Standing Rock: Rumor Control, Supportive Actions, Obama Confirms Our Low Expectations

Obama's press secretary said yesterday that the president will not do anything to help the water protectors. He wants the pipeline project completed. I'm not surprised, but I am disgusted. Video is less than a minute.
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzRqd3Xic9I]

LaDonna Bravebull Allard, one of the leaders of Sacred Stone Camp, dispelled some rumors yesterday.

1. No the Governor can't stop stop supplies from coming to the camp.
2. No, DAPL is not buying up the hotel rooms at Prairie Knights.
3. No we are not being sprayed with chemicals
4. The[re] has been no little girl [who] died at the camps
5. No we did not kill 30 cows or buffalo with arrows.
6. We did not shoot arrows at planes
7. we did not throw any propene bottle at the police
8. no there are no weapons at camp.
9. No one is getting paid to protest
10. this movement is not outsider[s] coming in it is the people of Native Nation who are standing with our allies.
11. No, Morton County can not raid the camp, this is Federal land under the Army Corp of Engineer and the county police . . . only can care for things in the county . . . the state is under the federal government who control the state government so it would have to be an order from the president and that is not going to happen.
12. No, CPS can not come and take the children from their families.
13. No they can not closed down the school.
Remember we have DAPL employees in the camp to spread these rumors. If you hear anyone us[ing] the speaker saying these things run them out. Don't allow rumors [to] control us we are standing our grounds. We must stand together as defenders of the water.

A short video from the morning of November 30, showing the conditions of some of the roads around the camp, with commentary by Myron Dewey (about 6 mins) and a cameo by a veteran who has been at Oceti Sakowin for a while. If you see any images from ND that don't show snow, they're outdated. [video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2_ckGhkl5k]

This is why the people resist. Indigenous elder Saginaw Grant speaks from his heart (3:30).

Rhonda Lee Grantham’s firsthand report from Oceti Sakowin

thank you to those veterans who have answered the call. I have hope that when these corporate hired hands see you, in the uniform that has given them their own freedom, that they will think twice about who they are "working" for. These water protectors need to stop being treated like disposable brown bodies causing trouble. They need to be known as the brave and spiritually strong people that they are, protecting the water for everyone. That is my prayer.... ❤️

The Shiprock Chapter of the Navajo Nation issued a statement in support of the water protectors on November 22 (caps are in the original document, bold is mine).

We had a powerful meeting last nite at the Shiprock Chapter, we approved resolutions 1-3 with a vote of 121-0-0 and the fourth resolution by a vote of 122-0-0. standing strong with Standing Rock

1. EXPRESSING UNEQUIVOCAL SUPPORT IN THE STRONGEST TERMS FOR THE POSITION OF THE STANDING ROCK SIOUX TRIBE AND THE WATER PROTECTORS IN CANNON BALL, NORTH DAKOTA

2. DEMANDING GOVERNOR OF NORTH DAKOTA JACK DALRMPLE III, THE MORTON COUNTY SHERIFF, THE NORTH DAKOTA STATE POLICE AND ALL OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT TO CEASE AND DESIST IN USING VIOLENT AND MILITARIZED MEANS AGAINST THE STANDING ROCK SIOUX TRIBE AND THEIR SUPPORTERS IN CANNON BALL, NORTH DAKOTA

3. REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO AND OTHER U.S. CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATIONS TO DEMAND THAT THE GOVERNOR OF NORTH DAKOTA JACK DALRMPLE III, THE MORTON COUNTY SHERIFF, THE NORTH DAKOTA STATE POLICE AND ALL OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT TO CEASE AND DESIST IN USING VIOLENT AND MILITARIZED MEANS AGAINST THE STANDING ROCK SIOUX TRIBE AND THEIR SUPPORTERS IN CANNON BALL, NORTH DAKOTA

