If this was your daughter...

photo Corey_zpsz6dnyzqu.jpgPhotographer Meg Bitton has taken a stand against NC HB2 by sharing a picture of one of her models, transgender 14-year old Corey Maison.

She adds the question:

If the girl in the photo above was your daughter, would you feel comfortable sending her into a men’s bathroom?

Bitton had permission of Corey's parents to do this. It took a few edits to get her final post to Facebook:

If this was YOUR daughter, would you be comfortable sending her into a men's bathroom? Neither would I. Corey Maison is transgender. She was born with male anatomy but identifies as a female. Under the new laws, SHE would be forced to use the men's room. Therefore, I would not be comfortable sending HER into the men's room if she was my daughter. Be fair. Be kind. Be empathetic. Treat others how you would like to be treated.

Corey helped with her make up AND I edited the image FOR her, the way SHE would like it. Not for me and certainly not for any of you.

The post has gotten 54K likes, 30,837 shares and 12K comments.

After receiving many positive posts, but also a whole lot of trolling, Bitton posted

It is impossible to moderate this post, try as we may. I want to delete it as badly as I don't want to delete it. I decided to let Corey's mother make that call and she asked for it to stay to raise awareness so it will. PLEASE BE ASSURED that I do not in anyway support the trolling insanity I am seeing here and I VERY MUCH appreciate all the positivity around Corey as does she AND her family.

--Bitton

Corey asks as well:

I will be myself no matter how many people try and hold me back. I am strong, determined, and BRAVE. Try walking a day in my shoes then you can tell me you understand.

--Corey

Of course, then Corey will have no shoes, but at least you will be a mile away from her.

Standing up for yourself takes guts, standing up for others takes determination, and standing against overwhelming amounts of ignorance takes strength. Corey certainly seems to have all three, and some awesome parents.

that they are incapable of thinking properly. I do hope that this image would break through their nasty stereotypes and get them to see the real issues with real people. Well done, everyone. What a brave little kid. Best wishes to you and to all the Coreys of the world.

Nothing exciting happens there. We all go into stalls and close the door and then wash our hands and leave. And maybe check our makeup. Period.

Life is strong. I'm weak, but Life is strong.

what transgender person, in the middle of transitioning say, would want to use a urinal in front of everyone, EVER? Or would use an open stall with their anatomy, that they are working to change, hanging out for all to see? And same goes for a female transitioning to a male - like she's gonna try to squat on a urinal instead of using a toilet in a stall? Ludicrous.

I am not very good maybe at putting this, but that just defies the logic of how any teenage or school age child who is already sensitive about their appearance would act! There are stalls in those bathrooms people, have they never been inside one? I believe even Men's rooms have stall doors for God's sake.

And I do get it's not really about the bathrooms, but that just shows that in this dumbed down place we call a country, there are people that think it really IS all about the bathrooms, and act like it is when they know damned well it is nothing of the kind.

on social media to make a political statement. If your daughter would have done such post on her own without your help, it would be something else.

The photographer who used the girl as model makes a profit out of his post. If the real mother to a real daughter would do that, I would say the mother abuses her daughter. If a real daughter of some real mother would post herself on social media, I would give my daughter an advice, but would not support it and not prevent her from doing what the daughter wants.

Corey seems to be an active agent/participant in this situation. I have known some 10 year olds quite competent to take this sort of action.

Corey is growing up to be a very confident person. While RWNJs will use a host of other adjectives, and will fight to stifle this conversation, we must provide support for those that feel the need to speak and act out. Without this we only diminish ourselves and limit our options. I keep hoping I live long enough to out-live those that can't get into the 21st

A bright note: Corey, and several others I know are very public and will not be stifled by the true life trolls that continue to live among us.

Of course I wouldn't want her in the men's bathroom. Netiher would I want my 14-y-o portrayed as a sexualized child. The irony is profound here. Who are the sexual predators??? Certainly not transgender children or adults.

No child is capable of making these kind of decisions. And he is a male and always will be. As an adult he could make the decision to be bold and gender non-conforming, this should not be foisted on a child. The trans community needs to quit hiding behind lesbians and little kids.

While I don't think any child should be forced to do anything of that nature I don't think that is the case here.

