Open Thread - Thurs 20 Jun 2024 - We Knew This Was Coming

We Knew This Was Coming:

A few days ago Matt Taibbi published an article entitled 'We Called It: Karine Jean-Pierre Blames AI "Deepfakes" for Joe Biden's Real Infirmity'. He's right, 'we', meaning those of us who are actually paying attention, called it. The powers that be will use any excuse to try to make us less aware of how dementia ridden and senile Biden (and Trump) is/are getting.

Recently I got an email from Public Citizen asking me to sign a petition to the FEC telling them to ban deepfakes in elections. I agree with the petition, but I also gotta say that Biden's problems aren't always, or even mostly, deepfakes. And I think the petition relates to the push to make Biden's ('supposed') dementia the fault of people making AI deepfakes. Am I cynical, or what?

From the last election but it still fits! (source The Week)

It's interesting how the Democrats (not gonna call them the left, because they aren't) are attacking Trump for being senile (example 1: Newsweek - overwhelming evidence of Trump's dementia, example 2: RawStory - 'he was talking gibberish', example 3 Salon - signs of mental decline). Biden's senility is a big concern for Republicans, so the attacks come from the other side as well. And the 'attacks' are discussing real things that happened. In Sunday's Weekly Watch Lookout posted a video of Biden wandering off from the G7 summit leaders, and another of him perhaps pooping his pants at a D-Day celebration. These aren't deepfakes.

In my opinion one of the main problems for both Biden and Trump is that they are too old. Too old. And I say that, being on the way to being that old myself. And they are both experiencing cognitive decline.

I very rarely watch anything about Biden or Trump, but when I do see videos of them, I recognize my father's conditions as he went through the stages of dementia. No, neither of them is as far along as my father, who just turned 89, but, dang, they are well on their way. And no, not every old person gets this, thank the gods. Many old people do well mentally and physically, as my father did for years.

Biden should step aside and let someone younger run against Trump. And Trump should do the same against Biden. Is it going to happen? I don't think so. I have to admit, as well, that I don't care that much. Both parties and candidates basically suck.

And so it begins...
Or is that, continues? The poorer areas of the earth are suffering both drought and flooding to such a degree that they cannot produce food anymore. More people will starve. I'm not surprised, but I am saddened.

Thanks for reading and here's the open thread, along with a puppy tail wag and nuzzle - remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

I hope it is not too hot, too wet, or too cold where you are. Here, it is getting hotter, but not awful. Has anyone else noticed a dearth of lady bugs? We are having one here, and the aphids are going nuts. I suppose it might be climate change, or maybe just because of a cold spring or something.

Anyway, have a great day and a great prep for the weekend! Post whatever is on your mind, happening with you, and more!

deepfake means we are not to believe our eyes.
To spare us from seeing truth, everything negative will be deepfake and banned.
Sounds like a CIA plan to me! Thanks goodness they can take such great care of us. Sweet!
On another subject, seems the bill proposing an auto registry for men 18-26, in the event we re-institute a military draft, defines men as being assigned as male at birth.
You can't do that, and I can't do that, but the military sure can. We must all be caring and sensitive and correct, but the military can get right down to the genitals, screw polite society.
On yet another subject, please give Nikko a big hug for me, please?
Love the OT today!

@on the cusp
Because my first name is almost always interpreted to be 'Rick' with a weird spelling, everyone assumes I'm a man until they actually meet me. Years ago, when I was in college, I got a visit from the guy assigned to 'recruit' men (sign them up) for the draft. I opened the door, there stood the soldier. His eyes opened very wide when he realized I was the 'man' he was looking for. He stuttered, apologized, we chatted for a bit and then, I told him to sign me up. He was surprised, and said he can't sign up women. I asked 'why not?' I can fight too.

This aspect has always pissed me off. If women are in the military, fighting, then draft them too! Make everyone suffer, in every way possible! Then maybe we'll stop this stupid military crap!

both Biden and Trump have a major dementia episode during their debate. That way there would be no denying both of these clowns are way past their expiration date and are no longer fit enough to run around the block let alone run the country. I know, it's a pipe dream, but one can hope.

I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.

@Socialprogressive Lambert Strether posts about his subjective assessment of both candidates and dementia. He concludes that Trump shows no decline in mental acuity from 2016 to 2024. I try hard to not listen to either Trump or Biden, so I have no personal opinion, other than that Biden is seriously impaired.

@Socialprogressive I think I have you beat in the cynical department. I do hope that RFKJr could get in there and make some real changes. However, the cynic says wouldn’t that be just our government’s style to use a supposed “reformer” to give us hope and then use him to do more damage? Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice…….

All you need in america is millions to campaign and millions more to litigate. Simple!

Seeking ballot access as an independent candidate is cumbersome, costing a large sum of money to attain by signature collectors in many states as well as lawyers to adhere to a complex patchwork of election laws that vary state by state.

a few, now and then, here and there. I've already stumbled across two, so I can't say that things are unusual here in that regard. No mucho aphids yet, either, though they, in part, seem to depend on what we have planted, which, right now, isn't much. Leaf miners, we have in spades, on/in the chard. Any folutions to them would be greatly appreciated.