4. REQUESTING THE NAVAJO NATION COUNCIL, SPEAKER LORENZO BATES, PRESIDENT RUSSELL BEGAY AND VICE PRESIDENT JONATHAN NEZ TO DIVEST ALL NAVAJO NATION FUNDS AND ASSETS FROM THE WELLS FARGO BANK AND ALL OTHER FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS WHO ARE FINANCING THE DAKOTA ACCESS PIPELINE

The US Commission on Civil Rights has issued a statement. Commission Chair Martin R. Castro said:

The issue of the pipeline is not just about the pipeline alone, but rather it is about the entire relationship between the United States and sovereign Indian Nations, their rights, traditions and religious beliefs. As we prepare our civil rights report on this relationship we call on Congress to make it a priority to address the problems in Indian country by holding its own hearings to hear from Native leaders about the unmet needs and unmet promises owed to Native Americans by the United States of America.

Congressional representatives Raul Grijalva and Jared Huffman have asked for congressional hearings on the situation in North Dakota. The statement could be much stronger, but even as weak as it is, only the two of them signed it.

The war zone before the snow: Highway 1806 blockade, which puts the lie to anything that the governor of ND or the Morton County sheriff has to say about their concerns for people's "safety." Because of this blockade, it takes at least 30 minutes longer to get emergency help.

Surprised, but glad to see at least someone is bringing the subject up at the WH press briefings.

I believe it is Chip Reid, CBS. He also asked the following questions at this same briefing. Transcript is here. Search for the word pipeline to go to the spot. It begins halfway down the page or more.

Q Thanks, Josh. On the Dakota pipeline situation, how closely is the President now following this? It really is becoming a bit of a powder keg. There already has been a fair amount of violence and there are some people who believe there could be more with the evacuation order from the governor and now a large group of veterans saying that they are going to go in and act as human shields to protect the protestors. Is the President — there are people calling for the President to get more personally involved, for the administration to get more involved. Will they do that?

Q So has he done anything to be more involved in this than what he said a month ago?

Q He has no plans to get more personally involved at this point?

Edit to add:
This is the full question cut in the video:

Q One of the possibilities that was suggested a month ago was rerouting the pipeline. Where does that stand?

I've seen (I can find the links if needed), that was a clock-runout tactic on Obama's part. Rerouting had already been investigated, and the only other feasible route put the line through (or at least very near) the city of Bismarck. And, those folks had a choice for it on a recent voter referendum. Considering the same dangers exist running it through a big city as exist to run it through the reservation, of course the voters in Bismarck voted it down. The Corp of Engineers proceeded to reroute it on its present route, with no real legitimate approval from ANYONE, and here we all are.

So....city people had a choice but the actual landowners on the reservation get no choice? Oh, boy, let's see if we can guess why that is?

Environmental Impact Statement has been done. I have read that there were multiple requests for very small sections and upgrades and this was interpreted as a runaround of the EIS requirement.

moving it just pushes the risks on someone else's water and land. The water protectors don't want that, and neither do I.

We (the people) don't need this pipeline. Only the investors and the diehard "use the last bit of oil until we're all burning to death" climate-change-deniers want it.

They make up new lies fast, and repeat them in as many venues as possible.

Most of them involve violence by the protestors, usually involving firearms.

Expect a LOT of lies about the Veterans in the next few days.

I'd be shocked to see people lying about veterans outside of stupid comments sections on various and sundry "MSM" discussion forums.

What everyone should be on the lookout for are "veterans" who aren't, really, and are more along the lines of "traitors" (or if you prefer, "agents provocateurs"). That seems more likely than not, even if the proles start slagging veterans.

Since that jaw dropping day it has been abundantly clear that #fuckyouforyourservice is the essential stance of this country and always has been.

I'm basically a #fuckthemilitaryandyourservice* and would cheerfully zero out the defense/intel budget except for salaries, pensions, benefits and VA for your vets & retirees - you take care of the people you made promises to.

* That's every military not just the US, maybe with exceptions for neutral countries like Costa Rica, Ireland (check out Siege of Jadotville on Netflix, it's great!), UN peace keeping activities and the like. You have to remember all militaries commit war crimes in war, they all do their best to cover them up and in the vast majority of cases they succeed. Always. Even UN Peace Keeping. So war, what is it good for? Absolutely Nothing! Say it again!

