Open Thread - Thurs 19 June 2025 - Happy Juneteenth!

Happy Juneteenth!

Slavery ended in this country, officially, on June 19th, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. So now we celebrate the day as Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday in 2021. Yay! And now...

I gotta admit, I loved seeing the No Kings! protest marches in the cities and towns in the US on Saturday. There was even one in my little town! Seattle's march was huge, I was so proud. Yes, these were all just marches, but at least it says something about what a lot of the people of the USA think about Trump's possible dictatorship.

No Kings Marches Were Everywhere! Image from Newsbreak.com

Do the TPTB really, REALLY, think a nuclear war won't affect them, never mind all the other people of the world? Really? I know Trump doesn't, because he probably wants to take everyone out with him when he dies, since he's 'so' important, and that death is coming up 'soon' because he's getting old. After all he's still human, right? Did we really have to have two presidents in a row with dementia? I never thought I'd be happy with Joe Biden, but compared to Trump? Yeesh.

But, is it really Trump in control of all of this? Is he just the very ugly face of it all? I wonder if Vance is telling Trump it'll be ok, because he'll go to heaven? What do his younger 'advisors' think about getting radiation poisoning? About their families, their friends, their pets, the trees, grass, animals in their yards? Do they really think the radiation will just 'go away' in a few weeks? Or that it will be limited to only one area? Many of them are in D.C. Do they think that city won't be targeted immediately? Over and over again? I know, radiation bunkers will save them! Have fun trying to live in those, goofballs!

I agree with Caitlin here: If this war with Iran has to happen because of our 'leader's' stupidity, let it be the war nobody comes to. I have a lot of friends who were, or are, in the military. I am going to be saying this to them, over and over. Ironically, my husband spent years in the army, going from Private to Sergeant. And he agrees with me; say it over and over again.

Ok, here's the open thread! What's up, whatcha doing? Reading? Thinking? Remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

And Happy Thursday. What a week it's been! What a week! And I'm not even talking about the political stuff, although that sure adds to it.

I want to apologize for not being here during the previous week. Family things got very intense, but I managed to resolve it all. Nothing really bad happened, thank goodness. Hope everything is good for all of you, and soon to be summer is nice!

What's up? How you doing?

.
Another foggy start today which I don't mind.
Rode the e-bike into town yesterday to do some
errands. That was a good challenge. Had been a while
since attempting it. Mounting / dismounting is the most
difficult part. Came close a few times, but didn't fall.
Lowered the seat to make it easier.
Enjoy your emancipation day and thanks for the OT!

I've thought about getting one. Thing is, I am so used to riding recumbent bikes (my father and I started riding those a LONG time ago) that I don't know if I can stand a regular bike arrangement. Wonder if e-bikes come in recumbent style? When my father got really, really old he put a little motor on his recumbent, so he could still ride up mountains. Maybe I try to do that? Hmmm.

Here's a recumbent bike, with someone MUCH skinnier than I am riding it Smile From this article on the benefits of recumbents.

More power to you, for riding and going into town and navigating the seat height and all that. Rockin!

would work a treat. Get one that will simply replace your front wheel with a hub-drive motor, such as this example (there are many others, this is for illustration only). This is for a 16" front wheel: https://www.amazon.com/Sootvp-Electric-Bicycle-Conversion-Brushless/dp/B...

A search on E-bike conversion kits, with your actual wheel size, will bring you a world of options. Look on eBay as well.

Full disclosure: as we speak, I'm looking to do this retrofit on my venerable old Specialized Stumpjumper mountain bike...

Well, Trump is flexing some strong kingly muscle, and seems to be getting stronger. While the protests got some media attention, few in Congress have any problems with it. It all appears to have been planned long ago. Lots of claims Iran committed a war crime by bombing a hospital. Irony, anyone? problem is, the bomb intentionally hit a military command center in the vicinity, not the hospital.

So sorry to hear you had a family crisis, but it is great to hear it was positively resolved.
The trial yesterday went exceedingly well for my client. He was awarded every asset he requested. We lucked out and the case was heard by "the good judge".
Thanks for the OT, chica!

I saw it and just started shaking my head. Really? Then Israel is just as evil for striking hospitals over and over again. Dang!

It's not that I like Iran, it's that they need to be left alone. Sheez.

I'm very glad to hear the trail went so well! Excellent that you got the good judge to hear the case. Have a great weekend! It might rain here, maybe. We haven't had rain yet this month in my area, so rain would be good (in moderation, of course).

from the Zionist entity are most amusing to watch, after they systematically, and with malice aforethought, destroyed essentially every hospital in Gaza.

