This is so exciting!

Good people are drifting in -- let's bring the memberlist to 10,000 soon!

At some point we'll want our own alternate "Netroots Nation" -- I haven't been to one before, since at some point before each of the NN events I decided that I really didn't want to see any of Markos' neoliberal hires. How about a "NN" of our own dedicated to the political revolution rather than to the preservation of the Democratic Party?

What we really need here are people like FishOutofWater (isn't he a Clinton supporter? That's why I said "like") to do the climate change science updates. I'm going to have a climate change paper published in a journal called "Knowledge Cultures" soon.

Do we know people in the opt-out movement?

Maybe we could get people from Orchestrated Pulse to come here? Or Breaking Brown?

Or how about Bobbosphere? I tried to get Bobbosphere's diaries rec'd up when I was over at Orange.

Do you think we could get reportage on legal pot around here? Or Fight for 15?

Can we get updated commentary on who's running for office, and of which party they're running in? I mean, if they hate the idea at New York Magazine, there must be something to it.

I gather nobody here is going back to Orange with its toxic ownership just because they can find Article X or whatever. And Orange will adjust accordingly. Omigod teacherken told us about a MUST-READ opinion piece by Charles M. Blow in the WaPo!

Some thoughts.

I am an American, and seem to spend some time recruiting Canadian FB acquaintances who seem of like mind and have skills. I have invited some at least to check this site out, because we are such nice people! Wink

I have some contact with some regional protest groups, some about stopping new gas lines and storage, and will invite them in as well. Again, different skills. I may be a better promulgator than a true activist. We all do what we can, plus a bit more.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

At least when TK does that he's promoting someone besides himself. I'm surprised he hasn't copyrighted his username.

How about we scrub any references to TOP. Have a NN but call it ?. Like kossacks for sanders at reddit. I wish they'd change the name to something else. We shouldn't give TOP and it's weasel owner any publicity good or bad. These sites will stand on their own merits. I can see more and more of the Bernie folks gravitating here from top just because that place is not where true progressives should be. It's a surrogate of the DNC. And if they don't leave then they weren't meant for this site anyhow. I mean, I can't even stand going there anymore. It's as alien, if not more so, than redstate. Having said this, I just sent this wonderful place $50. Sorry Bernie, I'll make it up to you before California...

I joined TOP back in Sept. of 04 and after all of those years I never felt comfortable there. If you wrote a comment you felt like you had to get it proof read by a PHD in English before posting or the grammar police would be up your ass. If someone mentioned Native American, Black, Asian or any other race or ethnicity, invariably some asshole would try to twist it and call the poster racist. I guess as we grow here we'll run into all kinds of quirky people but I hope the irritating assholes that just want to stir shit stay away.

So I started to write less commas in my sentences, but I am always scared that my sentences without the commas are completely incomprehensible, because I often can't figure out your guy's long sentences that have almost no commas in it. I think I tend to write the commas on places where a translated to German version of my comment would have commas. Consider my commas being germlish, helping me more than you. Smile

My rule with commas, if a sentence is collecting a number of them, is to see if there are any that can be left out without making it harder to read, or without introducing ambiguities. Basically do these clauses need to be separated in order to keep the meaning clear? Also I use them to break up long sentences sometimes, in a slightly different way.

I don't bother with them for short comments, because if I were accurately writing a summary, the subject would often be "progdog's drivel". When subject line is immediately repeated in the comment, it is a result of the subject being left blank.

Long story short: I'm too lazy to write one subject line, let alone intentionally repeat myself with it.

I don't worry about subject/text. I just start typing in the Subject box and if it gets too long, I tab to the "main" text box.

One minor annoyance with c99p: The HTML is set up so that when you tab from the Subject box, you don't jump to the text box, you jump to the "insert image" icon immediately below the word "Comment".

That using subject lines as such isn't mandatory, they are more of an option when you want to emphasize something a bit, draw attention in some way, or draw someone's attention. It's just how the software is designed in places that publish comment lists with only the subject lines, as a form of abbreviation.

