Wink wrote a pro-Bernie essay that I mostly agree with.
Chris Hedges wrote an anti-Bernie essay that I mostly agree with.
Just like Donald Trump is important, but still mostly a symbol of a larger problem, we shouldn't get hung up on Bernie Sanders.

The answer appears to be "yes".
The left has never been welcome in the Republican party; and since the neoliberal Clinton machine showed up, they have not been welcome in the Democratic party either. As Clinton debauched the historical, FDR/JFK/LBJ meaning of the word "liberal", the left started calling itself "progressives".
My how the world has changed.
It just changes more slowly than we'd like.
