The faces of war.
I read a few days ago that the official death toll in Gaza had passed 70,000. I have no idea how accurate that is but I think it’s safe to say that number is low, and probably very low.
No one knows how many bodies still lie buried under the millions of tons of concrete that once were people’s homes, their libraries, their schools, hospitals, grocery stores, their communities. And I wonder if that official count even includes the children that to this day are dying from malnutrition in the refugee camps. Or those that succumb to sickness and disease brought on by the horrible conditions in those same camps?
I also read that 80% of those counted were civilians. My brain doesn’t work as well as it once did but by my count that would mean that around 56,000 Palestinian civilians were killed. That’s getting pretty close to the number of Americans soldiers we lost in Vietnam. Americans got kind of upset about that, and I was one of them., but I’m not seeing that same kind of outrage over what we’re doing in Gaza, not in the numbers we had in the anti war protests back then. The difference being of course the 56,000 Palestinian deaths I speak of weren’t American soldiers. They were unarmed non-combatants, mothers and fathers, children and babies, grandma’s and grandpa’s.
It sickens me that my country is supplying the weapons and money to carry out this monstrous war.
With Vietnam we the people stood up, we the people marched in the streets, we raged against the machine if you will and it took a long time but eventually we the people got that stinking war shut down. I hope we can find that kind of energy now but I fear that a lot of people are just worn down to the point of hopelessness. I have to fight off those feelings myself and it’s getting harder every day. I doubt I’m the only one.
Anyway, I don’t see much real coverage of Gaza on the tv so I grabbed a few pics off the internet that you’ll most likely never see on the six o’clock news. I hesitated posting these because they’re so painful to look at. I just felt like I needed to. I know they're very hard to look at but if you're strong enough please slow down your scrolling a bit and take the time to look into the faces of these people. But be warned, it may break your heart.

I'd love to see these pics on every bill board in America.

Kind of late in the day
but I'll go ahead and publish now, might be other night owls out there.

I wrestle with myself
over how much energy I can expend on indignation. As far as abstract "opinion" goes, I agree with you and Caitlin Johnstone about how horrible this abomination is. And I would join a march or a rally if somebody organized it in my community. I've done it before in my union work, and I wish I had the combination of gumption and active connections to organize events here in Los Angeles.
But I am retired. Philosophically, I am outraged. Physically, I am an observer.
I suspect that there are quite a few baby boomers like me who have one excuse or another for sitting in front of a flat screen, deploring this situation quietly.
This is not to disagree with this thread.
