Worth a full read:
Chris Hedges: Surrendering to Authoritarianism
I was not surprised when Columbia University’s interim president Katrina Armstrong caved to the demands of the Trump administration. She agreed to ban face masks or face coverings, prohibit protests in academic buildings and create an internal security force of 36 New York City Police officers empowered to “remove individuals from campus and/or arrest them when appropriate.” She has also surrendered the autonomy of academic departments, as demanded by the Trump administration, by appointing a new senior vice provost to “review” the university’s department of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies and the Center for Palestine Studies.
Elite universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Columbia or Yale, were created to train and perpetuate the plutocracy. They are not and never have been centers of cutting-edge intellectual thought or hospitable to dissidents and radicals. They cloak themselves in the veneer of moral probity and intellectualism but cravenly serve political and economic power. This is their nature. Don’t expect it to change, even as we fall headlong into authoritarianism.
Armstrong, like most of the heads of our universities, is fruitlessly humiliating herself. She would, I expect, happily make space on her office wall to hang an oversized portrait of the president. But what she does not know, and what history has taught us, is that no appeasement is sufficient with autocrats. She, and the rest of the liberal elites, groveling abjectly in an attempt to accommodate their new masters, will be steadily replaced or dominated by buffoonish goons such as those seeded throughout the Trump administration.
The Department of Education has warned 60 colleges and universities that they could face “potential enforcement actions,” if they do not comply with federal civil rights law that protects students from discrimination based on race or nationality, which includes antisemitism. Columbia, stripped of $400 million in federal grants, is desperately trying to restore the funding. I doubt it will work. Those mounting these assaults against universities intend to turn them into indoctrination machines. The so-called campaign against antisemitism is simply a cynical tool being used to achieve that end. ...
These institutions of privilege — I attended Harvard and have taught at Columbia and Princeton — have always been complicit in the crimes of their times. They did not, until the world around them changed, speak out against the slaughter of Native Americans, the enslavement of Africans, the crushing of labor and socialist organizations at the turn of the twentieth century and the purging of institutions, including the academy, during the Red Scare in the 1920s and 1930s, and later the witch hunts under McCarthyism. They turned on their students protesting the war in Vietnam in the 1960s as viciously as they are turning on them now. ...
And this is where we are. None of the liberal institutions, including the universities, the commercial media and the Democratic Party, will defend us. They will remain supine, hypocritically betray their supposed principles and commitment to democracy or willingly transform themselves into apologists for the regime. The purges and silencing of our most courageous and accomplished intellectuals, writers, artists and journalists — begun before Trump’s return to the White House — is being expedited.
Israel Exists Simultaneously As The Perpetual Aggressor And The Perpetual Victim
One major challenge is that Zionists benefit from abusing Palestinians and exerting influence in western governments, and they also benefit from people opposing these things — because it can be used to feed their victim-LARPing “antisemitism” narrative.
This dynamic allows Israel to go all-out in committing mass atrocities and apartheid abuses while Zionist oligarchs like Miriam Adelson openly purchase western governments without having to worry about the damage it does to their public image, because any response to the damage it does to their public image can be reframed as “antisemitism” and used to advance their interests even further by stomping out civil rights.
People demonstrate against Israel’s genocidal atrocities? That’s antisemitism — those protesters need to be silenced, arrested, and deported. People object to blatant Zionist influence in their governments? Antisemitic conspiracy theories; we need more hate speech laws and internet censorship. Palestinians take up armed resistance against their oppressors? Israel is the victim of unprovoked attacks from Jew-hating Arabs.
Even real anti-Jewish prejudice benefits the Zionists, because it strengthens the narrative about an urgent crisis of antisemitism which must be crushed by any amount of force necessary, as well as the narrative that Jews need a nation of their own where they can feel safe. So Israel can openly mass murder children while Israeli officials make overt statements of genocidal intent, and if someone blames all Jews for this because they see a state committing atrocities under the banner of the Star of David while claiming to represent all Jews, it only benefits Israel and its supporters.
