OT WE 19 NOV 25 ~ Black-out

that profits off our pain, exploits our labor, and buys our politicians.
The upcoming commercial frenzy associated with the holidays is in full swing. Sometimes
referred to as "black Friday", it is supposed to be a boost to retailers that have seen flagging
sales. Shaking out the consumers. Don't buy it. Keep it in the red.
This is a neighboring organization organizing a boycott. They are advocating to only shop
local small businesses and avoid the online / chain conglomerates. Maybe put a dent in the
gears of the machine? I know of several local artisans and craftsmen presenting goods at
various venues in this spirit during the next couple of weeks. See how it works.
The national group is called 'Mass Blackout' which is a collective of various organizations
around the country. May be worth a look.
Open thread so fire away with whatever ammo you have.

Hiya, good morning
.
.
On this day in history:
1620 -- The Mayflower reaches Cape Cod and explores the coast
(hell on the natives)
1863 -- US President Abraham Lincoln delivers his Gettysburg Address,
starts with "Four score and seven years ago..."
1917 -- Indira Gandhi was born somewhere in India
2017 -- Charles Manson died after working for the devil about 83 years
What's up?

Good morning...
The boycott sounds like a good idea, but I bet many consumers will shop to try to save a buck with the hyped sales. We are easily led by a few dollars waved in our face.
I liked otc's comment the other day to the effect of we can still seek inner peace, world peace is far far away.
The bill to release the Epstein files is only for unclassified documents. I bet they classify all the meaningful ones and it ends up being a nothing burger about like the JFK files. The political theater distracts us for another round.
I've got one more round of mowing all the wildflowers I let go through the fall...now freeze bitten. Cleaned up leaves yesterday in the yard around the house where I plant ryegrass for a patch of winter green. Still more leaves to fall, but the the fallen leaves were smothering my grass, and I set it free. If we get the Friday rain they are calling for it would help.
Well hope everyone has a good day, and thanks for the OT!

It is an attempt to counter the
.
hype associated with 'holiday sales'
a savvy consumer will realize the prices
of good will actually drop nearer said holidays
due to retail desperation before the end of the year.
After all, it is just a date on the calendar. Always found
the best deals were in January anyway.
Tried rye grass seeding a few years ago, but didn't take
for whatever reasons. Could be my lack of a green thumb?

I’m in.
I will be buying nothing on Black Friday, with malice aforethought.
Truth be told, we are boycotting the holidays altogether, other than a very small, slightly festive private Thanksgiving for just the two of us. We will be celebrating our mutual survival to date. There’s not much else to celebrate right now.
Be safe out there.

A worthy reason to celebrate

Survival is good. Same here.
Small gathering here for turkey day.
No TV, so no football distraction.
Easy jazz music playing softly from the box.
Just food and friends.
Manageable.

Well, if I might suggest
one slightly more uptempo Christmas song for the playlist (to mix in among the mellow jazz), it'd be this one... (;-)

It seems that yesterday's
latest Cloudflare outage/outrage has passed- I couldn't even get in here to post for some of the day, and I knew that it wasn't this site's problem. I did see that other folks had issues here. When that occurs, check https://downdetector.com: this one was bad enough that it even took them down. More info here:

About that: I had a major design review for a new product scheduled for bright and early yesterday morning, and my beloved employer has dictated that all of our critical design data be moved into the cloud.
Well, thanks to Cloudflare, the cloud wasn't giving it back just then. What fun! But it did allow me to very decisively make the point to all of the upper management hoohaws gathered in the room that that decision might have been a little, shall we say, flawed.
I'm at the point in my career that I simply no longer care if they fire me. I'm calling it my "Get off my lawn!" phase, and I've decided to enjoy it, for as long as it lasts. Meanwhile, I'm cashing the paychecks with a tight little smile each time. Replace *this* with AI!

get the AI craze. Getting harder to avoid as search

Actual brain function still counts for something,

Good morning QMS, et. al. One of my
"news" accumulators included the following hilarious headline, but tha's all I got because I chose not to follow the link.
We will have a small family gathering at which we will serve grilled pork tenderloin, roasted potatoes and yams and blue lake bush beans from our garden plus a costco pumpkin pie, preceded by a cheese plate (manchego, emmenthaler and cheddar with sourdough baguette rounds) and selected wines to be determined later. We will chromecast some classic Paris cafe music (Django era and style) from one of the 'puters to the tube in the living room and play some sort of card, board or dice games.

intending to do a pre-turkey day post next week
involving an Onondaga prayer. Tried it out last night
with the writers group. Quite moving. Everyone got to read
a stanza, and we all chimed in for the refrain.
Getting some local cheese 'Bronzed Beauty' for the
occasion
"Our latest experiment! Washed with the deeply aromatic Porter beer from Mayflower Brewing Company in Plymouth, MA as it ages, this semi-soft, beer-bronzed cheese will please all your senses. The golden brown rind is fully edible, and the interior will melt in your mouth. Mild, creamy, grassy, beyond buttery."
They do a nice job with their little business. Making some yeasty bread to go with it.

Hola QMS. You a Leo Kottke fan?
I have 3 of his vinyl LPs including the iconic Mudlark.
I have almost nothing but contempt for so-called "Artificial Intelligence." Only thing genuine about it is it sure is phony, and not intelligent. I would like to know how a human falls in love with this crap? I assume the reports are accurate. As far as Black Friday goes, I stay as far away from it as possible. Worked for too many years in small item retail. I'm not much of a materialist to begin with. Anywho, hope all is going well in your neck of the woods. Rec'd!!.
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Ya sure
.
Leo does some wondrous slide work.
Like you, I am not a materialistic kinda soul.
But the other half still pretends Santa is real.
So will play the silly game yet another year.
Get some bauble and a card for the 59th
birthday on 7 DEC. Locally sourced of course.
Cheers!

Good morning, Cap'n!
I observe traditional holidays in accordance with my tradition, which is to do nothing traditional.
The Thanksgiving feast will be whatever we are in the mood to eat, and Thursdays scream for tacos.
I do not shop on a schedule, other than groceries. It has been 30 years since I shopped on Black Friday. Winter clothing and certain home decor and the like, such as warm blankets, go on sale in January at huge discount prices.
I am basically conditioned to holidays being a day when I do not have to go to work, but can work from home.
Maybe my approach will be different when I retire.
Well, try out some new recipe, Cap'n!