You appear to be talking about what happens when people leave the subject line blank. I didn't know the software allowed that here. I am not used to blog comment software that includes subject lines, and also does anything other than say "Nope" when you leave them blank.

If the intent is clear, it's best to leave the person alone, even if the error makes you cringe. I would argue that this goes for usage as well. There are times I want to say "that word does not mean what you think it does" but refrain if the intent was clear. Nobody asked me to be their writing instructor.

Also it's easier than one might think to misread a person's intent. Sometimes what appears to be inadvertant incorrect usage is actually a stylistic quirk.

As far as bad links go, if you have enough time to post a comment saying "your link is broken," perhaps you have enough time to do a quick search and find and post the correct link.

Is some sort of information about where you're sitting financially... Is there a monthly goal? I'm on a fixed income and dropping every penny I can to Bernie and Berniecrats. I know hosting plans can range from $9/mo to $140/mo and I'm guessing you're probably on a high-end shared plan right now but you'll need to scale into a cloud plan. And for all I know, there may be other costs.

Anyway, I'm willing to help but it'd be nice to get a feel for the size of the problem. I don't need a financial report but one of those thermometer thingamabobs would be pretty cool

but why do we need details? I chip in a small amount each month and knowing more wouldn't change that. Now if things weren't quite so tight on my end it would be a bit more - but that is my problem.

There are various levels at play here. JtC's first aim I would guess would be to cover costs. Level two should be to make something for his time and level three should be to provide a full time income. I don't think anyone would begrudge that. My point is that I doubt very much whether he is making a reasonable living yet so there is absolutely no reason for anyone not to contribute a little if they can afford it.

whatever folks can afford. No one should feel pressure to donate if funds are tight.

We are already on a mid-level VPS (dedicated cloud plan) and already seeing signs of stressing this server at times. We left shared servers long ago, they couldn't handle the traffic. A couple of thousand more members and we may be looking beyond VPS, and with 10,000 members we'll be looking beyond dedicated server plans that webhosts have to offer, in other words mega bucks per month.

I hire a dev team to do much of the work which is pretty expensive. For example the replies notification program we just implemented cost 480.00 dollars just for that little feature. Reputable developers don't come cheap. We have lots of other work that needs to be done, improvements and updates/upgrades etc.

This site started out as a part time hobby and has grown into a full time job in the last couple of months. I am not retired and run a business besides taking care of this place and my business has suffered because of it. I have monthly bills to pay just like everyone else. I would love to make this site my full time job but we are not even close to generating enough funds to cover that and surely you wouldn't suggest that someone ride this tiger full time 7 days a week for nothing, right. If donations can't cover the costs of running this site then we're looking at advertisement, and no one would like to see that including myself. As I said I hate advertising.

Just to give you some insight. I built this site about a year and a half ago, for nothing. That alone would have easily cost $4,000.00 to $5,000.00. I administered and maintained the site for well over a year with no payment at all. What do we do if we reach 10,000 members, where will the money come from to cover that? I'm hoping that donations will still cover it.

The bottom line is: If you like this place and can afford it, donate some money to keep it online. If you can't afford it, that's cool, there's no pressure on anyone to do so.

If you want to have the right to comment and post diaries here, you should pay something for that right. There is nothing wrong to pay for a newspaper in print, I don't see what is wrong with paying something for having the privilege to write something to or on an online site like this one.

I don't like ads and I don't like "philantrophic rich folks" donating lots of money, if we don't know, who they are. Absolute transparency for donations from a certain amount on up should be a given. You don't want to become dependent on rich, nice people, who we don't know about. So, people who donate above a certain amount and that may be regularly, should be listed for us to know about them.

No one should feel pressure to donate if funds are tight.

