Morning.
Exploring local issues today.
If you have the time the full article below is worth a read and the New Yorker writer has the quirky humor often found in the publication. Oregon is a trend setter, historically slipping into economic downturns before other parts of the country. Might see some additional trends which are showing up in your local area or maybe just the opposite.
Not in the article but mentioned on C99 is the rise in grocery prices. Personally been experiencing a continual lowering of prices at the grocery store the past year. Maybe it is the expansion of on-line shopping options creating more uniform pricing nationwide. The local area has been resort town pricing for as long as I remember.
Model City: Portland’s Journey From Symbol of Chic to Shabby RealClearInvestigations, Mark Hemingway Feb 05, 2026
In December, bestselling author and humorist David Sedaris wrote a New Yorker magazine essay about a recent trip to Portland, Oregon. While on a walk to a donut shop, he “lost count of the strung-out addicts I passed on my way” before eventually encountering four homeless people huddled around an empty baby carriage and smoking drugs right on the sidewalk. Moments later, a dog belonging to one of the addicts rushed out and bit him.
Following the incident, Sedaris, a former methamphetamine addict himself, was struck by the fact that most people in Portland didn’t seem concerned about the state of the city – even the medical worker who treated him appeared more concerned with the dog’s well-being than what had happened to him:
I mean, how hard should it be to get a little sympathy when an unleashed dog bites you? What if I were a baby? I wondered. Would people side with me then? What if I were ninety or blind or Nelson Mandela? Why is everyone so afraid of saying that drug addicts shouldn’t let their dogs bite people? Actually, I know why. We’re afraid we’ll be mistaken for Republicans, when, really, isn’t this something we should all be able to agree on? How did allowing dogs to bite people become a Democratic point of principle? Or is it just certain people’s dogs? If a German shepherd jumped, growling, out of one of those Tesla trucks that look like an origami project and its owner, wearing a MAGA hat, yelled, “Trumper, no!!!,” then would the people in my audience be aghast?
That one of America’s most progressive cities has become a laughingstock in one of the country’s more progressive magazines is a sign of Portland’s ongoing troubles. Like other big cities with major challenges, such as Chicago and San Francisco, Portland boasts many lovely areas and vibrant neighborhoods. But it is also defined by a range of pervasive problems – including crime, homelessness, drug addiction – that are less the consequences of modern society than self-inflicted wounds created by ineffective policies. If Portland stands out from other beleaguered cities, it is because its decline has been so swift.
...
But in a figurative sense – and at least one literal sense – Trump is right. Portland is constantly on fire. In the year following July 2024, Portland had 6,268 fire-related incidents – and 40% of the fires in the city are a direct result of Portland’s out-of-control vagrancy.
Economic Doom Loop
...
Echoing Sedaris, Eager says one key reason why the city’s massive crime problem goes unaddressed is that it’s largely self-inflicted and driven by ideology. “Hard core progressivism has destroyed what old school Oregon liberals built – farmers markets, parks, walkable communities, transit, and all the good kind of Portlandia-era liberal lifestyle stuff,” said Eager. “This brand of progressivism is just so against the rule of law, it’s ruined all those institutions that made Portland a cool, trendy, quirky place. It's not really quirky anymore. It's dangerous.”Portland now has the second-highest crime rate of any city in America, behind Memphis. About one out of every 16 people in the city is the victim of a crime every year.
...
The city is also enduring a full-blown economic crisis. Businesses have been fleeing the city. As of last year, Portland had the highest commercial real estate vacancy rate of any major city in the country, and it remains at record levels. Anything above a 20% office vacancy rate is said to indicate “severe distress,” and Portland’s office vacancy rate is 34.6%. Powell’s Books, America’s largest independent bookstore and arguably the city’s most iconic retail operation, had four rounds of layoffs last year. The city’s biggest office tower, the 42-story U.S. Bancorp building, was sold in 2015 for $372.5 million; last year it sold for $45 million. Residential real estate isn’t faring much better. In 2024, the Ritz-Carlton began selling luxury condos in a building downtown. Only 11 of the 132 condos have sold since then, and it recently announced its price was being slashed by 50%.
“When you enter one of these economic Doom loops, we could be 10 years trying to dig ourselves out of it,” says Diehl. “The problem is, we need a healthy, vibrant Portland.”

