The Dreaded Site Meta #3
This is another in a series (goodness knows when it will end) of meta posts intended to discuss site issues and help folks who have recently arrived to orient themselves. For more help for new folks please click on the Welcome, New Members link.
This post will be kind of a mish-mash of issues. We'll start with this one:
Ok, maybe that's overstating it some.
Many folks have come here in response to events at another site and there is a quite reasonable attention to various aspects of that place.
Many other people are noticing that the attention given to that other site commands a lot of space on the community content page.
We are hoping that this focus will subside soon and people will move on and get about the business that we as liberal/progressive/lefties need to be doing; organizing around issues and working for change.
There has also lately been some further discussion about the length and complexity of posts.
We'd like to continue to encourage folks to make use of the open threads. The more that people use them, the more traffic they'll get and the more satisfaction that folks posting in them will have. Somebody just has to get the ball rolling.
We would ask folks to exercise some discretion about posting. There are times when a short post is completely reasonable, for example when you are announcing a liveblog. On the other hand, if you have 3 lines of breaking news about the election, please post it in the open thread. If you post it with a subject line that announces it is breaking news in large friendly letters followed by a brief indication of what it's about in the open thread and people get used to looking for breaking news there, then the posts that other folks spend a great deal of time researching, writing and polishing won't get lost in a deluge of announcements and breaking news posts.
If you are looking for those longer form articles, that is what we post to the front page. There are a number of front page writers at the site, but we are quite happy to post the good work of any participant there. We have a bias towards issues-oriented work rather than election advocacy.
Ok, some last bits of housekeeping...

Opossums
Make sure you get a very tiny baby. They are urban-adapted wild creatures. All fangs, teeth and claws, and they are fearless. Take it from someone who has had to remove poisoned ones from under sofas, etc. They love rat poison, too. They will take on feral cats. The cats usually lose, and it's not pretty.

Yep...
a critter that should not be messed with, especially when cornered.
They are very short-lived
Only about 2 years max. And as a teacher of mine once raised one from a baby, I can testify they are not domesticatable. The cute ball of fluff grew up into a shark-faced creature, swelling up with fear/rage, hissing and threatening any hand that came near.

I have a true possum story
from way back when. IMO, they are not cute or cuddly, especially after you wake up with one in your bedroom in the middle of the night.
The rest of that story, I would rather forget.
That one is kinda cute, just a baby. I guess you need one of them, JtC.

should get himself a possum toupee, it would look better than that comb over pompadour he sports.

very beautiful
opossums will eat roaches, i once saw a baby possum stuff a palmetto bug/big fla roach in its mouth quicker than you can blink your eye. the bug did not have a chance, and there was only a few legs sticking out of its mouth before it all disappeared.
very few nocturnal creatures will have a roach-based diet, i know that chickens will eat them but they don't see very well at night.
They make the...
weirdest hissing sound too. The first time I heard one in the woods it had me totally stumped until I finally spotted it. Now I'll never forget it, it sounds alien.
they also eat ticks...
which puts them on my happy list.
roaches (from Colorado)
I thought you were supposed to smoke roaches.....

I enjoy writing the essay for the Open Threads...
And I would like to continue with it. I admit that I tend to be pretty ALL over the place with them, but it's been a nice way to spend Saturday night, IMHO.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
afternoon dmw...
all over the place is fine. there's no known limit to the number of thoughts one can have.
i'm enjoying your essays and it appears that others are, too.
as they say, write on.
TY, joe! I sure appreciate this post. Have a great day.

you have a pleasant day, too.
That's a good point about using the open threads
So that it will encourage people to use the open threads.
I think it is very tempting for people to post off the top of their heads here just because there aren't tons of things being posted. Space isn't necessarily something calling out to be filled. As it is, there is more here than I can keep up with, pieces I would like to make the time for, but the thing is there is this whole rest of the Internets out there that keeps sending me stuff I want to read, too, and I have more time on my hands than many. So really it's just fine not to have a constant stream of tidbits getting posted as essays all the time.
Stay on track. Stay in lane. Don't throw rocks.
it's a tipping point thing...
people post things because they want other people to pay attention to those things. if everybody uses the open threads for their short observations, newsbits, etc., then that will be the place to get attention for your stuff. and, since it's all together in one place, it's a matter of one click to get to it rather than clicking on lots of different threads.
why I like to write Open Threads
I can talk about whatever's on my mind, at length. We just don't have enough discussion about the groups in Liverpool from 1961 to1964. (I also like to write about the theory and philosophy of electoral politics).
So I've found some of my heroes on Facebook and have become "friends". And some of those friends actually like chatting because they're real people, after all. Like Ted Taylor, known as Kingsize Taylor. For those of you who know background stuff about the Beatles, there's a recording of them at the Star Club in Hamburg from early 1963. It was Ted who taped it. And his group was pretty cool too, a rocking band. Well anyway, it's a thrill for me to chat with him and occasionally Brian Griffiths from the Big Three. If you know the Big Three you're my kind of person.
Yeah....when I write an OT (that's Open Thread, people!) I enjoy finding appropriate music...or inappropriate if I'm in that kind of mood.
Meanwhile, here's my Facebook friend, Ted Taylor, as he is now, still rocking.
afternoon shahryar...
and i like reading your open threads because it takes me back to my (wildly misspent) youth and puts songs that i haven't heard in ages (and some that i missed) back under my nose, er, ears.
thanks!
Keep rocking', Bro
And don't forget about Neil Young and Bob Seger, still rocking' hard after 50 years.
when I go home next time I will visit the Star Club
if it still exists. Back in the days I was under the surveillance of some good parents and that meant I would never go to downtown Hamburg to visit the Star Club at age 15. Now I think it's time I could safely do that, what do you think?
https://www.euronews.com/live
in my old age I've found out how close Hamburg is to England
my young mind, not having the sense to look at a map, imagined Hamburg being somewhere near Munich, which is the equivalent of somebody thinking Boston is in Texas. But it must be about the same distance from London as Edinburgh is. (after looking that up...415 to Edinburgh, 572 to Hamburg)
For my point of reference that'd be like driving from home (Portland, Oregon....don't move here please...come visit) to San Jose. I'd always imagined this super long trip for the British groups. Of course the Liverpool groups had the extra distance but it's still equivalent to driving down to Los Angeles. Well....maybe it was a trek.
I would think that going to the Star Club or any venue that you could have gone to as a youngster wouldn't be as exciting now but if I found myself there, and if Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes were playing, yes! I'd go!