(As an aside, this is why it’s so important not to blame this on “the Jews”. It’s not just that it’s inaccurate — not all Jews are Zionists, the majority of Zionists are non-Jews, and some of the most effective anti-Zionists in the world happen to be Jewish — it’s that you’re doing exactly what the Zionists and the empire propagandists want you to do. You’re doing their job for them. Don’t be a pro bono Israel propagandist. Make them work for that shit.)
Zionism therefore benefits from abuse and influence, and also benefits from any backlash against its abuse and influence. It is able to do this because Israel is backed by the propaganda machine of the western empire — the most powerful weapon of mass psychological influence ever devised. If the western political-media class were not constantly running cover for Israel’s crimes and helping Zionism spin all opposition to Israel as antisemitism, Israel would not be able to pull off this freakish cognitive straddle where it is simultaneously both the aggressor and the victim at all times.
And this is why it’s so important to fight against the western empire’s propaganda about Israel. Israel’s reliance on the imperial propaganda machine is the only weak point in this otherwise unassailable dynamic where any backlash against Israel’s abuses is harnessed and turned into a weapon to defend Israel. Propaganda only works if you don’t know it’s happening to you, so the only way to keep people from buying into the victim-LARPing of the Zionists is to open people’s eyes to the truth.
Once enough people see with sufficient clarity the lies and manipulations which go into protecting the interests of this genocidal apartheid state, Israel loses one of its most powerful weapons, because nobody’s going to buy into the narrative framework wherein Israel and its supporters try to frame themselves as the victims of the opposition to their abuses.
You fight against the propaganda by spreading truth and understanding about this dynamic in whatever way you can. Talk to people. Share useful information. Attend demonstrations. Distribute literature. Tweet, blog, make videos, make zines, make street art; whatever tools you have at your disposal to help people understand what’s really going on with Israel and the western empire.
All positive changes in human behavior are always preceded by an expansion of consciousness. Consciousness and dysfunction cannot coexist. All we need to do to bring health to this world is to spread awareness of the truth, so that the dysfunction which can only survive in darkness is unable to sustain itself.

Israeli Security Cabinet Approves Plan for 'Mass Ethnic Cleansing' of Gaza
Israel's Security Cabinet on Sunday approved the creation of new Defense Ministry directorate tasked with ethnically cleansing Palestinians from the Gaza Strip under the guise of "voluntary emigration."
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz euphemistically called the new agency the "Voluntary Emigration Bureau for Gaza residents interested in relocating to third countries" and claimed it will operate in accordance with international law.
However, given Israel's incessant flouting of international law—Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a fugitive from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice is hearing a genocide case against the country—critics excoriated Katz's claim.
"In reality, there is nothing 'voluntary' about the program the Netanyahu government is implementing," wroteWorld Socialist Web Site editor Andre Damon. "The population of Gaza is to be forced out of their ancestral homeland through deliberate mass starvation and mass killings by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)."
Katz also said the new directorate would be run "in accordance with the vision of U.S President Donald Trump," who last month said that the United States would "take over" Gaza after emptying the strip of its approximately 2.1 million Palestinians and transform the coastal enclave into the "Riviera of the Middle East."
After doubling down on his proposal, Trump then attempted to gaslight the world by directly contradicting his previous remarks when he said earlier this month that "nobody is expelling any Palestinians" from Gaza. By then, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich had declared that the so-called Trump Plan was "taking shape" in coordination with the U.S. administration.
However, leaders of Egypt and Jordan, where Trump has proposed sending Gazans, vehemently oppose the plan. A counterproposal issued by Egypt and other Arab nations—which involves rebuilding Gaza without forcibly displacing its residents—has the support of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation and nations including China, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy.
The reconquest of Gaza is a longtime goal of Israel's far-right, which, since the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023 and subsequent obliteration of the strip, has moved to put its recolonization plans into action.
"October 7 changed history. As a result of the brutal massacre, the Gazan Arabs have lost their rights to be here forever, they'll not stay here," Daniella Weiss, co-founder of the extremist settler movement Nachala, said during an October 2024 conference on the ethnic cleansing of Gaza attended by Smotrich and numerous other Israeli lawmakers.
