The Derby Ain't What it Used to Be
Here's something that's been on my mind for a while and I've written about it before, but I'm presenting it here to a different audience since I'm sure there are trends to be extrapolated.
I live in Louisville KY, home to the Kentucky Derby. I've always felt a connection to the race, even as a boy living in Connecticut where my Kentucky-transplanted parents held an annual Derby party, as one does. It's a pretty cool vibe here in this city for the two week festival. We don't all go to the Derby, naturally, but between the parade and boat race and marathon and art fair there's something for everyone to take part in.
When I moved here in 1990 things were different. I think the price of an Infield ticket was $40, and for Oaks it was just $25. Picnics with box lunches and spiked watermelons were everywhere. It seemed as if half the crowd was young people trying to sneak alcohol in. Women dressed in an odd mix of flowery dresses and riding boots, like a portmanteau of two very different worlds.
It wasn't rich people slumming, or common folk putting on airs. A mint julep and a $2 bet was the great equalizer.
In the time since, a lot has changed and you can read about it here.
Derby has transitioned from a local tradition where we welcome visitors with southern hospitality and charm, to one where the locals are priced out, the economic impact doesn't go farther than the hotels, and the people attending arrive in private jets.
And now it seems like no one around here cares about the Derby anymore. It feels a lot like being a Bernie Sanders supporter in 2016. They just want to use us to turn out and provide the energy for their festival.

I have a very personal connection to The Derby.
It was shown on TV. Free. As were all Triple Crown races.
And then Secretariat. Record holder in all 3 races to this day. My Final Portrait print picture, my Tercotte autographed gift of himself awaiting the lineup at the Belmont, buying and training a Secretariat lineage stallion, going to the farm/barns/ memorial whatever you call it, to see the stride length of Man o' War, Secretariat...in Louisville.
It was fun, it honored the athletes (horses).
It is now for rich folks to bet with no worry about losing.
My only interest nowadays is if any horse breaks Secretariat's record, or if drugs are involved.
Derby Day should be for all of us to experience.

Haven't been to the races in decades
Used to go to Hollywood Park and Santa Anida and follow the Triple Crown.
Back in the days of Secretariat. Kinda dating myself, huh?
When I moved to Oregon I frequented the Greyhound Races in Wood Village/Troutdale.
Lost interest in gambling ultimately.
Now the proles just do lotto and scratch-offs.
Went to Talladega once. Tickets for the infield were modest and it was a crazy 3 day & night party. I've heard it has skyrocketed in price now.
Everything is going up up up.

Cuba is a dead horse, stop beating it.
NASCAR will be in San Diego
for a race in June. I thought about going until I look up ticket prices. General admission is $250 for the NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday. The NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series on Saturday is a little more affordable. Only $98 for general admission. That may be doable.

Secretariat was an ABFAB horse, beautiful
as well as the fastest critter on 4 legs. I relate more to Seabiscuit. I only bother with the Derby cos I'm a horse fan. I could care less about the bipeds. To me, horses are among nature's prettiest creatures. Smart, too.
I learned to ride bareback and western saddle many, MANY lightyear moons ago. LOL. Never had one as a pet. Horse racing has more than enuff of its share of humanoid corruption and cruelty. The female Derby Day fashion show can be a hoot though.
