Open Thread: I've never been to Spain, but I kinda like the music ..

I have, in fact, liked it since I was in my teens. By the time this posts I will have finally spent over half of a month there, and I will have just returned home. It seems like I spent most of this calendar year so far writing ahead to stockpile stuff to cover various vacations, surgeries and other entertainment, and this is going in the bank with two days left before we leave, making it a respite and a celebration. Here is some of that music. -
I guess that one should start with Carlos Montoya, I know that I did, some ages ago.
-
-
Concierto de Aranjuez - If you've never heard this but find it familiar, blame Miles and we'll get there later, I promise.
-
-
And then one discovers this guy, my first Album of his was "Tres Guitarras Tiene Sabicas", a great album. This is bulieras.

-
What can I say, this man's "name" is an honorific, Manitas de Plata
-
-
There are families or styles of flamenco, such as the Malagueñas, Farrucas, and Sevillianas
-
Una Sevilliana

-
OK, about Concierto de Aranjuez, a magnificient piece of music, and an inspiration to many --

It is an open thread, so go for it, presumably we can all talk and listen at the same time. -

Hope you had a great trip!
Spain is on my bucket list. I like Mexico and have a couple of birding trips designed which I hope to get to eventually.
Welcome home and sleep well to escape your lag.
Thanks for the stockpiled OT's!

Good morning Lookout. Thanks for reading. Didn't get in any
dedicated biding, though we did spot some birds here and there, of course. Have a good one.

What about cats, did you see any Spanish cats?
World map split right down the middle, opening and closing too many times since Printed August 2004. Not a good thing, symbolically speaking. The world being torn apart, after wearing out...
Anyway, was thinking if Spain gave up there Bull stuff, maybe they can still "Run with the Cats" every year, because you know what they say about herding cats... ? I forget. LOL the more fear, the more funny. Life really is what it's cracked up to be. haha prohibere loquentes

Thanks for the welcome. Yep, Spain unleashed unmitigated
horror on the Americas, beginning with their Catholic Majesties and in particular her Catholic Majesty Isabella. Assorted venal, greedy, sociopathic, popes and lesser church functionaries (sorry to be so redundant there) aided and abetted. I always liked that song, no matter how many burgers it took him to write it.

Good morning dk. It seems that most Spaniards probably
agree with you, it is becoming a thing of the past, and is even outlawed in some places like Barcelona. I doubt we outsiders will ever know how popular it ever was, I met plenty of folks who didn't like it and never had, just as there are a lot of USA folks who never liked boxing but just shrugged it off as part of the cultural background. It is, at any rate, becomeing even less popular, especially among the youth, though it is, ironically, something of a tourist attraction in places where it persists.
I never got into GOT, sorry.
Have a good one.

No- I tried watching
Looking at the MSM, America's big concerns are GoT, lame sitcoms, and whether the Kentucky Derby winner should have been disqualified. Maybe it is just me, but I think that a minimum of 25% of the available time on the public airwaves should be factual, substantive news: not speculation on Kim Kardashian's IQ, or who wore what to an awards show, or whether some unknown source just kicked off the next juicy scandal.
Maybe when someone sinks the Lincoln or one of its escorts, that sort of thing will finally make the news. Bolton's gonna get his war, one way or another, and it will get no coverage until it is already way too late and a few thousand sailors are on the bottom... There is no chance that an antiwar message will be allowed to derail that.
TV. Nope, not a fan, and getting to be less of one every year. But your mileage may vary.
On edit: that kind of "get off my lawn!" rant needs an appropriate musical accompaniment. So I must present Thomas Dolby's wonderful ode to Pulp Culture...
Heh, good morning skod, thanks for the rant and the vid.
I hear echoes of that rant ringing down the decades, from Lenny and Mort, the beats, Carlin and too many others to mention. It seems to go back almost to the beginnings of network TV. "The medium is the message" - Mcluhan said that. I wonder how deep it goes? Scans, bits and currents, scintillations, hmmmm.

Too many questions unanswered.
How did Jamie Lannister go from golden haired to dark haired? Cercei’s hair seemed to have darkened, too, but not as much.
Is deserting ones post at the Night’s Watch no longer punishable by death? Jon heading north of the Wall seems like what would have been considered desertion.
Dany wasn’t always destined for the Iron Throne. She was traded to the Dothraki to give her whiny brother that privilege. Doesn’t anyone remember that?
Didn’t anyone notice how King Bran had the same expression that Littlefinger had when pursuing the Iron Throne?
Will Queen Sansa end up like Elizabeth I, ending her reign unmarried with no heir? The end of the Starks?
Was this a parable for our polluted world, ending up full of disposable coffee cups and water bottles? Not even the Marianas Trench is safe from our trash, so why should this fictional world?