"Each of you will witness how Jews go to Gaza and Arabs will disappear from Gaza," Weiss added.
The modern state of Israel was founded largely through the ethnic cleansing of more than 750,000 Palestinians, sometimes accomplished via massacres and death marches. The majority of Gaza's population today are survivors and descendants of Palestinians forced from their homeland to make way for Jewish immigrants in the post-World War II era.
Palestinians call the mass forced displacement of 1948 the Nakba, or catastrophe, and far-right Israelis today threaten to carry out a new Nakba to "finish the job," as Smotrich and others have said.
Critics including Israeli troops have claimed that the IDF is carrying out the so-called "General's Plan," a blueprint for the starvation and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from northern Gaza. Since October 2023, Israel has enforced what former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant—who is also wanted by the ICC for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity—called a "complete siege" of Gaza, a blockade which has exacerbated deadly starvation and illness in the strip.
The ‘General’s Plan’ is being fully implemented in all of Gaza, not just the north. Israel is liquidating the ghetto with the full backing of Canada and the United States. This is what ethnic cleansing looks like under bombardment & starvation. pic.twitter.com/l0XxmU1RQB

On Sunday, the Gaza Health Ministry said the death toll from Israel's 535-day assault on Gaza surpassed 50,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children. This, as Israeli forces have renewed their ferocious bombardment and invasion of the strip, killing hundreds of Palestinians including nearly 200 children, and wiping out entire families.
The ministry said that more than 113,000 others have been wounded since October 2023, and at least 14,000 more Palestinians are missing and presumed dead and buried beneath the rubble of hundreds of thousands of bombed-out buildings.
However, experts—including the authors of two peer-reviewed articles in the prestigious British medical journal The Lancet—say the actual death toll is likely much higher.

Oscar Winner 'LYNCHED, KIDNAPPED' By Israeli Forces
Oscar-winning Palestinian director attacked by Israeli settlers and arrested
A Palestinian director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land has been arrested by the Israeli army after masked settlers attacked his house. According to five Jewish American activists who witnessed the attack, Hamdan Ballal, one of the four directors of the the film that documented the destruction of villages in the West Bank, was surrounded and attacked by a group of about 15 armed settlers in Susya in the Masafer Yatta area south of Hebron.
“They started throwing stones towards Palestinians and destroyed a water tank near Hamdan’s house,” said Joseph, of the activists from the Center for Jewish Nonviolence, who asked not to use his full name for security reasons. The witnesses said that a group of soldiers arrived at the scene alongside other settlers dressed in military uniform, who chased Hamdan to his house and handed him over to the military. ‘‘The settlers destroyed his car with stones and slashed one of the tyres,’’ another witness, Raviv, told the Guardian. ‘‘All the windows and windshields were broken.’’
Ballal was injured by the settlers and taken by the Israeli army.
Members of the activist group filmed the attack and then entered the house and saw blood over the floor, which a family member said was spilled when Hamdan was hit on the head. The director, and another man – identified only as Nasser – were arrested and taken to a police station. It was not clear why.
In a statement the IDF said there was a violent confrontation between Palestinians and Israelis after “terrorists” threw rocks at Israeli citizens. ... Basel Adra, another of No Other Land’s four directors, who are all from Israel and Palestine, told the Guardian he thought the escalating settler violence might be a response to the international recognition won by the documentary. “Palestinians in the village have been under physical attack by settlers almost daily. The settlers’ violence is increasing here. Maybe it’s a revenge for the movie and the Oscar,” he said.
Outrage after White House accidentally texts journalist war plans: ‘Huge screw-up’
A catastrophic security leak is triggering bipartisan outrage after the Atlantic revealed that senior Trump administration officials accidentally broadcast classified military plans through a Signal group chat with a journalist reading along. On the Senate floor on Monday, the minority leader, Chuck Schumer, called it “one of the most stunning breaches of military intelligence I have read about in a very, very long time” and urged Republicans to seek a “full investigation into how this happened, the damage it created and how we can avoid it in the future”.