There is something about our political system. Remember that Bill Clinton was the first Boomer president, preceeded by a bunch of aged out folks like rancid ronnie. Now it's time for the next cohort to step up, but the system favors the elderly. There's at least a master's thesis in that somewhere for anybody who wants to dig into it.

I don't understand my ladybug situation. Many years I have found them nesting in the tiny space between my door and doorframe. I sometimes see them flitting around my bedroom, yet even more rarely outside. I don't know how to remedy their transition except to carefully try to catch them and release them outside. I wonder where they disappear to? I think I have to read about their habits.

@janis b
they allegedly eat aphids. I'm sort of sure that it as a non-winged larval form that does the eating, not the winged adults. I do know that all insects are temperature sensitive. I once saw a red rock in the Sierras (or foothills?) that turned out to be totally covered with ladybugs, presumably sunning themselves.

As for Leaf Miners, I would try some insecticidal soap mixture. This webpage has a lot of good ideas https://gardenbeast.com/leaf-miner/ which should work. I've used the neem oil in the soil, as well as in a soap mixture spray. Hope it works for you!

@snoopydawg Doctorow's opinion on Russian affairs always has to be taken into account. As far as the agreement goes, I think parts of it are craftily worded. It is a military agreement as far as it goes. Would DPRK troops become in effect mercenaries for Russia in Ukraine? I've heard discussions of North Koreans being used as labor forces maybe to rebuild Ukraine, or provide labor in Russia as they now do.

However, Doctorow's comment that North Korea doesn't need ICBMs or improved missile technology (reentry vehicles, decoys etc), because they have Russian backing at this point from the agreement is somewhat misleading. First of all, if push comes to shove, Russia could provide North Korea with all kinds of support and resources, technology, fuel, food, military equipment, spare parts, etc. But if North Korea attacked Seoul or Gyeonggido, with 10 million and 13.4 million people respectively within range, not including Chungcheong or territory further south in range of super large guided artillery rockets, or ballistic missiles, a conflict arising to this level, will trigger a response from the US that in turn may draw a nuclear response probably from the NK side first.

I really don't think, Russia wants any part of the above. I doubt China does either. Russia could play the same game the US is playing with Ukraine, and stand aside (like Stalin did during the Korean conflict). The Russians could conceivably watch North Korea basically destroy elements of the US military infrastructure in Japan and South Korea all by itself and in turn be destroyed. What is the US going to do if Russia and China haven't directly participated in the conflict? This is why the official US representation in South Korea has become somewhat reasonable lately, advising the far right Yoon administration to act with restraint, maybe not act at all in the military sense. One really doesn't know what the Russians would do. That's the advantage the Russian North Korean military agreement provides.

The US isn't alone in Northeast Asia, the Japanese MSDF (navy) is a substantial component of military forces in the region and the ruling LDP administration shares US geostrategic objectives against China, Russia, and North Korea. South Korean land and air forces are significant but their footprint is limited making them vulnerable. Many if not most South Koreans are not interested in expanding their security problems from the North Korean threat, to a more general anti-China, anti-Russian orientation. The Japanese military component of the alliance with the US will grow in the next few years. The LDP leadership in Japan is very much in tune with the US Indo-Pacific objectives. It is the South Korean component of the tri lateral partnership that is quite rickety and may not survive the Yoon administration.

feeding-trough frenzy for the consulting/grifter class is now well under way. What an unutterable waste: no one with their mind made up is going to change it, no matter what the grifters put out on social media or the teevee. And I suspect that very few of the undecideds and apathetic will bother to vote at all.

Why would they? There's nothing to vote *for*. Orange-man-bad is not much of a motivator, when it is clear that undead-corpse-meat-puppet-bad is equally true. And more and more people are coming to understand that every day.

in my opinion. Billions of dollars exchange hands and does anyone keep track of it or knows where it goes? There is only a limit for how much one person can donate to a candidate unless you donate to a super pac where you can donate many millions to numerous super pacs. Just what does that buy them? It’s legalized bribery so that the parasite class can buy themselves our government. And our government whores are happy to sell themselves out. Biden spilled the beans right after he arrived in congress.

Aphids bad.
Seems quite possible the aphid infestation is drawing a bumper crop of ladybugs, which eat them. Try not to spray the aphids, let the ladybugs feast first.
If you do spray, try to use organic bug sprays.
I have had to buy little bags of ladybugs to "inoculate" my gardens.
Good weather down here in Vancouver too, 91 today.
In the latest video of Bydone wandering away, I did see him give a thumbs up to somebody off camera. So I suspect a malevolent edit.

when we've had lots of aphids on the plants, especially roses in the early season, the ladybugs and other bugs have showed up and taken care of things. Hopefully, they will do so soon on the peppers. We never spray anything super bad, mostly soap and oil mixtures. Thing is, we just haven't seen that many ladybugs this year. It's strange, but then, isn't everything right now?
