Saturday Open Thread - 9/27/25: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people! Hope y'all had a good week and plans for a good weekend!

A major offensive took place yesterday in the Ant War. I finally got an exterminator to crawl under the house and spray their magic ant killer. Not sure how long it will be to see the end to them, but for now, I will leave the Red Neck partial solution to the problem---duct tape over the electrical outlet at the kitchen counter---right in place.

And the little kitten that had been hanging around the office, hissing at my assistant, but sucking up to me, disappeared this week. Last time I saw him was last Friday morning. On last Wednesday, we started noticing the smell of a dead critter underneath my office back porch. We had 3 guys try to locate it, and did get a product called Rat Sorb, and will hope for the best that it will eliminate the odor. I can't verify if it was that little stray or not. I did discover an elderly lady who lives a block from my office has 38 cats. Running loose. Of course, I can't rule out this:

An elderly man drove up, came in, started bitching at me about how after 6 months, I hadn't done his deeds and set up his estate so his son gets everything. He was upset. I had never seen him, my assistant had never seen him, and he said he did his consultation there, received "lists" of attorneys and info we do not have. He even stood where he said he had stood during his visit. We seat clients. I told him at least 5 times he went to the attorney across town, not me. That attorney moved his office without notifying his clients. He finally asked me if I wanted him to leave, and I said, "I insist that you do so. Now." He looked to be late 70s, maybe in his 80s, and very angry and could have become violent. If I had his son's number, I would have called him to get this man some help. Maybe we could all become old folks living in a fuzzy reality. Time gets away from us all.

At least I ate delicious tacos last night!

Well, we got us an impending WWIII, an economic crash looming, inflation making it harder to maintain our standard of living, and the sense we may declare martial law and suspend elections...but they can't take away our joy of nature, music, friendship, reading, family...at least not yet. We mustn't allow them, somehow, someway, friends.

This is an open thread. Share whatever you have happened upon that you wish to share with us, your friends.

Let 'er rip!

@QMS We have added a lovely 2 ft. strip of duct tape on the wall where the ants were coming in under the facing. I think of it as art deco. Our kitchen is really personalized. I want to re-caulk at the sink about 6 inches, and then call it good.
Well, Dear One dosed with chemo for 7 days. Last week, no chemo. My observation is that chemo will kick one's ass. Still, last week was, in some respects, his best of the past year.
Have a wonderful weekend, dear friend!

I remembered that I had read Leiningen and the Ants, a short story, in grade school. I probably thought of this every time we had an infestation at the house. The fire ants were particularly bad for Ms. So, who had an unusually bad reaction to their bites.

Also vaguely recalled a movie based based upon the short story and looked for it. Found this trailer with Charlton Heston and Eleanor Parker which made me laugh out loud:

Heston seems to relish the role of white man dominates the savages and his mail order bride.

Thanks for the Odds & Ends, OtC!

@soryang I saw that movie when I was a kid! And guess what? Dear One has it on a disc, and we are gonna watch Heston try to dominate his mail order bride AND the deadliest ants in the history of cinema!
I haven't had a chance to skim today's headlines beyond Trump taking away the Colombian President's veto.
(I had to interrupt my reply for 10 minutes to watch a huge hawk on the ground, hunting for a mouse or mole. He was 30 ft. away, right in clear view. Huge guy!)
What plans are you making for the hurricane, or is it still coming your way? I wish you luck, friend!

OTC, just learned what this was recently, it's making forecasts of the storm, potential TS 9, approaching the US southeast coast more difficult (when two storms are close together). The report we saw this am on mr. weatherman suggested we might miss the main impact of this TS in our area maybe Monday when it passes. He gave a warning area starting from the FL-GA border, north to Cape Hatteras. We're hoping that holds up. Wish the people northward luck. Daughter called last night wanting us to evacuate to her place but there is a possibility it may only generate 30-40mph winds here, without much rain accumulation. We'll have to somehow secure all Ms. So's potted plants/orchids on the patio.