Of course that makes sense on first glance, but then I think people should feel some pressure to pay something on a recurring basis, if they want to comment here on a recurring basis. It's just a matter of how much one can afford and is willing to pay for "commenting rights" so to speak. Imo, commenting rights are a privilege to have, because we all know that comments are what people turn to love a place or to hate it. To pay a little for the right to eventually go on people's nerves with comments you can't stand and don't like is imo a good thing. It may also make it easier to keep "the not so benign commentators tamed a bit".

So far you have 1600 plus members. It will take a while til you reach the 10000 member level, right? So, it would be nice, if we knew how much money is needed per month for a membership level of say 2000 people. If we knew, then we could see for ourselves what should be donated to keep the site running and improving. I think it is not helpful to act coply (I hope these are acceptable words to use for what I want to say - my dictionary gave those to me) with stating clearly what amount of money is needed.

I know you don't like me saying it. I will shut up about it now. I think I said it on three different threads. If it really is so much money that 2000 members can't afford to donate a monthly amount to cover the costs, then one needs to think about something else, not before that.

Compare it to this: If you buy a house, you would like to know what the recurring fixed costs of the house will be to maintain your livelihood in there, before you decide to buy it, right?

Do you need $ 4000.00 per month? That would be $ 2.00 per month per registered user. Do you need $8000.00 per month? That would be $ 4.00 per month for for 2000 registered users.

You need to hire people to code some upgrades you think are necessary? Let people know how much it costs and go from there. Just let the users know. (And btw. not all users think that all upgrades some people want to see are essential. At TOP the so-called upgrades had somewhat opposite effects)

If people can't afford a monthly recurring fee for the privilege to comment here, then they still can read and click here. I don't see any problem in that. If nobody would register because he had to pay a little bit on a monthly basis, then you can may be think of ads. But I wouldn't give in to that as the only solution to the problem.

Interesting comment here about fantasies, actually. Very interesting. Because these third parties are so blank, people can project onto them, I guess, so there is a lot of wish-fulfillment. I mean, the Democratic Party platform is great too, but the actual Party… well… not impressed at this point. And yet a party made of ambitious people trying to gut the limelight is supposed to then be impervious to corruption? That's just strange. I think they need to start from the ground up too. Pretending there is an equivalence with Stein, who has basically no governmental experience, and Sanders, who has run at nearly every level of government over thirty years and knows the system from the inside out, is frankly embarrassing.

It would require a lot of wish fulfillment, which is what you are smartly pointing out.

It will be interesting to see where that subthread goes after the convention, because we must assume Sanders isn't likely to be the nominee unless he scores massive wins in several of the delegate-rich contests coming up, especially California. Or if a suggestion for indictment of Clinton emerges from Comey for the server or her actions as SoS and arms deals and donations to the Clinton Foundation. I went over to kossacks for sanders and searched Jill Stein. 3 or 4 diaries came up, a couple of them discussing Bernie running as a Green. Pretty decent discussion, lots of comments nothing very combative. Mawn-jilla, who I think started the site? had a couple of comments and is against Bernie running as a green. But in no way was her/his comments anywhere near what you'd see at top for the same thing. The authors of these diaries still have accounts and are still commenting...

I don't want to post another long quote from that thread, but I will tell you I am banned, and was threatened with being reported to the mods, for the position I took. People can click the link themselves and read it.

I'll take your word for it. Thanks!

The night I got bojo'd from TOP, /r/Kossacks_For_Sanders dumped me, too.

No reasoning why - no messages, nothing. My opinion is that they have one specific mod over there that is overly ban-happy, never seemed to be happy that I was a mod, and has the ear of the person that started the subreddit. If I had to guess, the Jill Stein bannings are sourced from the same two people in tandem.

It's a weird deal, and it's gone in a weird direction. They should leave the Bernie-promotion to the main /r/SandersForPresident, and let the former TOPers have a place to keep in touch and talk about what they want. That was the original purpose, but then the person who started the sub had grand ideas of creating another big Bernie-supporting subreddit, when there already was a huge one.

Whole thing is odd. I had not spoken about this since it happened, but have been getting PMs on reddit as to why I don't participate there anymore. That's why!