“Every single one of the government officials on this text chain have now committed a crime – even if accidentally,” the Delaware senator Chris Coons wrote on Twitter/X. “We can’t trust anyone in this dangerous administration to keep Americans safe.” ...
According to reporting in the Atlantic, the editor in chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, was accidentally invited into a Signal chat group with more than a dozen senior Trump administration officials including Vice-President JD Vance, the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, national security adviser, Mike Waltz, secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, and others. The reporting exposes not only a historic mishandling of classified information but a potentially illegal communication chain in which sensitive military plans about airstrikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen were casually shared in an encrypted group chat with automatic delete functions. ...
As the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, Jim Himes has overseen countless classified briefings. But the Signal group chat leak of impending war plans has made him “horrified”.
“If true, these actions are a brazen violation of laws and regulations that exist to protect national security, including the safety of Americans serving in harm’s way,’ he said. “These individuals know the calamitous risks of transmitting classified information across unclassified systems, and they also know that if a lower-ranking official under their command did what is described here, they would likely lose their clearance and be subject to criminal investigation.”

Columbia student protester sues Trump administration for trying to deport her
A Columbia University student who took part in pro-Palestinian protests at the university is suing Donald Trump’s administration for attempting to deport her.
Attorneys for Yunseo Chung, a 21-year-old who has legally resided in the US since childhood, filed a complaint on Monday describing the government’s actions as “shocking overreach” and an “unprecedented and unjustifiable assault” on her rights.
Chung has participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus since 2023, and was arrested earlier this month while protesting the university’s “excessive punishments” of student activists, according to the lawsuit, which was first reported by the New York Times.
Days later, the suit states, immigration authorities began efforts to arrest Chung and remove her from the country, and an official told her lawyer her status as a permanent resident was being “revoked”. ...
The lawsuit filed on behalf of Chung names Trump, Marco Rubio – who the lawsuit states ordered the revocation of Chung’s legal status – Kristi Noem and other officials. Trump and Rubio have both voiced support for revoking the visas of international students who take part in pro-Palestinian protests.

Journalists among more than 1,100 arrested in Turkey crackdown
Turkish authorities have arrested more than 1,100 people including journalists, while bombarding the social media platform X with requests to block hundreds of accounts after tens of thousands took to the streets in the largest anti-government protests in years. One journalist was detained while covering demonstrations that took place outside Istanbul city hall, while nine others were detained in dawn raids.
The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, speaking after a cabinet meeting in the capital, Ankara, called the protests a “movement of violence”. He said the country’s main opposition Republican People’s party (CHP) would be held accountable for injuries to police officers and damage to property, adding that they should stop “provoking” the public.
The sweeping arrests came the morning after the Istanbul mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was arrested on corruption charges and sent to a high-security prison on the outskirts of the city, on the same day he was named the opposition’s candidate for president. Mass demonstrations triggered by İmamoğlu’s detention amount to the largest in Turkey in more than a decade. The protests have resulted in increasing pushback from the Turkish authorities, with police now readily deploying pepper spray, teargas and armoured water cannon trucks against crowds gathering in Istanbul as well as other major towns and cities across the country. ...
The Turkish interior minister, Ali Yerlikaya, said 1,133 people had been detained in five days, starting with the dawn raid in which İmamoğlu and tens of municipal officials were taken into custody. Many of those detained in the days since were arrested for breaching a city-wide ban on protests in Istanbul. The city’s governor also restricted entry to Istanbul over the weekend in an attempt to curb the demonstrations.
Turkish authorities deny that the charges against İmamoğlu, a rival of the president, are political. ... Evin Barış Altıntaş, who heads the Media and Law Studies Association, a free speech organisation that supports journalists detained in Turkey, said it was notable that most of the journalists detained overnight were photographers. “The main aim is to cut off the number of people taking photos at protests,” she said, pointing to threats from Ebubekir Şahin, the head of Turkey’s media regulator, RTÜK, to suspend broadcaster’s licences for broadcasting live footage of the demonstrations.
