03/18 Open Thread Anniversary of the Oil Expropriation (Mexico)
The picture above shows the yacht Reliance successfully defending "the" America's Cup against Sir Thomas Lipton's yacht Shamrock III. Reliance was designed by Nathaniel (Nat) Herreshoff. a genius yacht designer who was noteworthy for designing a wide variety of boats. He was born on March 18, 1848. He designed five yachts which successfully defended "the" America's Cup, one winning twice. These yachts were owned by very wealthy individuals, like, for example, Sir Thomas Lipton, who, by coincidence lost 5 straight America's Cup races. He was, among other things, a baronet and the founder of Lipton Tea Company. So, what has this got to do with Mexico's Oil Expropriation?
Well, Sir Lipton was not an oil baron, though one could perhaps call him a Tea Baronet. Those who became oil barons, however, became fabulously wealthy and could easily afford to own and race such yachts as those shown above. BUT! Not in Mexico. That wasn't always the case and prior to 1917 Mexico's oil bidness followed the usual trajectory of being developed and owned by foreign corporations, with the biggest share being owned by Royal Dutch Shell and two of the seven sisters. In addition to exploiting the resources, they exploited the people, and, because of low demand in Mexico, shipped most of the oil and profits elsewhere. In its 1917 Constitution, Mexico laid claim to the subsoil, including any and all natural resources therein. Initially, oil company operations in operation as of that date were grandfathered.
Over the years, Mexico and its people received ever less and less benefits from its oil resources and the exploitation and abuses of labor and resulting labor unrest grew greater and greater. Eventually, on March 18, 1938, Mexico's President Lázaro Cárdenas issued an order nationalizing all of the petroleum reserves and related extraction, production and other assets of almost all of the foreign oil companies. All mineral and oil reserves were declared to be the property of the nation and oil assets, in particular, were declared to belong to the newly established Petróleos Mexicanos, aka PEMEX, a state owned company. Bingo, the people's oil company. The previous owners were compensated, of course, though they still kicked up a fuss and whined about their losses.
For what it's worth, today, and every March 18, is a civic holiday in Mexico.
Also on March 18, in 1314, Jacques de Molay was burned at the stake. It has been alleged that he was a reformer and was about to start reforming "any day now" (starting with yet another Crusade), and I'm sure that he was. I'm sure he and Philip IV were both honorable men reformers, for are we not all honorable men reformers? At any rate, in the end, as in the beginning, it was all about money, the Templars were just too damn rich for their own good. I mean, the Templars were the pride of Christendom, but, they seem to have missed this bit:
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,

Hey good morning
Capt. Nat aka 'the wizard of Bristol' designed some pretty amazing boats.
This is an example of the S-class circa 1910. Fine lines.
They can still be seen sailing in local waters to this day.
Thanks for the OT!
question everything
Good morning Captain Q. Great looking boat.
"Legendary" is a word that readily comes to mind wrt Herreshoff, it truly fits him.
be well and have a good one.

Yeah, in the local museum
some examples of his small steam engines are pieces of functional art
Not sure I would be comfortable with a boiler in a wooden boat tho
question everything
Yeah, but fire is fire, ya know, cookstove, boiler,
whatever. Regardless of hull material, however, boilers sometimes blow up.

the boiler is one thing
the firebox to heat the steam is another animal altogether
guess that is why they put whistles on the steamers?
we have cats and ponies on the boats staying warm by
the fires to get somewhere while whistling away
question everything
cats on boats I am extremely familiar with,
ponies not so much.

Thanks for the image.
Good late morning...
..took the better half to the eye doctor this AM and just getting back home.
Nice looking boats. Here's some shots from the maritime museum in Biloxi...
Thanks for the OT!

