On this day in history:

-

1435 – The Pope pronounced the bull Sicut Dudum; forbidding the enslavement of Canary Islands' indigenous people who had converted to christianity or who were in the process of so doing (but not the rest of the population). This order, simple and clear as it was, nonetheless had to be repeated even though it was, itself, something of a repeat.

1830 – The Great Fire of New Orleans started.

1888 – The National Geographic Society was founded

1893 – U.S. Marines landed in Honolulu to prevent queen Liliuokalani from abrogating the Bayonet Constitution. This was a classic US style "Public-Private Partnership" wherein the government allied itself with powerful private interests and oligarchs in order to help the oligarchs arrogate yet more power as well as the property and rights of the citizenry to itself. As ever, the underlying goal was to force the masses into serfdom or servitude. In other parts of the world this merger of public and private interests is, quite correctly, known as fascism.

1898 – Émile Zola's J'accuse…! was published

1942 – Henry Ford patented a plastic automobile, which, as far as I know, was never built

1968 – Johnny Cash performed live at Folsom State Prison.

2018 – A false emergency alert caused widespread panic in Hawaii. Perhaps they feared another invasion by the US Marines.

1929 – Joe Pass, guitarist and composer

1938 – Daevid Allen, singer, songwriter and guitarist

1938 – Shivkumar Sharma, santoor player

1946 – Eero Koivistoinen, saxophonist, composer, and conductor

1961 – Wayne Coyne, singer, songwriter and musician

1864 – Stephen Foster, composer and songwriter

1906 – Alexander Stepanovich Popov, physicist

1929 – Wyatt Earp, gunslinger

1962 – Ernie Kovacs, comedian, actor and writer

Peach Melba was created for Victorian era opera star Nellie Melba by the greatest chef of the time, Auguste Escoffier, who also named some thin, crispy toasts in her honor years later.

Ironically the fries you pictured used to be fried in tallow and were much healthier than today's fried in vegetable oil. Have not eaten at Mickey D's in many years myself.

Why are vegetable oils bad? Consider how they are made...

Butter is a simple process that comes when cream separates from milk. This is a natural process that only takes a little patience. Once the cream and milk have separated, all you need to do is skim off the cream and shake it until it becomes butter. (And it really is as easy as it sounds, I’ve made butter lots of times. Takes about 5 minutes.)

Now let’s compare that to the production of canola oil. Here’s an overly simplified version of the process:

Step 1: Find some “canola seeds.” Oh wait, they don’t exist. Canola oil is actually made from a hybrid version of the rapeseed… most likely genetically modified and heavily treated with pesticides.

Step 2: Heat the rapeseeds at unnaturally high temperatures so that they oxidize and are rancid before you ever buy them.

Step 3: Process with a petroleum solvent to extract the oils.

Step 4: Heat some more and add some acid to remove any nasty wax solids that formed during the first processing.

Step 5: Treat the oil with more chemicals to improve the color.

Step 6: Deodorize the oil to mask the horrific smell from the chemical processing.

Of course, if you want to take your vegetable oils one step further, just hydrogenated it until it becomes a solid. Now you have margarine and all its trans-fatty wonder.

And don't go on a fries only diet...you'll go blind!

An extreme case of “fussy” junk-food eating led a young man in the UK to actually go blind, according to a new case report.

The patient involved in the case decided in his adolescence he only liked chips, french fries (a type of crisp) and the occasional slice of white bread.

When he lost his sight, clinical tests showed extremely severe nutritional deficiencies.

Have a good day everyone. I'm off to Birmingham for a rare band practice.

@Lookout His famous line was "when was the last time you squeezed a vegetable and got oil out of it?" Maybe some vegetable have oils - but these are probably the good ones like avocado, olive, etc....

