Some views from the last, very cold week.

That's a nice impression of the landscape. How different the two are. The photo is bold and static, while the drawing is delicate and loose. I like both.

thank you dystopian. the pond was such a great place to draw. hard to find the right places. over the years we have used up a lot of them so finding this made us so happy. the drawing is not finished. funny how I can see what I need to do when I photograph it. think I will do this in the future because it is so helpful.

both mediums can be so graphic, and by photographing your drawing you can find another layer of light and shape to enhance, especially visible, I think, in b+w.

I'm around, and without cold, so rest well and get better soon.

Evening all. I’ve had my new camera for almost 48 hours now, but limited time to use it. It’s already clear though that I have a lot of learning and practice to do before I find an ease in using it. It’s a Panasonic Lumix LX 100 11. I’ll try my best to avoid becoming overwhelmed by the multitude of features on the camera. I thought to simplify things I’d start with one object, a dried fungus, to use as a subject for trying out some of those features.

The size and feel of the camera in my hand feels right. I like the manual capabilities and the quality of the lens. I wish it had a longer focal length, but it has amazing macro possibilities.

@janis b @janis b
I've found the best way to learn how to use all the features of a new camera is to sit down with the camera in one hand and the manual in the other. As you read through the manual, perform all adjustments or settings described. Your first photo looks like you're doing well so far.

@Socialprogressive

So far I have just been exploring the more obvious features but will have to sit down with the manual and try to follow its directions. My tendency so far has been to google a question I have whose answer is not obvious to me ... but it's a little haphazard.

@janis b I have a Lumix ZS60. Love the features but am not especially thrilled by the limitations of the tiny CMOS chip. However, the ZS100 has a MUCH larger chip so my guess is you will grow to love this thing!

Have fun!

These were taken at La Jolla Cove. I took 10 shots trying to catch one airborne. The shot posted was my fifth try of those ten shots. Most of the rest were shots of Sea lion butt going back into the water.

Still haven't started yet to take photos again. I am kinda afraid to post anything. Went through my messy computer and found old ones from 2011 and some videos I took, raw unedited and unprofessional. But they are now my memories of the times I lived near DC. How do you call a person who hasn't a home but always feels homesick? A dummy, I guess. Wink

that first shot is very cool. is that a program that makes it into a horseshoe? thought of you when posting the drawing. pretty much anybody can learn to draw. I used to teach as a grad student and out of every ~30 people only one or two just could not make the eye to hand leap. brain thing I think. if you can write your signature you have all the skills you need to draw. just takes practice.

@magiamma

I'm one of the 32 people who you wouldn't be able to teach how to draw. Trust me I've tried doing it by learn to draw programs. I have great eye hand coordination, but for some reason not when it comes to drawing.

The app that makes it is called 360 and you first take a panoramic photo and it does that. This spring I'll take my iPad for photos instead of the cheap phone that makes everything look yellow. This should be fun doing panoramics of the trees. Would love to get a new camera like the one Janis has.

BTW Janis. The boots are on the cusp, the site's bad ass lawyer.

Nice ice B.R., sorry about that... great sky shot too. I love yer pond Magi, both the photo and especially the sketch. Your fungi is great Janis. Amazing how tasty some of those can be, not to mention some other properties of some. Those sealions are fantastic S.P.! Wonderful photos.

For those that don't know the way to tell sealions from seals is that seals do not have external ears. Which as you see are quite obvious on SP's sealion photos. Love that jump shot. These are California Sea Lion, from about Sta. Cruz or so north you start getting Steller's Sealion which is larger. Sealion populations have really exploded in the last four decades. I think it is generally believed mostly due to the constant indescriminate shooting of every shark on sight by fisherman for 60 or more years in CA. The fisherman blamed the sharks for eating their fish so they shot them all. Then the sealions exploded. Turned out the sealions were eating the fish, not the sharks, and the sharks were keeping the sealions in check. A great lesson in the dangers of homegrown biology experts.

I'll see if I can find some pix in a bit...

The cold has kept me inside for a couple of weeks now but it appears that the big freeze has moved on and I'm so looking forward to finally getting outside tomorrow. Since I have no recent shots and in keeping with the polar theme tonight I dug up some photos of some winter beauty that caught my eye while exploring winter's wonderland in bygone years.

@janis b Appreciate the kind words. My favorite of that group is the second one. That spot was absolutely mesmerizing and I will never forget it. I was in a canoe and I had pulled right in under the rock overhang, just sat there spellbound for several minutes. The water was ever so slightly moving and the sun hitting it was reflecting it up onto the ceiling of the overhang in an amazing animation of ripples of sunlight and water that was, well, it's just impossible to describe. And unfortunately although I took many shots I was never able to come close to capturing the magic. But that's something that I often come up against, not being able to capture the true beauty of nature. A decent photographer with a decent camera can always capture some of the beauty but to get the mood is a whole nother thing, at least that's been my experience anyway. At the end of the day I'm very often disappointed when I get home and look at what I've accomplished. The pictures are nice enough most of the time but the mood is seldom translated. Still workin on it though. ( :

@magiamma That seems to be the peoples choice in that series.
Lovin your drawing, I'm so envious of anyone who can translate onto paper with pen or brush the things that capture their imagination. I've tried to paint and or draw so many times but I'm truly hopeless at anything of that nature. Thankfully photography gives me the opportunity to bring home at least some remembrance of the feelings invoked.

Thanks everyone for all the great photos.

I live too far south for much in snow pics, by no accident. This was the blizzard of 2016, which was a solid 15 minutes like this and 15 lighter.
snow1207d-sm.jpg

These are Cypress along the Frio River at Garner St. Pk. in Uvalde Co. Texas, about 15 miles west of me. John Nance Garner was a V.P. under FDR, it was a family ranch given to the state, like Bentsen St. Pk. was from the Lloyd Bentsen family.
garner5a.jpg

This is a Western Kingbird, which is a common breeder in the western half of the U.S., but other than a very few in southern FL and CA it is accidental in winter in the U.S. This is one of the first documented in Texas in winter, taken last Sunday at Sabinal, 20 mi. So. of me.

This is another Wilson's Warbler shot from last weekend, it continues wintering here at my local park up on the Edwards Plateau where accidental.

@dystopian Western Kingbirds have eluded me so far. They're fairly frequent in western Missouri but show up only occasionally here on the eastern side of the state and so far I've never stumbled on one. Eastern kingbirds oth are very common here during the summer. Wilsons warblers are fairly common during their migration but we only have them for a short time on their way up and again for a short time on their way back, never here for long on either trip.
