Alert: Statewide shutdown of all campuses today. UCSC has cop cars parked across both the campus entrances.
United Auto Workers Local 2865, the union that represents teaching assistants across the UC system, announced Monday its bargaining team unanimously voted for all union members across the state to vote on whether or not to authorize an unfair labor practice strike against the University of California, further escalating tensions between the university and the union over the cost-of-living adjustment movement sweeping the UC system.
...
I am at a complete loss. There may be a path forward. It could appear out of nowhere and we would all, in lockstep turn together and move forward, onward toward the change that must happen.
In any case, many of us will keep slogging ahead. In the meantime, the climate crisis has in no way abated during the last month of our Get Out The Vote effort. The ptb are playing every card they have to continue to hold onto their power regardless of the consequences. However, what is different now, this day, different from all days before, is that the planet is ceasing to respire as it continues to swelter.
So the question is, what is the path forward.
Being on the UCSC campus at the base with the strikers for two weeks was inspiring, enlightening, overwhelming, sobering. The presence of the police was unnecessary and purposefully intimidating. Ultimately they left only a few officers.
Last Day GOTV Upper Campus Base
More UC campuses are now striking. I hope that they can put the needed pressure on the Regents to receive the pay raise they desperately need.
We showed up every day and set up the Bernie table. They showed up every day. Just being there together was reinforcing. They picketed, they danced to the music that the dj played, we all ate lunch brought by a local supportive restaurant. They had a general meeting every night. We were behind them 100%. It is amazing what just showing up can do.
What is next and where do we go now?

We must keep fighting for Bernie to the bitter end
The delegate count for Bernie is within 50 of Biden. All the votes from super Tuesday have not been counted yet. However the possibility of a brokered convention looms large and if the super delegates make Biden the candidate I predict he will loose to the rump. There is so much propaganda swirling in the main stream media right now trying to demoralize Bernie voters it makes me sick.
You got that right jbob
And they are shutting the whole UC system down today. Far fucking out. Send them light and protection and good thoughts y'all. Thanks jbob, have a good one...

Sorry, never mind, move along now, idiot alert.

Cuba is a dead horse, stop beating it.
Our future is in Warren's Hands right now.
Not so much "these hands."
Let's hope she makes the right decision and endorses Bernie without being counterproductively opportunistic.
All we can do right now is wait in breathless anticipation.
I'm guessing that WFP is part of the negotiations. Hopefully, they won't wind up with any more shit on their faces like they did after their executive board endorsed Warren over Bernie despite a popular vote in Bernie's favor.
Sorry I don’t buy that.
Furthermore, if you’re expecting Warren to “do the right thing” I think you’re going to be very disappointed. She didn’t in 2016. She won’t now. She’s made that pretty obvious, I think.
Bernie needs to win this regardless of what Warren does. At this point, it’s still possible.
EDIT: guess we'll know soon enough as she's out now and hasn't yet announced anything endorsement wise.
Idolizing a politician is like believing the stripper really likes you.
She has not come through before
If she lines up behind Bernie and he loses, then her whole career is gone. May be anyway after all is said and done. (Thinking she is a snake in the grass but maybe not since I like snakes.) Thanks Wally. Have a good one...

My view on Warren
http://www.stopmebeforeivoteagain.org/stopme/chapter02.html
"You can't just leave those who created the problem in charge of the solution."---Tyree Scott
If she steps down she will almost certainly endorse Biden,
and that act will expose her as a fraud and a poseur; she is pretty much stuck, forced to ride it out, hope Biden wins and then "graciously" support him at the convention.
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Negotiations
She's putting herself up for bid.
Biden won't give her VP, she isn't that valuable and he should get someone like Stacy Abrams to actually help the ticket in the general. He (or the Obama faction) has offered Warren something for her cooperation, but it isn't that.
So she's trying to get a better offer from Sanders. The problem is that she isn't a good VP for him either, he should pick someone to help his ticket, perhaps a Latino or African-American woman.
I'm not sure how good a surrogate Warren would make. Really, Sanders may just be looking for an endorsement here, and that may not be worth all that much. Some of her supporters (40% according to Morning Consult) will go to Sanders. The rest show Biden/Buttigieg/Klobuchar, in other words Biden. So a nearly even split, and Warren's endorsement would probably only move a few of them to the other side. A Warren endorsement would give a short term boost in the news cycle, maybe a couple of days. That isn't worth a VP slot.
"The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function." -- Albert Bartlett
"A species that is hurtling toward extinction has no business promoting slow incremental change." -- Caitlin Johnstone
Gabbard would make a great VP pick
And she could throw a couple of delegates to Bernie. Maybe more if she continues her campaign successfully.
Neither Russia nor China is our enemy.
Neither Iran nor Venezuela are threatening America.

