On this day in history:
1435 – The Pope pronounced the bull Sicut Dudum; forbidding the enslavement of Canary Islands' indigenous people who had converted to christianity or who were in the process of so doing (but not the rest of the population). This order, simple and clear as it was, nonetheless had to be repeated even though it was, itself, something of a repeat.
1830 – The Great Fire of New Orleans started.
1888 – The National Geographic Society was founded
1893 – U.S. Marines landed in Honolulu to prevent queen Liliuokalani from abrogating the Bayonet Constitution. This was a classic US style "Public-Private Partnership" wherein the government allied itself with powerful private interests and oligarchs in order to help the oligarchs arrogate yet more power as well as the property and rights of the citizenry to itself. As ever, the underlying goal was to force the masses into serfdom or servitude. In other parts of the world this merger of public and private interests is, quite correctly, known as fascism.
1898 – Émile Zola's J'accuse…! was published
1942 – Henry Ford patented a plastic automobile, which, as far as I know, was never built
1968 – Johnny Cash performed live at Folsom State Prison.
2018 – A false emergency alert caused widespread panic in Hawaii. Perhaps they feared another invasion by the US Marines.
Born this day in:
1866 – George Gurdjieff, mystic and philosopher
1887 – Sophie Tucker, singer and actress
1924 – Paul Feyerabend, philosopher and academic
1925 – Vanita Smythe, singer and actress
1929 – Joe Pass, guitarist and composer
1938 – Daevid Allen, singer, songwriter and guitarist
1938 – Shivkumar Sharma, santoor player
1946 – Eero Koivistoinen, saxophonist, composer, and conductor
1961 – Wayne Coyne, singer, songwriter and musician
Died this day in:
1599 – Edmund Spenser, poet
1625 – Jan Brueghel the Elder, painter
1717 – Maria Sibylla Merian, entomologist and illustrator
1864 – Stephen Foster, composer and songwriter
1906 – Alexander Stepanovich Popov, physicist
1929 – Wyatt Earp, gunslinger
1962 – Ernie Kovacs, comedian, actor and writer
2010 – Teddy Pendergrass, singer and songwriter
2017 – Magic Alex, Heh

Peachy keen Monday all
Peach Melba was created for Victorian era opera star Nellie Melba by the greatest chef of the time, Auguste Escoffier, who also named some thin, crispy toasts in her honor years later.
question everything
Good morning QMS, thanks for the information on the 3
Melbas - Peach, Toast & Nellie. I know pretty much nothing about Escoffier except that he was supposed to be a great chef.
have a good one.

Good morning
Ironically the fries you pictured used to be fried in tallow and were much healthier than today's fried in vegetable oil. Have not eaten at Mickey D's in many years myself.
Why are vegetable oils bad? Consider how they are made...

And don't go on a fries only diet...you'll go blind!

Have a good day everyone. I'm off to Birmingham for a rare band practice.

Yeah vegetable oil is totally bad news.

Good morning, FN, thanks for reading. That's a good quote
and gets the point across well, but the answer is obvious to anybody who remembers or who has ever seen old fashioned peanut butter. Though most commercial peanut oil is probably chemically extracted and processed, it can be cold pressed and is a good high temp accompaniment to cold pressed olive oil.
have a good one.

Good morning Lookout. Hadn't thought about the specific
grease used backwhen, but tallow makes good sense for a chain of burger joints; beef all the way.
Not to worry about the diet, I was just poking at the veganism bandwagon (dedicated omnivore here). Interesting that the dude went blind, though, and probably had a ton of other issues as well.
have a good one.

The American military have been de facto mercenaries
well before the American Revolution. But unlike most other countries, the US has continued to pillage, rob and plunder foreign nations to this very day, especially if these nations are not willing to bow down and give over an inordinate share of their resources or wealth in servitude.
The massive military is the prime reason the US became the wealthiest country in the world. The citizens innately understand this fact and it is why the military is and has been (for the most part) the most popular aspect of the government. So when the great Wurlitzer's of War start cranking out their cunning and deceptive melodies, a large part of the populace moves in lock step to take up arms to
makekeep Americagreatwealthy. But scratch below the surface of any military conflict the US is or has been involved with and you will find corporate greed and malfeasance oozing out like stinking puss.

Destroying countries instead of controlling them
I just came across this video this morning with the dude making the point that we are now at a stage in capitalism where our oil titans are perfectly happy with destroying oil and gas producing countries (so they simply can't compete with US oil and gas producers) because we actually now have all the oil we need at least for now:
Good morning Wally. Capitalist competition in its finest form -
go destroy the competition's output. A tried and true method, whether it be bombing, torching, scattering or merely spreading malicious rumors about its quality and safety.
Thanks for the clips and have a good one.

Organic cold pressed sesame oil is my favorite oil. Flax seed oil and olive oil as well. All cold pressed organic. And organic butter from pasture fed cows. Guess I need to rethink fried foods. Eat them very rarely. I think of food as medicine and as such oils are very important.
Another busy day organizing. Six weeks to go. Or is it five now. Yipes.
Thanks for the ot. Be well...

Good morning magi. The one time I tried to press a sesame
seed, it squirted out of the tweezers and got lost. Olives I can handle, and often do.
Thanks for reading.

Good morning, el,
Good day for Fred the Fish, thank you.
Can't seem to get out of first gear today; okay, not so much has to be done. Maybe paying for over-eating yesterday.
Longing for sand in my shoes.
Blind from fish and chips; could the newspaper ink have also contributed?
Reminds me to purchase malt vinegar next time out. Oil, use mostly olive, love sesame, never tried flax seed oil, do keep flax meal on hand and i guess this news means that canola oil doesn't have appellation controls.
Anyways, have a good one.
Good morning smiley, thanks for dropping in. Glad you liked
Fred the Fish, with or without malt vinegar. The closest I ever come to fried fish is pan seared, though I do recall in my youth cutting it into small chunks, breading with masa harina mixed with pepper and more or less flash frying enough multiple small batches to constitute a couple of servings in minimal il in the bottom of a wok (requiring frequent turning and stirring) - it was an interesting product, but not up to the other stuff we do with it now.
Sand in your shoes or in your toenails?
have a good one.

Good afternoon, Irish. That isn't too surprising. Thanks for

My Grandma did it
My grandparents lived to the ripe old age of 97-98. They died within 1 1/2 months of each other. Marriage lasted 78 years.
