Open Thread - 08-26-22 - Schwabean Dreams are Made of These

I'm sitting here at my desk, Friday morning, unprepared and wondering what I am going to write about. I had a rough day yesterday mowing, trimming and pulling vines from a chain link fence which is always a great pleasure. If you've ever had to do that then you know about the exquisite jollification of intertwined vines and metal. The grass and all things green just took off with the recent long awaited rains here in east Texas. Today will be another day of mowing, 4 acres worth. It's good seeing green grass again.

Granma.jpgThrough the window I can see that damn squirrel on the bird feeder scarfing down all of the sunflower seeds again. It's a pesky little tree rat, as Fat Freddie would say, or was it Free Wheelin' Franklin? Invoking the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers always calms me. I wonder what those old boys would have to say about current affairs. Oh yeah, it would go something like "Weed will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no weed", or some such. It's that kind of philosophical wisdom that calms me, if you catch my drift.

I usually jump up and run outside and chase that fluffy tailed menace from the feeder, but you know what, it's just trying to survive like everything and everybody Grampa's_Car.jpgelse. So I'm going to take a pass today and leave the squirrel alone. I think that's a sentiment that we'd all like to see more of in our lives. Just leave us alone and let us manage our lives as we seem fit. But you know how those damned power hungry megalomaniac types are. They like to poop in people's boots, just like Fat Freddie's cat.

Speaking of megalomaniacs. Are you all getting as tired of this Klaus Schwab character as much as I am? Just who the hell does he think he is? (See what I did there)? Does he really think he can rule the world? Does he really think he can tamp down human spirit? Good luck with that Dr. Evil.

I wonder what Klaus dreams about at night?

dreams.jpg

I had a dream about him a few nights ago. Klaus was Colonel Klink and all the western leaders were Sgt. Schultz, seeing nothing, hearing nothing, speaking nothing. Just about everybody was a POW. We owned nothing and Klaus was happy. Happy to rent to us what we used to own.

Klaus would march all POWs, in cadence, out to the main yard every morning. After roll call, which as you can only imagine took a very long time, Klaus would read the new word definitions of the day from the Revised Webster's Fluid Dictionary. He explained to us that these new definitions would help us to form our new reality, our new normal, our new world order.

At night we all had to sit in front of the big screen with loud talk. The same talk over and over. Every night. For our own good.

Then one dreary drab day, all days we're drab in Stalag 2030, Colonel Klaus had his aforementioned western leaders roll out a huge cauldron full of a green stinking gooey substance. He said the stalag gardens had quit producing, the soil was no longer fertile, and we, the POWs, had to now eat the ghastly green gruel, and we will like it. That was the last thing I remember.

Having woken suddenly to the sound of a large bug buzzing my head, I slapped it away and turned over onto my back and gazed at the ceiling, my mind wandering back to the dream that I had just ejected myself from. It then occurred to me that maybe Klaus has bitten off a little more than he can chew with this Great Reset thing. His dream may not come true, not in totality anyway.

Klaus' nightmare is waking people from their dreams. Most of the world is rejecting his vision. They are working together to form their own reality.

Klaus and his WEF seem to have a firm grip on the West though, The Five Eyes in particular. His monied class has brought the West to its knees and they wish to start the scheme over from scratch, leaving those that caused the mess to sit atop the heap, free from any responsibility, to lord over us forever. It's a good job if you can get it. Personally, I perish the thought.

Perhaps the target was the West all along. To combine the wealth and power into a EU like federation to counteract the growing power of the brics countries. A New Partial World Order. Which, IMHO, will go the way of all past megalomaniacal empires, to the dustbin of history.

My advice to Klaus is don't underestimate human spirit. Keep your dreams to yourself and leave us alone.

Glad you've gotten some rain and the grass is greening. Mowing is a justified price IMO.

“It was just too disturbing for most people, too weird.” | Robert Crumb
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2ZWrWmypA0]
From Fritz the Cat to Mr. Natural – meet the cult cartoonist Robert Crumb, whose artistic world is full of anti-heroes and demons from modern America and his subconscious. In this rare interview, Crumb talks frankly about refusing to adhere to political correctness, and about his never-ending urge to unravel the layers of delusion in the world – as he says: “I’m still digging.”