Thanks again, all, for being so welcoming here. It's appreciated!

and migrated right over. I had no idea that purity had become important there, but I was uncomfortable that the name was damn targeted. And also funneling. TY, won't visit again. I got a reddit account, now I can say I have one.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

I have no interest in being labeled a "Kossack" ever again. I wasn't particularly happy with it when I was one!

Logged on one day to find a message that I was banned...no reason, no warning. Asked around, all I heard was that "there was no transgression'. Just my time, I guess.

Power trippers unite! You have nothing to lose but your positions. Seen a couple of em nosing around here...makes me nervous.

when a group of us first discussed creating a site, we all agreed that we wanted our main focus to be on issues and policies from a left perspective, beyond party politics. Speaking for myself, limiting us to just one party would end up limiting our conversations and ideas.

This isn't about party. This is about people, principle, morality, and humanity. When we started this place, we wanted it to be everything dailykos isn't: Respectful, intellectual, curious, civil, and open. Nobody puts baby in a corner, gg - nobody. Smile

Beware the bullshit factories.

Putting Sean Shealy in the crapper for not being partisan enough to meet the norms of dailykos is the spotlight on the total DNC wasteland dkos has become. It is an incestuous community of like minded DNC tools and shills that enjoys punishing one another and any stray newcomers who dare to break their narrowly prescribed conventions. And worst of all, it is marketed as the "biggest liberal blog" when it should be a study in Psychology Today.

I am ready for the revolution that Bernie sold and is walking away from. I am not interested in any new organizations. I want war on blue and red. I want Bernie to pledge #BernieOrBust. I want him to join with Jill Stein and run Green if he loses the nomination for the Democratic Party. Sanders/Stein 2016 She is willing to be VP and is offering him her Third Party to run in. Bernie has name recognition and huge public support. If he folds up his tent with some new group, I am not going to be happy. We've been losing and regrouping (more and better) for 12 years. Not again. Now is the time to go for broke.

This audio interview elaborates on optiions available to Bernie and us. I found it interesting, and I am giving you the link to the web page so you can listen to it or yourself.

Disclosure: I don't know what Bernie is proposing if he loses. I just knew he wasn't throwing down the gauntlet and that is what I want. I've been sick and in hospital with acute brochitis, and I haven't cared enough to explore anything else.

I want us to find a group of smart, sincere, good and honest humanist people with the best chance to burn both political parties to the ground NOW and merge with them towards accomplishing that goal.

Here is to a speedy recovery.

We definitely need something new to take root.

I find it ironic that the poople (made a mistake in spelling, but now like the word) who accuse the 'outsiders' of ruining their parties apparently have no recognition of the dwindling party membership caused by the 'insiders.'

Bronchitis can be a bitch.

I'm all for building this blog and when SS comes through, I'll throw a few bucks this way.

I do think that it would be a good thing to help the Greens get on the ballot on as many states as possible so we can have a viable option there. Even if my motives are selfish [for Bernie] it wouldn't hurt the Greens. It would be a win-win proposition.

Take care of yourself.

Life is strong. I'm weak, but Life is strong.

Mark from Queens's picture

This fascinating season has produced a very unique opportunity that we haven't seen in such a long time, if ever.
The first time I can recall a very real scenario in which we can deal mortal blows to the two-party stranglehold by out of touch corporate parties completely beholden to Wall St, chronic dysfunction and a Revolving Door in DC.

With Hills there is transparently business as usual, which is deeply problematic to a populatuon currently undergoing a mass insurrection against a rigged system. And Trump is a complete reality show addled, buffoon vulture capitalist businessman of the most vile proportions.

The scenario couldn't be more picture perfect, right now, for progressive Liberalism to take over and flourish as the voice of the 99% forced for generations to toil in the deeply oppressive, inhumane and unsympathetic conditions of unbridled capitalism.

Bernie must seize the moment. We must power him to do so. Now!

Get better friend, we'll need you. Had bronchial pneumonia recently myself, wasn't fun. Now my asthma is back worse than ever.