Trump VS Federal Judges: The Clash Over Deportation Due Process
Nazis had more rights than Venezuelan migrants to contest removal, US judge claims
An appeals court judge claimed on Monday that Nazis were given more rights to contest their removal from the United States during the second world war than Venezuelan migrants deported by the Trump administration. The comments came during a contentious hearing shortly after a lower court thwarted the Trump administration’s effort to deport the immigrants under a roughly 225-year-old war powers law.
Judge James Boasberg on Monday rejected the government’s attempt to vacate restraining orders protecting Venezuelans accused of gang ties from deportation, instead ruling that individuals must receive hearings before their removal. “The named Plaintiffs dispute they are members of Tren de Aragua; they may not be deported until a court decides the merits of their challenge,” Boasberg wrote.
Later on Monday, US circuit judge Patricia Millett questioned the government lawyer Drew Ensign on whether Venezuelans targeted for removal under the Alien Enemies Act had time to contest the Trump administration’s assertion that they were members of the Tren de Aragua gang before they were put on planes and deported to El Salvador. “Nazis got better treatment under the Alien Enemies Act than has happened here,” Millett said, to which Ensign responded: “We certainly dispute the Nazi analogy.” ...
Lawyers for Trump have asked the appeals court to lift Boasberg’s ruling that blocked the administration’s use of the wartime act. If the appeals court rules in their favor, that could give a free hand for the Trump administration to use it to deport any immigrant it accuses of being a gang member without the standard due process owed to accused persons in the US.
Trump asks supreme court to halt ruling ordering the rehiring of federal workers
The Trump administration asked the supreme court on Monday to halt a ruling ordering the rehiring of thousands of federal workers dismissed in mass firings aimed at dramatically downsizing the federal government.
The emergency appeal argues that the judge cannot force the executive branch to rehire some 16,000 probationary employees.
It also calls on the conservative-majority court to rein in the growing number of federal judges who have slowed Donald Trump’s sweeping agenda, at least for now, by finding that his administration has not followed federal law.

US postmaster general resigns with immediate effect
The US postmaster general, Louis DeJoy, who said earlier this month that he had asked the government efficiency team led by Elon Musk for assistance with a number of issues, is resigning effective on Monday, the agency said. ...
Donald Trump said in February that he was considering merging the United States Postal Service with the commerce department, a move Democrats said would violate federal law. ...
DeJoy has led a dramatic effort to restructure USPS over the last five years, including cutting forecast cumulative losses over a decade to $80bn from $160bn. The outgoing postal chief has used tactics similar to the Musk-led “department of government efficiency” (Doge) team, including shrinking the workforce and canceling or renegotiating contracts.
Two media outlets reported last month that Trump was preparing to issue an executive order to fire the USPS’s board of governors. Musk said this month he thought USPS should be privatized.
Big Oil Doesn't Just Want to Get Rich Wrecking the Climate—They Want Lower Taxes Too
Having helped install the most fossil fuel-friendly administration of the climate awareness era, Big Oil and their Republican boosters in Congress are now setting their sights on undermining a tax enacted by during the tenure of former President Joe Biden as part of the landmark Inflation Reduction Act.
Alan Zibel, research director at the consumer advocacy watchdog Public Citizen, and Lukas Shankar-Ross, deputy director of Friends of the Earth's Climate and Energy Justice Program, noted in a report published Monday that Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), who chairs the Senate Ethics Committee, earlier this year introduced industry-backed legislation, the Promoting Domestic Energy Production Act, for possible inclusion in Republicans' proposed $4.5 trillion tax giveaway to corporations and the ultrawealthy.
As Common Dreams reported in January, the fossil fuel industry spent an estimated $445 million during the 2024 election cycle to elect President Donald Trump and other GOP candidates who serve their climate-wrecking interests, and it expects much in return.