Seems to me the Great Reset is endangered by BRICS+. Russell Brand does a great impression of Klaus as Dr. Evil from Austin Powers.

Good luck with the yard work. We managed to squirrel proof our feeders by hanging them on a cable strung between two trees, but it wasn't bear proof. The bears would just tear it down and eat the seed. As you say everyone has to make a living.

Thanks for the OT, and I hope the great reset dreams fade as I hope the attempted reset fails. All the best!

I had to walk by a head shop on my way to and from high school back in the late 60s. I stopped in almost every day to see what new underground comics had been released. I had a huge collection until I let a buddy borrow most of them. His mom found them, chastised him, and then threw them away. I still have a few tucked away somewhere though.

I sit here procrastinating the 4 acres I have to mow today. Zero turns are a great invention, makes the chore faster and more enjoyable. That helps. The 4 acres usually takes about 3 and a half hours to mow.

Have a good one!

Vaughn Bode art in the fire, and I truly miss it. He was another of the great underground artitsts of the early 70s, and made getting National Lampoon and various men's mags worth it for the occasional Cheech Wizard, Deadbone, or Junkwaffel. I had a hardbound collection of each, and I don't feel like laying out the coin to replace them.

My favorite Junkwaffel strip, which I think is accurate when describing my job even today:

The framed version of that (cut out of a Hustler magazine, I think) sold for ~$5K last year...

would make quick work of 4 Acres. But buddy it is four bladed and loud. I have to wear ear protection, but mowing can kinda be a zen thing like raking sand...back and forth, back and forth.

Good luck with your project.

I did too. Fat Freddie's cat made me think of him just cause they were both in the zap comics., but that strip was created by Gilbert Shelton.

All the best.

Got to put more poison in my yard. I hate squirrels. Two years ago, one crawled into my car and chewed up the wiring. $1000.00 repair job. Now have capsaicin tape under the hood. Next, they crawled in my attic and chewed the wiring in the wall. I HATE SQUIRRELS!

every time I see them on the feeder it reminds me of the monied class feeding off of the working class. I wish the monied class were as easy to chase away as the squirrel. But, just like the squirrel they keep coming back. The bastids.

Thanks Enchantress.

Hi all, Hey JtC! Hope all are well!

Zap comix was the bomb when I was teen, in socal. Someone always had an older brother that would get them for us. Mr. Natural, the Furry Freak Bros., Suzy Creamcheese, Fritz, and so on... Robert Crumb was revered. There was another one, small format 'adult' comic book I can't recall the name of that had some of it as well. Could not believe it when I got old enough to buy a Zap myself.

I don't know what is worse, squirrels or schwabs. But I tend to lean schwabs as their bad behavior is learned and evil of choice, rather than more instinctive and innate.

Squirrels are major predators of bird nests, eating both eggs and young all summer. Like racoons, they raid every nest they can find and get to. Eggs, babies doesn't matter. I have watched a squirrel take nearly fledged baby Eastern Bluebird out of the natural hole in the tree when they were a day or two at most from fledging. Big babies.

Using clothesline strung between two high points one can often then have the feeder far enough from a tree that they can't jump or get to it, but you will be surprised. There are various electric feeders with deterrents. A neighbor has one that give a shock when the weight on it is over a level that exceeds birds, another goes into spin cycle mode, also weight triggered, both of which eject said squirrel. The sheppard's hook type setup is also popular. Another method is to use something like a bucket or garbage can lid, above the feeder on the hanger which then vermin falls off of and can't get around. Tie a knot or make a stop some other way, thread the hanger through a hole in center of 'lid' so it is loose and falls to sides when weight on it. Not that I know anything about this kind of stuff.

On another subject... I would bet TEN dollars to a ten year old jelly filled donut that there is not one of you here thinking 'I really need to hear that song again'. I certainly wasn't. Last time I played it, was probably '... to Gilligan's Island'. But a friend sent this and I was wrong, I did need to hear it again. This is the most spectacular single person single take no dubs version of this song ever. It shows what a spectacular piece of music it was. It had to bring tears to Page's eyes. It did mine. The depth of sound from a piano is not fair, said the guitar player. This young lady knocks it out of the park and over the moon.

gotta fly friends,

Have great days y'alls!

