"Bamboo is flexible, bending with the wind but never breaking, capable of adapting to any circumstance. It suggests resilience, meaning that we have the ability to bounce back even from the most difficult times."

"Once a century, all of a certain kind of bamboo flower on the same day. Whether they are in Malaysia or in a greenhouse in Minnesota makes no difference, nor does the age or size of the plant. They flower. Some current of an inner language passes between them, through space and separation, in ways we cannot explain in our language. They are all, somehow, one plant, each with a share of communal knowledge."

Bamboo is an interesting useful woody grass.

An Alabama agronomist, D. G. Sturkie, studied growing bamboo in Alabama.

He even suggested planting fields to be mowed and used to make paper. The cut bamboo will regrow without requiring replanting.

I love the beautiful buildings created from bamboo.

Hope everyone is enjoying the last days of summer. Thanks for the OT!

Gorgeous pics, QMS.
Brought back some memories.
I enjoyed a meal, some music, and a lecture and cooking demonstration among an indigenous tribe in Ecuador, right on the banks of the Amazon. The dwelling was a home and meeting place made with bamboo. Elaborate, beautiful, practical, a wonderful use of the environment.
Another bamboo community center, for want of a better description, was in Panama. Meal, lecture, cooking demonstration, but this time, we danced to the music.
I have line danced in Texas, Louisiana, Panama, and Kenya.
Good times!
Thanks for the OT, dear friend!

these days are mostly Mis. That said, bamboo is wunnerful stuff unless the wrong species is growing in your yard. Stuff is unstoppable and unkillable, and on that day when the cockroaches take over the earth they will find themselves in a global forest of bamboo.

The plural of bamboo is bamboo, else I could segue into some commentary about the guiding principle of both our economy and our politics is bamboozle. Speaking of which, is "segue" pronounced "Segway"(tm)?

thass all i got fur now, gotta go work some kinks out of the old frame. speaking of kinks:

depot fairly deep into Russia. Nobody knows or is telling exactly how, with what weaponry, and, most importantly, launched from where. There is a lot of speculation that it was a drone or missile attack from Latvia, where Natostan forces are currently engaged in some large Drill. omebody is escalating and it appears that one source may have asserted that the depot is where the mythical Iranian missiles that blinkenstein was talking up were allegedly stashed, so Nato involvement is that much more likely if that too isn't simply further speculation.

@enhydra lutris

The real question is whether it was initiated from the ground somehow, or from the air. If it is the latter, the current lack of information would seem to indicate that some significant technical means were employed (stealth and/or ground-hugging, nap of the earth delivery), far exceeding anything that the Ukies have readily available. If it turns out to be a NATO attack originating from NATO soil, then things are likely to get very real, very quickly. That is a very big red line, and not one to cross lightly.

Once again, it'll all come down to which NATO assets the Rus decide to obliterate first. This was not a move that a sane leadership would make, INMSHAAO.

drone strike and that the target contained 300 Iskanders. I got it from the military summary channel morning short video, published at 2 am pacific, and he was referencing other sources which had already been published, so the specificity was established in that interval. I wonder what the distance to the town from the nearest part of ukiestan is.

One blew up at the funeral of someone killed by it yesterday. Why anyone is still wearing one is mind boggling.

This was an evil act of terror. Period. Israel had no idea what the collateral damage would be, but then they wouldn’t care. Imagine that happening here and our reaction to it…yeah it’d be bad.

Israel is trying to get its war on and the countries involved know that. Rock and a hard place.

once again, the USA, israel and Lebanon are all signatories to this Convention

CCW Amended Protocol II

The Protocol on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Mines, Booby-Traps and Other Devices as amended on 3 May 1996 (Amended Protocol II)

Amended Protocol II strengthened existing rules on the use of mines, booby traps and other devices....

...Prohibits the use of booby-traps & other devices in the form of apparently harmless portable objects such as children’s toys, specifically designed to contain explosive material.....

The Protocol contains rules which regulate, but do not ban the use of landmines, booby-traps and other explosive devices

...applies to non-international armed conflicts as well as conflicts between States, which means that its rules not only apply to States, but also to parties in a conflict other than States....

And an act of war in addition to an act of terrorism. I haven’t seen any Biden mouthpiece saying that they are waiting for ‘more information' on this event. It will be interesting to see how they spin it in Israel’s favor.

There are 19 characters under the bamboo radical in Hart's Hanja 3rd Ed. (six strokes) My unabridged Han moon dictionary has 332 characters under the bamboo radical.

Watching the homesteader youtube videos from Vietnam mostly, is there any implement they might need that can't be made from bamboo? The poorer the homesteader and more remote the location, the more likely virtually everything they need (except their video camera and machete) is made from bamboo, shelter, roofing, furniture, fences, bridges, irrigation, baby carriers, animal cages, back packs, baskets, food, musical instruments, hats, raincoats, shovels...As commerce/wealth increases, the more likely shingles, corrugated roofing, lumber, plywood, aluminum, ceramics, steel, tools, even power tools, etc are purchased for similar uses. Lately, most of the people we see there were wiped out by heavy rains and flooding this season from nearby streams and are looking for their animals, salvaging movable items, and rebuilding.

Then in Korea, there is the song hated by conservatives, 죽창가 Bamboo Spear Song. Inspired by the Tonghak rebellion near the end of the 19th Century, the bamboo spear is symbolic of a virtually unarmed peasant rebellion. The song was said to have been written as a poem during the Chun Doo-wan dictatorship, to inspire the democratic movement to overthrow the dictatorship. Conservatives hate it.

This mountain village, soar together!
Let's become a flower. The flower
nurtured by falling tears and broken feet
let's become noktu* flowers

This mountain valley all together take flight!
Lets become a bird. A bird
To north and south it cries,
Let's become the flying blue bird

This field alight together
Let's become a fire. A fire
burning plains lighting the darkness
Let's become the field afire

Let's do that, it's time for that
One more time, this village
Let's become a rebellion
Green pine green bamboo fixed in our heart
Let's become the bamboo spear

( 죽창가 / 김남주 시, 김경주 곡 )

*nokdu is mung bean. The peasant leader of the Tonghuk rebellion was called General Nokdu. He was captured by Japanese troops and executed.

I saw everyone here talking about the full moon lately. So I took a look last night, fortunately there was a clear sky amidst the overcast, and I could see the 秋夕 Chuseok moon clearly. It's still fall (mid autumn) festival time in Korea, South Korea anyway.

(edit: wouldn't load the bamboo hanzi I loaded earlier).

I have lived the last year in a bamboo hut, 2 levels, sleep up top, with an outdoor kitchen and shower. Rent is 12 hours/week working at bamboo works in Kapaa. Very convenient as I can ride my bike to work, the grocery store and the beach. I could be the poster guy for a WEF walking community and life style advertisement... LOL