"Domestic oil and gas companies, including from Lankford's home state of Oklahoma, have warned their investors about the corporate alternative minimum tax," Zibel and Shankar-Ross wrote. "The industry could soon be rewarded with specially tailored tax relief courtesy of their Republican political allies."
As the report explains:
Here's how the tax scheme works: In August 2022, President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act, which made historic climate investments. To help pay for new spending, the bill included a set of corporate tax increases, the largest of which was the $222 billion corporate alternative minimum tax. This tax is meant to prevent corporations that deliver massive profits to investors from paying nothing or nearly nothing in taxes because of corporate-friendly tax loopholes. Under the corporate minimum tax, if a company reports an average of at least $1 billion in annual income over three years, then it must pay 15% of that reported income in taxes, minus certain deductions.
The report highlights Republican efforts to eliminate the minimum tax, including via legislation introduced by Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and endorsed by the American Petroleum Institute, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Manufacturers, National Mining Association, Western Energy Alliance, and industry lobbyists.
The bill introduced by Lankford would enable fossil fuel companies to skirt the minimum tax by allowing them to deduct "intangible" drilling costs, a tactic used as an effective subsidy for more than 120 years. Zibel and Shankar-Ross described the tax dodge as "the oldest and the largest fossil fuel subsidy on the books," and one which "allows all of the costs for drilling an oil or gas well to be deducted immediately in the year they are incurred."
"It is simply outrageous that the GOP is using its trifecta to create yet another fossil fuel subsidy," Shankar-Ross said in a statement, referring to Republicans' control of the White House and both chambers of Congress. "If this polluter handout is snuck into the GOP tax bill, then cuts to Medicaid and food stamps could well pay for another giveaway to Big Oil. That's obscene."
Zibel asserted that "oil and gas companies are using the political influence they purchased to dodge paying even a minimal part of their fair share."
"If individual taxpayers understood the magnitude of the extreme subsidies for Big Oil, they would be shocked," he added. "The newest effort to bypass even the most modest of tax bills by the industry is shocking, but sadly not surprising."
Christians worldwide urged to take legal action on climate crisis
Christians around the world are being encouraged to take legal action against polluters and those who finance them. In a new climate justice handbook, the World Council of Churches sets out practical ways faith organisations can help protect young people and future generations from the climate crisis.
Drawing on Christian teachings on stewardship and justice, it presents strategic litigation as a tool to “create hope and hold responsible parties accountable”. Many faith leaders have spoken up about the climate crisis, including Pope Francis, who published a powerful 2015 encyclical and has continued to exhort Catholics to action.
But the World Council of Churches, which represents a wide range of denominations around the world, said it had become “increasingly clear that advocacy alone is insufficient” as CO2 emissions continued to rise, driven mainly by the “relentless expansion” of fossil fuel industries. “This situation compels us to recognise that there is no contradiction between utilising legal frameworks and embodying Christian values,” it says. “In fact, our faith calls us to speak truth to power and to seize every available legal measure to protect our planet and its inhabitants.”
The handbook notes that climate litigation has grown dramatically in recent years. Such lawsuits can succeed directly in changing corporate and state behaviour, but they also shift public discourse and catalyse broader changes in policy. Lawsuits are increasingly targeting organisations that fund and invest in fossil fuels, including public and commercial banks, pension funds and credit agencies.
“A targeted legal intervention that increases the costs of doing business for fossil fuel firms could foreseeably have significant system level knock-on effects, for example, making renewable energy technologies cheaper than fossil fuels,” says the handbook. “A focus on financial actors offers a rare opportunity for systemic impact that could be unrealisable through the targeting of individual fossil fuel firms.”

i wonder what obligation these people who have put themselves in dangerous situations (surely nobody is foolish enough to think that going to war is not going to have possibly traumatic effects on them) feel that the society of another country owes them?
now, i can see them and would support them demanding that the state of israel pay up for therapeutic measures to resolve their trauma, but americans should not have to tiptoe around in public to avoid making them upset by exercising their speech rights.