Good morning Lookout. Thanks for the info and pics.
I need to defer to QMS' greater knowledge on such matters, but the Mary Margaret is quite famous and I always wondered if her flexibility reduced drag (I think almost certainly) and maybe allowed her to exceed hull speed (I think far less likely).
Some of the catboats shown have jibs. When I firts learned of catboats and the cat rig, there were no jibs (nor bowsprits). In fact, the mast was stepped so far forward that no jib would have been possible. Maybe that's what makes "Biloxi catboats" special.

yeah, you can't get a catboat to sail upwind
decently without a jib, therefore the bowsprit to get the
center of effort further forward. The lug sail (with the top boom)
is indicative of the catboat sail plan. Slow but steady compared to
modern sloop designs. The broad beam also steadies them out.
The Biloxi design is a bit different, owing to the flat angles of the
bulwarks (easier to build) and vee shaped hull (tracks better).
Not as kindly in a slop.

Thanks for chiming in. The first cats I ran into were
at a Mission Bay rental service, Marconi, not lug, but no jib and the mast stepped damn near on the bow. Basically a sabot with a pointed bow, my dad rented one and took us kids out (I was very young), and I don't recall if it had a lee board, center board, fixed keel or what.

Russian forces have struck a location where Ukrainian security and defense commanders were holding a meeting, the Defense Ministry claimed on Monday.
The attack was mentioned in passing in the ministry’s daily briefing to the press. It said military commanders and their counterparts from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) were present. The meeting was mentioned among targets chosen for Russian warplanes, missile strikes and artillery in the past 24 hours.

Biden inspired "democracy summit" in Seoul
The irony.
Unfortunately timed to help bolster Yoon's party during the general election April 10. It also lends credence to Yoon's "fake (gajja) news" anti-disinformation campaign. There is an excellent summary of Yoon's repressive administration including efforts to suppress and control the media in this New Yorker article, published last year. A rare breath of fresh air in English language media. I got one free look at the article before I got the pay wall.
The Worrying Democratic Erosions in South Korea
This is from Reuters:
Explainer: Why is South Korea hosting a 'Summit for Democracy'?
In a prior news report Reuters claimed that any backsliding in South Korea was mostly about discrimination against women, and that other complaints about the Yoon administration were overstated.
The Reuters report attempts to distract and minimize the South Korean democratic backsliding, and the obvious authoritarian inclination of the current far right Yoon administration because it caters to US and Japanese foreign policy goals.
South Korea to host third democracy summit with digital threats on agenda
This Hankyoreh column below outlines the real problem of the policies of Yoon Seok-yeol, Han Dong-hun, and other principal figures in the current PPP so called "new right" configuration:
The column goes on to say that today's new right are the descendants of the pro-Japanese collaborator class. This is a key to understanding contemporary South Korea's domestic political scene. This is why statues of independence fighters must be removed from the military academy grounds, and the "bamboo spear song," must be ridiculed.
The tiresome commie witch hunt of Korea's fake conservatives
The real reason for Yoon and Han's politics of antagonism and hate
Members of the assembly elected by a majority of South Koreans are described as "privileged members of the protest generation" rather than the elected majority representing the South Korean people. Note the misuse of the term "collaboration." Everyone in South Korea knows the principal meaning of collaboration in historical context. Han's
Yoon'suse of the word in this way is Orwellian. Above democrats and progressives are characterized as "communists," here as privileged criminals. In fact, Yoon and Han with their politically motivated firings, and prosecutions of political rivals, labor and media figures and journalists, are doing the bidding of traditional corporate chaebol elites. Their interests and families thrived during the dictatorships and the earlier Japanese colonial period. They resent having to share power with the democratic opposition that wrested political and economic concessions from their privileged grasp. There seems to be an emerging consensus online that the democratic party isn't going to lose its majority in National Assembly although it could lose some seats. This is contrary to a recent bandwagon effect, the pollsters and conservative media tried to create in recent weeks in favor of the ruling conservative party. The new Innovation Party of former justice minister Cho Guk, whose family was devastated by Yoon/Han directed political prosecution, looks like it may take 10 or more seats in proportional representative elections. They are allied with the democratic party.