Good morning to all! I would agree that was a pretty bad dream you had. Made mine seem tame in comparison but it did give me a rude awakening this morning.

Squirrels are and can be a pest. Have had both wiring issues in our truck and roof of place in Texas. Mothballs helped some but the smell through the air vents in the truck made us take them out when driving!

Stairway to Heaven….what memories that brought back! When was still teaching, the school offered for a few semesters a guitar class and invariably the kids in the class would come to my room to play me something they had just learned….you got it Stairway to Heaven.

My hopes are with BRICs and more and mor people realizing what is happening to them by those who are supposed to be leading us.

Have a good day and weekend. Off on a walk with a group from one of the senior living centers. Is an interesting walk as a support person. Just listen to their stories and enjoy the river.

compadre.
Bushy tailed tree rats used to be a huge bother here, but not much anymore. We have a platform feeder located where it is hard to jump to, up on a pole with a collar they can't get past. We also have a few wire mesh balls of peanuts they cannot open which are suspended from contrivances that drive them mad; from a tree branch or protrusion off a patio cover (or anything else), suspend a length of spring connected to a ring shaped lamp finial screwed onto a length of lampmaker's all-thread which is double nutted both above and below a piece of sheet metal folded to 90 degrees, point upward, with a hole in the center for said all-thread. Another ring shaped finial, a short bit of spring and then the chain mount for the feeder ball. most of the time they get free flying lessons, but now and then, after much struggle and many attempts they get to the feeder, which they cannot open. There are some suet feeders hung from similar contraptions using purchased ready made plastic down-curved disks instead of the sheet metal.

That is actually but part of the solution, and maybe wouldn't suffice by itself, I seem to recall that I still used to have problems. The real solution is a 4 foot tall glazed pottery quasi-replica of a greek amphora (unclimbable) atop which, on a small platform, I place a daily ration of in-shell raw peanuts for a pair of California Scrub Jays. A squirrel is no match for a single scrubbie, let alone a pair. One relatively mizzable winter I took pity on the tree rat and put out some dried corn on the cob wired to the fence so it couldn't carry it off. One day congratulating myself on the quantity of food I was charitably providing my fellow mammal I wandered out and found the Squawk eating the corn.
Since the squawks took possession of our yard, squirrel problems have been minimal, plus, the songbirds have proliferated causing periodic visits from sharp shinned and coopers hawks which seem to scare the piss out of brother tree rat, who rarely cames around any more.

https://thehill.com/policy/finance/3616777-why-the-fed-chief-says-theres...

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Friday the central bank will lean into interest rates meant to restrict the economy until inflation steadily declines.

Speaking at the Fed’s annual policy summit in Jackson, Wyo., the Fed chief said the bank will keep taking “forceful and rapid” steps to curb price growth even though it could cause higher unemployment and a recession.

“While higher interest rates, slower growth and softer labor market conditions will bring down inflation, they will also bring some pain to households and businesses,” Powell said Friday.

“These are the unfortunate costs of reducing inflation. But a failure to restore price stability would mean far greater pain,” he continued.

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/cost-of-uk-s-winter-triples-as-energy-price-...

(Bloomberg) -- UK households will pay almost triple the price to heat their homes this winter compared with a year ago, a jarring increase for millions of people already struggling to afford everyday essentials.

Industry regulator Ofgem raised its cap on domestic energy bills to a record £3,549 ($4,189) beginning Oct. 1. That amount is expected to go even higher in January as the UK competes with other nations for limited gas supplies.

“Come October, low-income households will simply not turn on their heating,” said Peter Smith, director of policy and advocacy for the National Energy Action charity. “An increase of this much cannot be budgeted for by households with no wiggle room.”

The higher cap, which was in line with analyst estimates, escalates the economic pressures on Britons paying increasingly more for everything from food to furniture. UK inflation hit a 40-year high last month, and Citigroup Inc. said it could surge past 18% in January.

The elites will carry on as usual and the peons will pay the price.