Too bad that most of America has no idea that that has happened, since the MSM has systematically, and with malice aforethought, refused to cover those minor little boom-boom actions.

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, Zionists. Deal with it.

APRA HARBOR, Guam –

U.S. 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) arrived in Guam for a routine port visit, June 14. This is Blue Ridge’s first visit to the island since 2020.

Guam plays a vital role in enabling the U.S. Navy’s ability to operate forward—supporting logistics, command and control, and fleet readiness—while strengthening our posture to deter adversaries and respond rapidly across the Indo-Pacific.

"Guam is a strategic hub for the U.S. Navy and serves an important role in ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific," said Capt. Nicholas DeLeo, commanding officer of Blue Ridge. "It is an honor to visit this beautiful island, where our Sailors are always treated with such hospitality. I'd like to thank the people of Guam for welcoming our Blue Ridge and 7th Fleet teams."

7th Fleet staff, embarked aboard USS Blue Ridge, commands the world’s largest forward-deployed fleet with the primary mission of providing operational control and planning for its forces in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, while promoting regional stability and maritime security through engagements with allies and partners.

무슨 사랑 What Love? (It's all lies) Yoo Jina

It's all lies, it's all lies
The words you whispered to my tender heart are all lies
You're going to leave a painful wound in my heart
You're going to run away alone
What kind of love is this? A foolish play with fire
You said you loved me, did you say we'd be forever, you bad liar

It's all lies, it's all lies
The vows we made back then, when we linked fingers, were all lies
You're going to leave a deep bruise in my heart
You're going to run away alone
What kind of love is this? A ridiculous puppy love
We'll never meet again, so this is a permanent separation, you bad liar

Thanks for the OT Sima!

Dang, I hate this routine. As I get older, I realize, no-one in power seems to learn lessons, do they? Bleh.

Thanks for stopping by and posting this. I learn something from you all the time, and often get to listen to some great music. Thank you! Have a great weekend!

...it was Juneteenth when I woke up till you posted, Sima. Some of my plans for the day were foiled. Thanks for the kind words. I always liked that song. I love the way she sings "gaw jit mal i ya!" that's a lie! It might not stay up long, because KBS loves its copyright. Another performance by Yoo Jina that I posted got over 2000 hits on brand X web site I no longer patronize before they pulled it down. This one below by Jina of that same song on MBN:

It's her dramatic contemporary rendition of a Buddhist theme:

돌고 돌아가는 길-노사연 The Path Ever Turns 유지나

The Path Ever Turns 돌고 돌아가는 길-노사연 No Sa Yeon 1978 performed by Yoo Ji Na.

Climbing one mountain after another, turning and turning
Going up to that grave, where is it?
My feet turn and turn
I cross one river after another, flowing, flowing
Wet, immersed in that water, where does it lead?
Inside me, it flows and flows.

My feet only turn and turn
Beneath them many circles
My form passes by, inside me the wheel turns,
The cycle ever as it turns
If I don't follow, where will I go?
The water is good, so the grave
Whatever I do, I must go.

Crossing one mountain after another,
On that turning, turning path
Even better with a smile
Why not a small turn as time passes?
One blossoms only for a brief time
Even though I circle, I must follow my dream.

Originally performed by the great South Korean folk singer No Sa-yeon.

from b. I am at comment 83. Fascinating stuff about the ME conflict. I mean, the new conflict. Nobody is giving Gaza much media space, like the genocide is old news.

@QMS so do I. Interestingly, I just received an email from an attorney in a big, fancy firm near Dallas. We settled a lawsuit. I guess the firm doesn't give a shit about Juneteenth.
The black community in Texas has celebrated the day long before the rest of the country.
My big celebration is a trip to Lowe's to buy a weed eater. Pretty creative, huh?

Guess we all find creative ways to celebrate whatever comes along.
Peace, prosperity, persistence. String trimmers work well along those
lines in my mind. Easier to cut up some poke salad.

Hah, made me laugh. It's such a new holiday, that I didn't even know either, until I was doing a bit of research for this blogpost and realized it was 19th June and what's all this about Juneteenth.

I was going to go to the post office this afternoon (My address is a PO Box). I dunno, I might still go to get the bills. Heh.

I want Juneteeth to be a real holiday, in that it gets celebrated on the Monday closest to the 19th of June and we all get a three day weekend.

As for shooting at you as you mow... they better not, even if it is a holiday! Holidays can be for mowing! Smile