Hey, Good morning
Got a chuckle from these two items --

Doubt we are quite qualified to 'run the world'.
Thanks for the OT.
Zionism is a social disease
Of the opinion part of the problem is
rivalry between departments and agencies. Think Army Navy annual football game expressed in small daily activities scoring points in an non-public competition. I can imagine Border Patrol saying to each other "No military stiff is going to tell us what weapon can be used. We are on the front line of protecting 'merica and they are just worried about their precious toys."
The clicks run deep from inherited leadership positions staying within family groups to units with shared experiences moving up leadership ladder. Sometimes the clicks bring rot instead of quest for competence. The rot can keep spreading into other parts of our civilian society and recircle (Epstein threads) back into military and security services.
Then there is the growing problem of fatigue of active personnel and equipment.
Some of my reasoning for avoiding a hot war is real potential of losing again.

I just barnstormed my BBC-list with that story you linked there!
Don't just be content to sneak that in a comment, let's have a diary-post for that!!!
In the Land of the Blind, the One-Eyed Man is declared mentally ill for describing colors.
Yes Virginia, there is a Global Banking Conspiracy!
Good mornng soe, thanks for the OT. We seem to have made it
safely past Darwin Day (yesterday), so here's hoping for similar luck today, Friday 13, 2026. Possible good news is that tomorrow is Valentine's Day.
Today is my infusion day, which sort of wrecks my entire afternoon, but I still have critical valentine's day errands to run. Traditionally I get my wife a single red rose and a Baby Ruth candy bar. Those of sufficient antiquity will get it, others not so much. In recent years it has become difficult to find said candy bar, but I struck pay-dirt a few days ago in a Hardware store of all places. The trick now will be to find said single rose on my way home rom the hospital infusion center, not as easy as it used to be.
Best laid plans of mice and men department - sometime last fall/early winter we planned out a little R&R starting tomorrow through the 19th. A review of a generally reliable weather reporting & prediction site, wunderground.com, informs me that after tomorrow it will be raining very place we go except here at home when we return on the 19th, only to then rain here on the 20th. I suspect this will call for extra libations "to stay warm".
Meanwhile local news is all about crazy, of course, including one somewhat hilarious bit. News sources keep talking about how large numbers of people are fleeing the state. Meanwhile there is an in-place statewide project to build a ton of new housing, including using eminent domain to get some of the building sites for same, by county, and town or other locale, plus feverish campaign promises from governator wannabees to really bust out the new housing. Banks here are already sitting on a lot of property, and I forsee far, far more in the offing. Oh well, beats having the ton ton macoutes running amok downtown I guess, lack of some types of things being just as good news as presence of other things.
Dinner out tonight because infusion day, so I don't have to cook tonight. All of our individual sourdough starters are freshly refreshed and go into the fridge to hibernate until we return, whereupon we will need to find uses for tons of "discard" as e then work to revive them.
be well and have a good one

Good luck on your quest. Suppose one could buy a bouquet and give away the extra flowers to another shopper.

Incorrect post converted into video might be of interest
This video was posted earlier this week in another OT. If did not get a chance to watch might find it interesting to have all this information on the continent in visual pictures. The additional reasons for ice shelf melting was new to me.
Ironically the time frame of Eisenhower's Military-Industry Complex Warning on Jan 17, 1961 and current legal status of Antartica are fairly close. Maybe we are seeing prepositioning of Great Powers geographically, alliances between signatures of treaty and United Nation organizational structure prior to when changes to treaty terms can occur.

Good afternoon, soe!
This 19 minute video is produced by a man who seems to think most democrats are communists, but at the end of the day, he searches for truth and clearly feels no allegiance to MAGA for sure, or any party, it seems.
It was fun watching his complete excoriation of Pam Bondi. Well done, well deserved. I think someone should start the complaint process to get her disbarred. If I lied under oath, I would have my license suspended immediately.
Enjoy your day and thanks for the OT, friend!

He can be pretty funny
will watch in a few minutes. If I watch now something will come up needing immediate attention, then it will be midnight, promise myself I will reply tomorrow and then notice the week has passed. Ah the simple life of the semi-retired.
Been watching the MAGA fracture grow into a full blown split after the assassination of Charlie Kirk with Candace Owens this week declaring the complete movement dead on one of her podcasts. The other fractional movement is demanding loyalty oaths to a specific religious theology and foreign country as a sign of MAGA loyalty.
The technology developed to control us is effectively being used to destroy official narratives by citizen activity. This week's bombshell has been looping back the wife as a potential Epstein collaborator and possibly part of a military click. Owens has an entertaining style and enjoy Baron Coleman opening statements, then use the outline to jump to sections of interest.
This aspect of independent media is as interesting of the retired intelligence specialists and foreign journalists who began collaborating to recreate their historical influence on foreign policy. The critical aspect to the influence has been general population participation including improved understanding of the subject. I am watching them now to evaluate how well I have gathered information on a subject and guessed their public opinion.
need to go something came up requiring attention and it could take a while.