I remember being told back in late 60s and early 70s to be careful. Freedom of Information Act requests have shown that the FBI and cops infiltrated the civil rights movement, the antiwar movement, the gay rights movement, environmental activism, etc.

Infiltrators were all over Occupy in every city, and they are at Standing Rock right now.

They provide info to the authorities about activities being planned, and they goad people into actions that will provoke retaliation from the cops. They sow seeds of discord and pit allies against each other.

If you know they're there -- even if you don't know who they are -- you can cope better and not lose focus. But it's really difficult. This is why many direct-action groups are small, to minimize the risk of infiltration, but even then it happens.

Down at Zucchotti Park during OWS. They were the ones who told reporters about thefts and fights that never happened to push the meme that OWS were shiftless rabble rousers. I also remember being down there when Fox News went to Zucchotti Park looking for "idiots" to interview. They got DKos alum Ministry of Truth instead. Slam dunk interview for OWS that articulated why we were down there in the first place. Never aired on Fox News. Wonder why?

That interview really shows how good he is on his feet.

There was a lot of talk about him getting a show of his own after OWS, I thought maybe like a Ed Shultz working class perspective thing. But I think he had some personal things to work out at the same time.

His transformation to Dem Party flunky has been one of the more confounding things to have witnessed over the past few years. Went from solider of the 99% to blinded partisan hack (his Twitter feed was pathetic during the election season). I've always thought that he was probably noticed by the party apparatus after this video went viral and sensing a young talent probably offered him some money to take the sharpness of of his criticism of the system by sucking him up into the party machine. I have no evidence of this, just a feeling.

As for infiltrators at OWS, there were many probably. I remember people talking about how the cops were sending released prisoners from Rikers, being just one of the stories.

That said, Occupy was the single most hopeful and inspiring thing I've ever been a part of. Wish I could get to Standing Rock too.

Sad to hear he became just another partisan hack. Still, it was a time in my life where I was connected to a group of people fighting for Things that mattered. It felt good. Which made the end all the more heartbreaking.

to infiltrate groups, usually to provoke violence so the movement is discredited.

Back in the day the WA gov. admitted he'd been approached by the FBI to allow infiltration to provoke violence. He refused, and WA was one of the few states that didn't experience violence during peace protests. But we protesters knew the FBI were in our midst anyway - they were usually taking pictures.

"FBI vs SCA" is a classic story, and if it isn't true, it ought to be. It goes like this: some FBI agents were sent to infiltrate and investigate the Society for Creative Anachronism, either because of its growing "paramilitary" presence (all those stick jocks at tourneys and melees and wars), or to make sure that "Anachronism" wasn't just another way to spell "Anarchism". Most of them went away scratching their heads and writing them off as harmless nuts - but one of them liked it well enough to join officially, and supposedly was King of one or another kingdom (the stories vary as to which one) a time or three. Smile

PS: the SCA is the second-largest paramilitary organization in the world - behind the Boy Scouts. Biggrin

There is no justice. There can be no peace.

Protecting vs threatening... Standing vs attacking... Honoring vs desecrating... Humans vs weapons... Culture vs corporate State... Nature vs greed... Water vs oil...

And so on. The contrast between right and wrong could not be more starkly and clearly evident. It is now being demonstrated, and witnessed in real time by millions of people around the world.

Please be aware · · · (fuck it, just read my sig)

The goal is not about getting the pipeline routed around the concerns of our friends of the first nations. The goal is not about making it safe to pump this shit from here to there.

Of course we must do everything we possibly can do "to help the water protectors.", but that is also not the goal.

If we do not kill the extractive fossil fuels industry we have done nothing. Everything we do needs to serve that goal.

That's why I've been watching what Lockheed is doing regarding fusion power as closely as I have.

Reliable fusion reactors that generate usable power beyond the point of unity are the only way we will end our reliance upon fossil fuels. Wind, solar, and wave energy harvesting don't and can't even come close.