And I do think even at a very young age many trans people realize or develop the feeling that they are not the correct physical gender for their biological body.

Granted, my views are based on the limited info I have to work with, only knowing one friend at that age that matched this criteria but she (now) is quite vocal about the point that she wishes she could have been open about it then.

If you have never had to do it, you might never understand, but having to hide who you truly are all the time to everyone can be physically and emotionally taxing, much more so than dealing with the negative repercussions now that we are just a bit more enlightened and I think that is why we see more young people being open about who they really feel they are.

Sure, it's gonna cause them drama and a lot of shit, but for many that is easier to deal with than living a false life.

transition apparently goes better if started before puberty ... which is a problem, if one believes the decision cannot properly be made before puberty.

This isn't so much the case on a psychological basis as it is on a physiological one. Yet, these kids know damn good and well that they're trans by the time the process of puberty begins.

Leelah Alcorn certainly knew it well enough to express it; yet when her parents expressed this "he'll always be male" nonsense (yes, nonsense) and made it stick, she walked out in front of an 18-wheeler one night and died instantly. A total waste of many lovely talents and a beautiful heart and mind, for the sake of conformance. You want child abuse, there's your child abuse.

"When I was 14, I learned what transgender meant and cried of happiness. After 10 years of confusion I finally understood who I was. I immediately told my mom, and she reacted extremely negatively, telling me that it was a phase, that I would never truly be a girl, that God doesn't make mistakes, that I am wrong. If you are reading this, parents, please don't tell this to your kids. Even if you are Christian or are against transgender people don't ever say that to someone, especially your kid. That won't do anything but make them hate them self. That's exactly what it did to me."
— Leelah Alcorn, 2014

I am certain that there are male/female parents that have taken their child to the Doctors because their girl child always acted like and kept saying that she was a boy or their boy child always acted like and said they were a girl. I know this is true because the Doctors collect and publish data and information on these visits.
If a lesbian couple or parent was pushing their boy child to be a girl or girl child to be a boy then YES that would be child abuse, that would be clearly a crime for the harm done to the child. And would most likely soon be discovered.
I didn't see any evidence either way in the essay or links, so you may have jumped the gun don'tcha think now, ya know, betcha maybe eh?
I'm glad Robyn posts Essays here. I know that there are humans born with extra parts, tails even! They are still human and should have the same basic human rights that we all have. Mom told me once that people with both sex parts never have to fuck themselves because the whole wide world was gonna fuck them all the time, all their lives.
I understand that trans-gender is different than that and I know that Doctors consider it a human reality and not a delusion. Enough so that sexual reassignment surgeries are allowed to occur. So, there must be more to it than crazy lesbians abusing children doncha think now, ya know, ya betcha maybe for sure eh?
BUT
I'm a little disappointed because the essay with the pic of a pretty person got double the normal replies so far.
I'm not disappointed with the author.

Edit/postscript: Totally agree with opposing that whole making kids look sexy thing in the media. And those pageants. WTF is wrong with people? Putting makeup on a 10 year old with the purpose of making her look sexier, as a job? WTF?

This!

The child depicted is fourteen years of age, the same age as girls tend to start using makeup regularly anyway. And, as Robyn reminds us from time to time, transwomen ARE WOMEN.

I don't get it.

Bathroom bills are a bad idea. Nobody will benefit from them except people who are invested in enforcing gender scripting, meaning specific presentations assigned to each biological sex. I swear, the more I read about this, the more I think sex-segregated men's bathrooms should all be made unisex on the grounds that they are currently unsafe spaces. Install tampon machines and put up signs saying "if you see someone who looks female, leave them alone." The bathroom arguments almost always seem to just take it for granted that men's bathrooms are places where people are at risk for being beaten up and that there isn't anything anybody can do about that. I say we invade.

It just looks almost identical to many of the photo's my niece takes. A young lady of 14 herself that I am incredibly proud of both for her abilities (She is an amazing student of dance) and for her complete humbleness of personality despite her talents and appearance.

I don't see anything more than a photo of an attractive young woman being herself and nothing she, or the photographer should be ashamed of.

I just don't know where you get the sexualization from. It's not like it's a provocative pose or inappropriate garments or whatnot.

Maybe I am missing something?