Loved it.
Best anti-war show ever made.
No wonder the corporate hacks are ginning everyone up to hate it.
The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

Immigrant taxi-driver suicides in NYC? It wasn’t just Uber+Lyft
As in the 2008 meltdown, it was unscrupulous, unregulated financial shenanigans, this time in the medallion market and lending business.

Immigrants were induced to take out loans they didn’t understand and couldn’t afford so that middlemen in the taxi-medallion business like this could prosper:

Exactly. The epitome of a savvy capitalist is one who
makes a killing, which means someone else must suffer. No wonder Social Darwinism was/is so popular among capitalists.

Looking forward to hearing about your travels. I've been fortunate to visit different parts of Spain in the past and find it a beautiful place. (Save for the dog excrement all over the streets of Madrid!)
(I was going to insert a photo, but the File Browser doesn't seem to work for me).
Rest well!
Good morning, Eagles, thanks. FWIW, I didn't notice much dog
poop in Madrid, so I was lucky of they've got that under better control.

I've never been to Spain but I like that music too,
both the standard "classical" repertoire and the trad. flamenco style from which it is derived. I'll confess to having been ignorant about the genre for most of my life. That ended when our son started taking guitar lessons and I was forced to take a crash course.
A couple of my favorite recording are the "roots" albums by Paco de Lucia and the Gipsy Kings.
It's interesting that two of the most recognizable Spanish guitar tunes, Asturias and Malagueña de Lecuona, were both composed on piano. Here's one of my favorite pieces:

Good afternoon, Az. Paco de Lucia is also the guy who
introduced the cajon, a (Brazilian??) folk instrument into flamenco. Thanks for the video.

. . . look forward to hearing about Spain. Whenever I think about flamenco dancing I remember the Australian movie "Strictly Ballroom." Quirky, funny.
Since this is an OT I want to make a Bernie comment. I have donated very small amounts so several other campaigns, Tulsi, Mike Gravel, Marianne Williamson . . . and I like Andrew too.
Bernie is doing something incredibly wonderful while he is campaigning this time. He is not just doing his stump speech every time. He is focusing on specific issues and going into great detail. This weekend I watched the town hall in SC on education. As a former teacher and parent, I thought it was excellent. And as an Iowa farm kid, still part owner of a farm there, the town hall in Iowa I watched about a month ago which dealt with a plan to help small farmers just blew my mind. Of course Tulsi's antiwar speeches, Andrew's UBI interviews, Mike Gravel's extremely progressive views, and even Marianne's Dept. of peace and other progressive views add to the mix.
So what's happening is that these candidates are building a progressive platform and educating the masses big time.
Bernie is still the energizer bunny. He keeps working and working.

Another impressive thing about these town halls . . .
He has two or three local speakers passionately and intelligently addressing the same topic before he takes the stage. Really reinforces the message with the audience IMO.

Oh,
Good morning, enhydra
Welcome home. I didn't realize the pre-writing and planning efforts you were going to to give us our open threads. Thank you!
Any pics of the trip? For later, some day when you're rested and not too busy.
Winter is trying to hang on here. Had about 10 minutes of small hail Friday! Now we're in for rain all day, overnight, and most of tomorrow. Temps in mid-30s overnight. Don't know what happened to Spring.
I planted a rose bush Saturday. It is a bit smaller than 2 feet tall by 2 feet wide. A bubble gum pink. I love it so much I paid $18 for a box from UPS when I couldn't find one in 2 grocery stores and a liquor store to cover it with during today's and tomorrow's winds, rain and cold. Hope it takes root and makes it!
Good afternoon, O'linda, thanks. I have pics, but also now
realize that I also caught a cold on the flight home (half the plane was coughing), so who knows when I'll get around to dealing with them and putting some up here.
Have a great one.

Good afternoon, magi. The effects of the rain on the yard and
garden are amazing. A ton more weeds and such to deal with, among other things. Got a surprise gullywasher in Barcelons, supposed to be 0.3 mm but rained hard most of the day. Whatever can be causing all of this I wonder snidely.

Good morning Anja, wine was mostly good, mostly Rioja and
other tempranillos (Ribera del duero, etc>). Tapas generally pretty good too, though we mostly passed on the whole Tapas scene other than bocadillos, usually iberico jamon and manchego queso. Never got around to trying the suckling pig.