We don't have our small gas burner to cook with in case the power goes out, because the apartment lease doesn't allow it. So we have pb+j, fruit, snacks, etc. Lots of bottled water. We could eat kimchi and cold rice, in that event for a little while. I hope all of our former neighbors get thru this alright after fixing their homes.

Hope all is tranquil at your place. We had a resident hawk in our backyard regularly. The mockingbirds and crows if they were around would try to scare it off. Miss the big cranes that would come around sometimes snake hunting, and the regular curlews. They would get annoyed if I interrupted their search for food.

주말은 잘 지내세요 Have a good weekend!

Another pretty day here. The wildflowers are putting on a show this fall.

Trade day was pleasant. Bought some local grown Jicama. I guess I should try to grow some next year. The silver dealers were there, and I bought a couple more rounds. I can't believe how fast it is going up...a year ago an ounce was $30. Today it is $45, and by years end I fully expect $50 silver and $4000 gold.

Almost finished a new woodrack at the camphouse...just lack getting the metal roofing over the top. We may piddle on that project today.

Good luck with the ant elimination, thanks for the OT!

@Lookout We had planned on buying some gold and silver, but got distracted by all kinds of stuff.
I might have gotten lucky. I was looking at car ports, and discovered a client/friend had taken over her Mom's metal building company. Maybe she will make me a good deal on a 3-car car port.
Your project sounds cool! I hope you do not experience sticker shock for that metal roofing, friend. Construction material is really inflated due to the f*king tariffs.
Enjoy your day of project piddling!

@Lookout I think we are gonna go with a wood frame car port, metal roof. There is no need for a cement pad, and no walls required.
Not a big labor project, not a big expense.
I meant to mention that morning glories are beautifying the roadsides here and there. My favorite!

I have a way to get rid of ants that works well.
I use three different kinds of ant killer. The ants take it back to the nest and they kill the nest.
The trick is they don't know which one is the poison killing the nest so they stop bringing it one at a time.
By the time they figure out that all three is poison the deed is done.
I use the Terro liquid, Terro graduals, and Chinese chalk.
Now the Carpenter ants at the farm is another story.
I have a ongoing verbal battle with my fervent MAGA son who thinks the left is riotous and violent.
Thanks for the J.J. Walker tune about "kickin' hippie's asses", the rednecks I grew up with.
I've passed it on.
Thanks for the OT as well and have a great day.

@earthling1 I will try your method! It is one thing for me to get bitten, but Dear One has no immune system and we don't want to find out the hard way how badly an infected bite might affect him.
Very few of the ants are those bastard carpenter ants. I have seen a big improvement overnight, so the $178.61 was well spent!
The "left" seems to be addicted to spouting off threats on social media. And this helps in what way? Do they not understand antifa is not an organized movement, and anybody could be mistaken for one of them and get the terrorist treatment?
MAGA didn't really need much of an excuse to attack the left to begin with. All the while, Mossad blew the hole in Kirk's neck. How soon before making that claim will be considered a hate speech crime?
Well, occasionally, maybe it does some good to kick a hippie's ass, friend! Enjoy your weekend!

Noted the stuff he used. Will try it.
We have a colossal cedar tree leaning heavily towards our vacation trailer and has a CA nest inside it. So I need to either vanquish the ants, move the trailer, or cut the tree down.
Will have to move the trailer to safely drop the tree, so humm, decisions decisions.
Thanks for the tip.

@earthling1 be the decider on when and where the tree falls, otherwise, the ants will be.
Maybe the only time I ever welcomed them was when they nested in some stumps. Instead of paying someone to remove them, all I had to do was kick them down. I'm glad the video offered some useful info.

snuck out down to the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs last night, to see one of our favorite bands: the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

No, it isn't misspelled: there's nothing like a metal band fronted by bagpipers. They were down a piper, unfortunately- one was not feeling well, probably because of the altitude (which is no joke for a true Scotsman blowing that hard and doing choreo!)

chillipipers.jpeg

Much whisky was drunk, and much happiness was had. These guys are not a parody band- they have been doing it for 20+ years, are damned good musicians, and well worth seeking out.