Ferry crossing took around 6 hours
- Harwich to Halland - much longer than the short Dover-Calais hop.
I did some paralegal work in Harwich many moons ago.

Hamburg to Liverpool today is 13.5 hours car trip
as you don't have to take the ferry anymore. That's round about the trip from Washington DC to Quebec in CA by car.
If I talk to my sister about going from Washington DC to San Francisco, I always ask her if she would just hop over from Hamburg in Germany to Kinshasha in Congo Dem. Rep.
Hamburg, Germany to Moscow, Russia is about San Francisco to Rapid City. Peanuts...:-)

When I was
growing up in England any car journey over thirty miles was a bfd - we were useless on that score

Greetings
Hello!
Glad to have found my way over here. Very nice place to land. Really like the site and the discussions. Been lurking mostly due to RL drama but still try to look in a few times a day. Keep up the great work and the awesome growth!
Best,

evening hckad...
good to see you. i hope that your real life drama calms down so that you can delurk.
take care.
Hey Joe, good thread.
With the big increase in essays it can be difficult to find the morning OT, especially if , like I often do, you get here late in the day. It can be found of course but can take considerable scrolling to get down to it, which may or may not have anything to do with how often people are commenting in it. Just wondering if moving it the Front Page might increase it's usage since it would be much more noticeable. Just a thought.

evening bo...
well, i think that the banner will probably help and i'll talk to jtc about perhaps making it "sticky" on top of the page, too.

evening do, jb...
thanks, have a great evening!
Hold on to your hat in that wind dude!
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
the winds have died down...
now it's just cold.
Good idea!
Sticking it to the top of the page would do the trick for sure.

Mea Culpa
This is the first time I've ever understood what an "open thread" was. I'm pretty sure I never read a single one of them over at DKOS simply because the title "open thread" means nothing so I read other titles that seemed more pertinent.
I'll restrict my future stories to more substantive items with attribution.

evening snapple...
not a big deal. thanks for reading and helping build the community.
Thanks for the Meta
it helps.
evening jamess...
thanks for reading and in case i haven't had an opportunity to say so, welcome!
Thank you joe shikspack
This place is very cool.
It's a privilege to be here.
Thanks for the warm welcome, to so many 'orange refugees'.
Hi Joe!
Would it be helpful to add something small to a comment, showing you have something in the open thread. A star, or peace sign, or whatever.
That would be super easy for me to do.

Hi Jamess,
I have always liked your writing. Glad you are here.
To thine own self be true.
Open Thread "topic" is an oxymoron.
The topic is then just an essay without an informative headline. The discussion that evolves from the topic is either pertinent to the topic, and thus not open, or it isn't pertinent to the topic and is consequently the other OT--Off Topic.
Generally speaking, Open Threads are gathering points for habitual denizens to greet each other during the day and share matters of personal interest that don't necessarily pertain to any discussion currently being dissected by other essays.
These personal interests, happenings of the day, are often a means of establishing rapport and cohesion, and a sense of community among the habitual denizens, who then by a mutual sharing of personal trivia get to know more about each other than the limited information available on their respective bio blurbs.
In other words, Open Threads start out empty and lead wherever they may without regard to any particular topic.
(At least, that's their meaning everywhere I've ever been.)

JtC: Plan to upgrade the site any time soon?
I ask because it's been acting strangely
all week for me - as well as others
judging by comments.
For me it's gone from not being able
to get in or navigate from one page to
another without getting a Webpage not
available message since Monday to
today, Thursday, IsItDown saying the
server is not responding several times
throughout the day.
So ... any plans to upgrade any time
soon? Or is this, heavens forfend, a
DDOS-type problem (I ask because
the site has previously handled more
registered users online without even
slowing down).
Thanks for your efforts.

We've been having record traffic the last three days and this server is at full capacity.
the internet is all abuzz with
FBI indictment, and that is just the bare beginning of information shooting around and truth seekers looking for a way to get involved. Or, that's what I see. It's Splodin'!

We probably need a fund raising party.
Together, we can pull our own weight.
Here's what happened at Daily Kos, that relates to this:
Yep Pluto...
see the new statement I added today at the bottom of the page below the swimmer image. People Power, let's use this internet thing.
I like it.
That was a long ago motto that Americans once used to describe their government. Now, it is scrupulously avoided. Heh.
You might want to switch the "by" and the "for."
Heh...
you're right, thanks!
I agree with you, Pluto.
I like the new motto, too. Had missed it
because I never scroll down that far on
my cell screen.
I also agree with your suggestion regarding swapping the order of the prepositions.
As for the history of the motto you refer
to, can you be more enlightening? I've
never heard of it until tonight.

JtC, about the Search function ...
Is there a particular reason that search
results are not returned in chronological
or reverse chronological order?
Is there some way to use the Advanced
search function to get results in, say,
reverse chronological order?
Thanks!

Why didn't I think of that?