Any person can sue
It's the situs of the tort that determines the court's jurisdiction. I think her standing is somewhat tenuous, and the theory of the case. The effect of the suit is you can't criticize Israeli policies or the IDF actions because my brother is/was a soldier in Israel. That's a reach.
I think the key thing with these attacks on dissent at Universities is that it is a part of a fascist movement called the "dark enlightenment." This in fact, is a belief system, that is behind Trump, Musk, DOGE and company. The goal is to disable "the Cathedral" which is just code for an attack on traditional institutions, in an effort to displace their influence and control them from the top by an (un)enlightened monarch, and his cadre of true believers, who know better than everyone else how to manage society (for their own benefit).
It's a symptom of how far the corruption of traditional institutions has gone that they would readily fall prey to this autocratic monarchism. Any criticism of their actions, whether based upon pragmatism or the unlawful nature of their activities, is met with ad hominem attacks, deception, and evasion, while the activity continues it's essentially subversive process. The end justifies the means, the techno cadres in the know, are more competent than the rest of us, so they get to rule, and manage the new autocratic system. Rules, judges, civil rights, who needs them?

I have a couple of minor points
The first deals with the Hedges position on the Columbia "authoritarianism". I believe that for the last 100 years or so the distinctions between profit and non-profit, public and private, taxable and non-taxable, have been blurred to the point where there are no rules.
In the case of Columbia, why would some billionaire have more say in acceptable speech than the people who provide a large part of the support for the school? If it is a private school then they can take any position they like on any issue. But if they receive any public money then the public should be the entity that can make that position.
A couple of weeks ago I managed to get a 1099 covering our benefits from OMB. In the latter part of last year we lost access to our CSRS accounts. We had been using electronic dealings with CSRS for quite a few years but some moron in our fake gov't decided to hand off a lucrative contract that would provide a common entry point for anyone having dealings with a gov't agency. That contractor (ID.ME) determined that my login would be dependent upon my email address and my cell phone number. My internet provider had blocked our cell numbers in an attempt to force me to keep them as a provider regardless of the terrible service and the hijacking of my phone for no-choice marketing. Back to the contractor.... my email was thru the provider... gone because it was linked to the cell. Cell, gone.
Access to OMB and CSRS, gone. I finally managed to send a request directly to OMB to get a hardcopy of the 1099. I got it and then used the IRS form system to do my taxes. I paid my taxes last week by EFT. I believe IRS gives some leeway when the payment is made before the end of the season. It was a relief. BTW, I don't have the problem with SSA. They allow we old farts to keep our previous login. I also did an in-person verification of my identity with SSA.
Bad news... IRS said that they are being forced to use the ID.ME system and will activate it later this year. WA state also announced that they will mandate the use of ID.ME later this year. Unless I can activate a login with ID.ME before next Feb I will not be able to get plates for my car.
From a security standpoint I found ID.ME to be totally unacceptable.
I can only hope that the DOGE people kill the ID.ME contract. The Automatic Earth had a good piece on the latest DT EO covering digital payments. There's no way to be sure that the EO provides the necessary safeguard for the EFTs but it appears to be far and away better than the EU ideas... eg, some people are limited in their access. We shall see.
At this time I have decided that the PacNW has lost its allure and I would rather have a small home on a few acres of land... and a 3 season porch with a hot-tub. Maybe it's time to go back to PA or OH, maybe AL or SC.
For those who might enjoy some nostalgia, Robin Yocum has a few excellent books that pretty much mirror my experience growing up along the Ohio River when we had a steel industry. If you get the chance... robinyocum.net.
Please be well all, life is getting tougher. Charles Hugh Smith has a good piece about POD people.

On Goldber.
ETA this interesting tidbit.
In the Gaza thread on MoA lots of people are reporting that there is a big build up at Diego Garcia. Either for Yemen or Iran.
Was that discussed in the group chat? And was Goldberg invited to kinda spill the beans about an upcoming war? Time will tell.
Here in the USA arming and funding Israeli genocide and mass murder is perfectly OK, but objecting to it will get you expelled, arrested or deported.
These individuals deserve to be exposed.