I have to commission a proper kilt in my wife's Clan Hamilton Ancient Hunting Green tartan- I felt very, very underdressed... (;-) I wore my Clan Fraser Whisky tee-shirt, but it just isn't the same, somehow.

We were just at the Highland Games last weekend at the Denver Polo Grounds in Sedalia, for my annual dose of haggis and cullen skink, with a little cock-a-leekie on the side just for good measure (if one Scottish soup is good, then two will most assuredly be better!). Good times!

@usefewersyllables I had paid for a tour of Scotland when Covid hit and all tours were cancelled. My hope was to stroll behind a True Scotsman on a windy day!
And to lay eyes on the Loch Ness Monster, of course!
Well, friend, get your kilt made and wear it correctly!
My Saturday night will be eating out at a local Mexican restaurant, lots of mariachi band music over their sound system. Best I can come up with is to wear a hand made tunic top I bought in Guatemala. Dear One might wear one of his gorgeous Mexican Wedding shirts.
It has been 4 years since we vacationed 4 days in Co. Strings. One day...
Enjoy your weekend, my friend!

for our upcoming UK trip will be to go back to Scotland. London is just another big city to me at this point, one run by corrupt oligarchs, to be escaped as quickly as possible- but Edinburgh is a completely different kettle of fish, and we want to get back to her ancestral stomping grounds in Paisley as well.

She feels about Scotland the way I feel about Grenada. I may be coming back alone, until I can make arrangements to rejoin her there. And my current "employer" has an outpost in Silicon Glen, so I might even be able to remain semi-employed there. Oh, the quandary...

Had some amazing times in Oban as well. I love being able to get scallops with the collar still on them, literally right off the boat- there's a waterfront stand on the dock there that will do scallops straight out of the bucket they were offloaded in, and it doesn't get any fresher than that.

Oh, and they have some whisky too, here and there. But that's a whole set of stories for another time...

@usefewersyllables do require space and time!
I just read that Great Britain just went digital only purchases. Bio metrics writ large. How the hell will tourists get around? Sometimes you can't get into a bathroom without paying for it, or being a paying customer at the business.
So, Scotland allows foreigners and ex-pats to have a job?
I would be constantly worried that Scotland would do whatever GB demanded.
I am going to research Grenada. I know nothing about it.

tribulations. I have one more sprinkler repair to do and then that's done for a while. I plan to plant 6ea pre-started bush beans today, and maybe scatter a few more carrot seeds. Then I can get bark to pruning and maybe test by fruit picker gadget on some oranges up near the top of the tree. It's my last day cooking for a week, so I get to jump on a bunch of other stuff starting tomorrow.

@QMS has constraints, but does green light to overwhelm the opposition (citizens) and deadly force if their life is in danger. Like, police have killed people because they mistook a cell phone in the hand for a gun. If things go wrong, they will go very wrong very fast. Never thought I'd see the military killing us again. I thought Ohio State shamed us and prevented a repeat. I just might be wrong.

One or two of the regular threads I follow, had picked up on this symbolic act but I hadn't read them yet this morning. I can't place the setting but by the date and the location, I'm guessing it's the group that marched to the US embassy and stayed there overnight. I'm pretty sure, this is a secondary but natural issue for the demonstrators who are dealing with the US domination issue with respect to tariffs, trade, and national security. Demonstrations by the far right in South Korea, the paramilitaries and the geriatic fundamentalist Christians, typically carry US and Israeli flags.

Along the same lines, I saw this post about the only South Korean in the aide flotilla to Palestine. This woman is very interesting because her activism is focused on sailing to bring light to international issues. Hankyoreh is the major center left news media in South Korea.

Someone here might be interested in her sailing experiences. The link to the Hankyoreh article which describes her journeys sailing is in Korean; the article is easily translated to English by Chrome. When the website comes up just click the English button at the top right hand corner. The only mistakes in the article are pronoun mistakes; Haecho is definitely a woman (she not he). Haecho is her nickname, it means seaweed.
