared measurement system called AIRS (Atmospheric Infra-Red Sounder) from 2003 to 2017. They compared these with station-based analyses of surface air temperature anomalies.

Paul Beckwith: "I declare a global climate change emergency to claw back up the rock face to attempt to regain system stability, or face an untenable calamity of biblical proportions."

Kevin Hester: "There is no past analogue for the rapidity of what we are baring witness to. There has been a flood of articles ... 2C is no longer attainable and that we are heading for dangerous climate change"

Guy McPherson: "The recent and near-future rises in temperature are occurring and will occur at least an order of magnitude faster than the worst of all prior Mass Extinctions. Habitat for human animals is disappearing throughout the world, and abrupt climate change has barely begun."

fundamentally not a very environmentally friendly sport, especially in places like Tampa Bay and Dallas. The league has a second problem, which is that ultimately its popularity is grounded in northern cultures where kids get to play the game outdoors -- for now.

Like downhill skiing, hockey (as a cultural institution) simply cannot be indifferent to climate change. Several years ago, the league created a multi-faceted initiative called NHL Green (annoying dynamic html site). One of its undertakings has been Rinkwatch, a citizen-science project to track the availability -- and quality -- of outdoor ice, by having folks who make backyard rinks log daily observations on weather and skatability. Yesterday the NHL website posted a PR piece that reports on the implications of ACC on outdoor skating. The piece links to a scientific paper produced by Rinkwatch that predicts the characteristics of the outdoor skating season in Canada in 2090. The journal is paywalled, but you can check out the abstract.

When people bandy about the term with no specifics, in the hopes of getting popular based on the Emperor's New Clothes Environmental Plan, and Ghoul Pelosi, who controls what gets to the floor for consideration, refers to it as the Green Dream, it's obviously just making hay for the new group of alleged progressives. (Isn't funny how many came out of the woodwork after Sanders 2016 amazed everyone with the success of grass roots fundraising?)

Sorry. I'm probably feeling way too environmentally pessimistic this morning. Pay me no mind, smiley7.

I wonder what IBM is doing in the way of climate research with all that data and computer modeling power.

up

@lotlizard
Intellicast, without bringing in the data available from local stations. Used to be able to connect to small home-based weather stations. That feature is gone now. Quite a disappointment. Guess they only want us to see their big computer modeled graphics. The local stations reporting was good info. Real time wind, temp, barometric pressure, solar radiation, humidity, barometric pressure, etc. Not there anymore. Now will have to find if there is another site with that feature.

Sky News presenter Adam Boulton has refused to apologise after comparing a climate change protestor to a “right wing fascist” and branding him “incompetent” and “self-indulgent”.

Other than Amy's show I've not seen much US coverage. Reminds me of the Occupy Movement...they start by ignoring it.

Maybe we are headed for waterworld with floating cities and farms, but I wish we would focus on saving what we can. The 200+ million dollars of fossil fueled propaganda is difficult to overcome, and that doesn't even include their lobbying (buying politicians) money.

Thanks so much for your extensive coverage, ma.

love it. great videos. certainly there will be push back. and crafting to control the narrative. against.

They beauty of this, is that the next three days are Easter vacation. heh. that means many more folks will be out. looks like the message is getting out there.

next they plan to shut down Heathrow. over the holiday. should be interesting.

here, not so much. and it will be harder to do here as they have the prison industrial system already set up. look at the Dakota pipeline protest. look at the tent cities by the border. right? but XR is starting here next. soon, not sure when. one can hope. right? that's what we have, that and getting the word out. thanks, as always for all you do. have a very good one...

The article on netting apple trees in the cascades region is interesting. It makes me wonder if more and more different crops won't soon require netting for some part of the year.

Dunno if it is climate change or increased awareness, but I've never noticed aphids as thick on garden plants as this years batch. I dumped a packet of ladybird beetles on them and the ladybugs seem to have just declared things to be hopeless and ran away.

It is allegedly headed for 80 today, so it looks like a day to get outdoors early and hide inside later.

Have a great day.

I've been hearing that here too. aphids are driving folks crazy. rain? rain and heat? makes for good breeding. (isn't there a book that lists people of good breeding?) a dr bronner soap dilution, sprayed works but you have to stay on top of it, so to speak. 80 is the new normal. underground housing sounds about right. grow stuff on top. protects from rain and wind. good insulation. what to do in drought? how to catch water in the air? thoughts?

Hey, don't have a personal Alaska anecdote, today--been totally covered up with pet insurance matters--so, thought I'd post a Tweet from one of my ol' stomping grounds--UAF (University Of Alaska, Fairbanks).

The photo in this Tweet is not far from the Institute where I was employed during my years in a civilian federal agency (as opposed to the MIC). Our researchers worked/collaborated with many of the University researchers, though our offices were in separate buildings.

Anyhoo, the weather service building was a stone's throw from us, so, always luv it when they post photos from their own front door, so to speak.

Here you go,

Hey, wanted to post about the 'news' from the Fox Town Hall--that is, related to MFA and Medicare--but, didn't have time to create a transcript. So far, Fox hasn't posted one--dagnabbit!

Bad

So, some time soon, will have to take on the tedious chore of creating my own. Drives me Wacko !!!

Thanks for your excellent work. Even though I'm not well-versed on the topic of climate change, it's funny how it's sometimes easier to grasp, when the topic touches home--which your reporting on 'the Arctic' does, for me.

and good evening. thanks for all the information you post on birds. I feed them but even now do not know them all. they have changed over the years. no blue jays this year. crows. and band-tailed pigeons. there are some yellow warblers with black spots on their heads - more this year. and sparrows with black stripes on their heads less this year. the nut hatches are fewer too. I already knew about a bird called a nuthatch, though, from when I was only six or seven.

One Christmas — probably 1953 — a friend of the family gave my older brother a children’s book by Marguerite Henry called
Brighty of the Grand Canyon, a story about this burro who apparently really did live within the named geological feature between 1892 and 1922.

I read the Brighty book several times. The words “nuthatch hammering away at a juniper tree” have stuck in my memory ever since.

Of course, in the internet era even if one is, as I am, at the age where one’s once fairly reliable memory regularly tends to fail, one can easily retrieve this entire paragraph:

A ground squirrel peered out from a chink in the wall, watching a moment with friendly eyes, then dived back where it came from. A cottontail rabbit played hop, skip, and jump around him. But nothing disturbed the little gray lump, not even a nuthatch hammering away at a juniper tree. It was the wind, an uprising current of wind from the depths of the canyon, that finally aroused him. It whirled up his nose and down his ears, tickling him awake.

Here in Dresden, Saxony, eastern Germany, central Europe, the sun’s already up. For all those who reside in time zones to the west, may you all be “tickled awake” on this Good Friday by something pleasant, something or someone, whether beast or human, imbued with the divinely-begotten mammalian love — mate’s caress, cat’s whiskers, dog’s tongue — that lives in and springs forth from Mother Nature’s ever-nurturing breast.

We call them yank yanks because that is their common call. They work up and down tree trunks typically upside down (facing the ground). We do get other nuthatches passing through but this one is our year round resident. Hope you have good birding in your corner of Germany!