Happy PEMEX day!
Hi all, Hey EL!
A warm Happy PEMEX Day to all! It revolutionized the country. It would us too if used the same way.
Is their a world expropriation day?
Here is a little boat picture... looks like this one is a ms dys pic to me...
We actually stayed in the hotel once, about '83, was a promotion thing. We were glad they sprung for the water view side of the boat though. It was great fun feeding gulls out the porthole windows from the suite. We called a bunch of friends up to come over and party for the evening. The most amazing fantastic marquetry I have ever seen, by factors, were the art pieces on the walls in there. Showers with three faucets: hot fresh, cold fresh, and SALT water~ It was a nice little boat...
Thanks for the nice boats all!
Hove good ones folks!

Three faucets, including instant fresh saltwater,
and fine marquetry sounds very cruisy ; )
What a great playlist, el
I was particularly taken with Eric Woolfson, who was new to me.
Seeing the beauty of those two ships made me think I could possibly overcome on one of them, my lifelong tendency toward sea-sickness.
Thanks el
Good morning Janis, thanks for reading.
Glad you liked the playlist and Woolfson.
Herreshoff's boats are famous for being beautiful, though I don't know if they can cure seasickness. I don't suffer from it so wouldn't have any idea.

' the patch'
The 'patch' worked like magic for many a diehard seasick prone birder. Many that could never go pelagic birding can now. Scopalamine methinks is the magic stuff. There are various forms out now. I only ever had to pull one off a guys neck for hallucinations once. I wish I was seeing the birds he was seeing, flocks he was reporting, in the foam of the wake.
I have been sick a couple times out of a hundred west coast pelagic trips. Short interval is what gets you, not big seas. These catamarans they use a lot now for say whale watching trips are very stable compared to monohulls.
I miss seabirding more than anything... albacore and albatross... two of my favorite things.
P.S. the margquetry had wildlife and nature scenes done with thousands of one of a kind puzzle pieces, using different colored woods instead of paint, for say the green heads of the mallards, and so on ad. infinitum. With incredible detail. Every kind and color of wood known to man it seemed to me. They were astonishing.
Have a great day!

The patch
is a godsend to many people, for sure. Unfortunately, there are a nontrivial number of people (10-15%, as I understand it) who have some side effects with scopalamine- the most annoying being that for some folks it makes seasickness *worse*, to the point of making sufferers seasick while they are still on dry, non-moving land... So for anyone who has never used it: get it at least a week before you get on the boat, so you can do a test run.
I'm one of those folks, and I only ever get motion sickness when on dive boats or sailboats. I've retired from diving, but I ain't gonna retire from sailing. The solution I was shown (by an MD friend), was meclizine ("non-drowsy" Dramamine, among others). It is remarkably benign, and works a treat. Target sells bottles of 100 20mg meclizine tablets OTC for the princely sum of $5 (ask at the pharmacy for their "travel sickness" med). They say to take one a day once you get on a boat. In my opinion, they are a bit optimistic. I take 2 a day for 3 days before even getting on the boat, and then one a day for the duration, and haven't had a bout of La Grippe de Mer in a very long time...
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
Thanks ufs
I have saved the name of the medicine for a time I might go out on a boat again. I do wish I had the opportunity to see more of the coastline of NZ from offshore in a way that I can appreciate.
Happy sailing!
Hi dystopian
I’d take seeing flocks of birds in the foam of a wake over being sick any day! There were times a part of me wished to die during the experience. At least I got over the experience of nausea in the back seat of a car as a child.
Wow, if the guy on the boat was looking backwards and down at the foam of a wake without getting sick, then the patch must really have worked well. Did he get sick after pulling the patch off, or did he continue to cruise along. I suppose being the responsible one you had to keep him safe from hallucinations that might cause a more dire state ; )
I bet you miss it, seeing birds and fish on the same outing.