Yeah vegetable oil is totally bad news.

and gets the point across well, but the answer is obvious to anybody who remembers or who has ever seen old fashioned peanut butter. Though most commercial peanut oil is probably chemically extracted and processed, it can be cold pressed and is a good high temp accompaniment to cold pressed olive oil.

grease used backwhen, but tallow makes good sense for a chain of burger joints; beef all the way.

Not to worry about the diet, I was just poking at the veganism bandwagon (dedicated omnivore here). Interesting that the dude went blind, though, and probably had a ton of other issues as well.

@mimi
well before the American Revolution. But unlike most other countries, the US has continued to pillage, rob and plunder foreign nations to this very day, especially if these nations are not willing to bow down and give over an inordinate share of their resources or wealth in servitude.

The massive military is the prime reason the US became the wealthiest country in the world. The citizens innately understand this fact and it is why the military is and has been (for the most part) the most popular aspect of the government. So when the great Wurlitzer's of War start cranking out their cunning and deceptive melodies, a large part of the populace moves in lock step to take up arms to make keep America great wealthy.

But scratch below the surface of any military conflict the US is or has been involved with and you will find corporate greed and malfeasance oozing out like stinking puss.

to de-escalate Iran conflict":

The Duran Quick Take: Episode 431.

The Duran’s Alex Christoforou and Editor-in-Chief Alexander Mercouris discuss how the Trump White House worked through the Swiss Embassy, immediately following the death of Soleimani, to de-escalate the crisis with Iran.

Cutting through the fiery comments, tweets and media propaganda, Trump worked diplomatic back channels to find a way out of a potential war scenario. This latest fact reported by the WSJ shows once again that the neocon wing of Trump's administration manipulated the US President in his decision to take out Soleimani.

Alexander Mercouris predicts at the end that Mike Pompeo's days of influence over Trump might be over pretty soon. That wouldn't be so bad, would it?

I just came across this video this morning with the dude making the point that we are now at a stage in capitalism where our oil titans are perfectly happy with destroying oil and gas producing countries (so they simply can't compete with US oil and gas producers) because we actually now have all the oil we need at least for now:

Authorities in the Philippines are warning that a volcano near the capital could be on the verge of a dangerous eruption. The Taal Volcano, about 60 kilometers south of Manila, began spewing ash and lava on Sunday. Taal is one of the most active volcanoes in a region where earthquakes and eruptions are a daily part of life. Manila's international airport was temporarily closed and tens of thousands have fled, while others are refusing to leave their homes and farms.

As French President Emmanuel Macron holds a summit with leaders of African G5 Sahel nations in a bid to shore up the legitimacy of France’s military operation, we take a closer look at the work being carried out by French troops on the ground. For more than five years now, they have been deployed as part of Operation Barkhane, billed as the last line of defence against jihadists in the Sahel region. Our team reports.

Organic cold pressed sesame oil is my favorite oil. Flax seed oil and olive oil as well. All cold pressed organic. And organic butter from pasture fed cows. Guess I need to rethink fried foods. Eat them very rarely. I think of food as medicine and as such oils are very important.

Another busy day organizing. Six weeks to go. Or is it five now. Yipes.

Thanks for the ot. Be well...

Good day for Fred the Fish, thank you.

Can't seem to get out of first gear today; okay, not so much has to be done. Maybe paying for over-eating yesterday.

Longing for sand in my shoes.

Blind from fish and chips; could the newspaper ink have also contributed?

Reminds me to purchase malt vinegar next time out. Oil, use mostly olive, love sesame, never tried flax seed oil, do keep flax meal on hand and i guess this news means that canola oil doesn't have appellation controls. Smile

Anyways, have a good one.

Fred the Fish, with or without malt vinegar. The closest I ever come to fried fish is pan seared, though I do recall in my youth cutting it into small chunks, breading with masa harina mixed with pepper and more or less flash frying enough multiple small batches to constitute a couple of servings in minimal il in the bottom of a wok (requiring frequent turning and stirring) - it was an interesting product, but not up to the other stuff we do with it now.

Sand in your shoes or in your toenails?

have a good one.