Good morning, magi,
You rock California; thank you for choosing wisely.
Was sad to read that UC Santa Cruz fired 54 of the striking graduate students. We warned our UNC system in the eighties that getting in bed with corporate money for funding would lead to dire consequences, and these good young people are now paying the price.
One can not live on income that barely pays the rent. Period. Glad to hear the strike is growing, may the force be with you all.
Well, the rats race to get on board the Biden ship, wanting their slice of cheese; scurrying so fast they miss the broken mast.
Bernie had a wonderful interview on NBC last evening, so calm, simple and spot on; this is doable, but after the events of the last week or so, who can possibly predict. It needs saying that Clyburn's underground voting block, which is deeply entrenched in the South, delivers votes like the best old Chicago political machines of the past. No, black people are not monolithic in their thinking, but the southern political machine is. We know the old story, power corrupts and fear works.
Anyways, onward we must go.
Hugs to you and your friends for the great work!

Dear magi
you and your group out there in CA are amazing. Hats of to you all and many thanks.
This is exactly the conversation we need to have right now. I have to run errands this morning but I think this issue is the crux of the matter.
I was trying to talk about this in another thread yesterday, but I guess my words were more garbled than not, and I didn't convey my meaning well. I'm going to copy and paste a bit of what I said because I'm in a hurry now but I think it is very relevant to the conversation.
Just to give a bit of context, someone said that working people do not have the time to be involved in the political life of this country. My experience however, is the opposite. I had the great good luck to be with a diverse group of people working for change. We of course were stymied because all the candidates we worked so hard for, ultimately went to the dark side (once we helped them procure their victory) and betrayed us. That though, is beside the point. What is the point is we did that. We were good. No, we were damn good. In retrospect I realize, no one can take that away from us. But more than that, there were groups all over the country doing much the same thing that we were doing and they were just as good as we were. Just like your group now. The lesson for me...we need to do it again. Except more and better. So thanks again magi. You are on the front line.
All you good people are like a hurricane.
Forgot to post
I was part of a group that made it really easy for people to sign up for a specific task, knock it out and leave. We had union people come in after work make some phone calls and then go home for the evening. We had tons of college students. We had nurses and doctors come in and do a bit. We had moms and dads bring their kids who did their homework or something while mom or dad did data entry for a while. We actually had a lot of fun, it was a community, occasionally we ate meals together, we went block walking together, we had PR and visibility events together. People made a little time in their lives for this. It was very impressive.
I do realize some have absolutely no spare time. We have to start somewhere though.

This is the only way change will happen. I am not on the front lines now. But I spent the last two weeks with these folks and feel like I am one with their cause. The UC will not budge unless they feel financial pain. And this will cause it. They are a profit center. And have built their lives on the backs of others, of these grad students and those that have gone before.

Hi Magiamma,
So, thank you! And thanks to all that are standing up. The bloat of upper management at the UC systems has gotten serially greater over the years as far as I can tell.
In the end, these issues are trivial as compared to climate change, but they are part of the same cloth: it is all part of building a functioning future ecosystem where our grandkids and greatgrandkids and other beings on this beautiful planet can all thrive. Thank you.
Good morning magi. Nothing much to say. Life goes on,
as they say, so we get to try to make the best of it. Word for the day; pyt (Danish) sort of beyond meh, a verbal shrug indicative of and also triggering the act of dismissal, a response to anything not worth getting stressed about, which in today's world, needs to be anything and everything because we're knee deep in madness and behaving otherwise will break you.

As I expected,
Warren drops out without endorsing either Biden or Sanders. My guess is that team Biden didn't offer her a really sweet deal -- may not have offered her anything. As Warren has spent the past month revealing her true colors, Sanders couldn't offer her much of anything. Therefore, she avoids burning either bridge.
We don't know if there is no endorsement
We will find out at 12:30.

Nothing good.
By waiting to endorse, she's only helping Biden.
At this point, I imagine she'll endorse Biden Monday morning to steal the news cycle the day before Michigan, et al. And I'm also guessing she'll take some shots at Bernie beyond a simple endorsement of Biden. Maybe not but some of her answers to questions from reporters rubbed me in a bad way.
Many variables in play
that she has to calculate. I'm going to get a bit wonky, but Liz is wonky in part because she doesn't have well developed political instincts.
One, where does she see herself going from here? In the last month she squandered whatever chance to had for the VP slot with either Biden or Sanders. So, barring a truly weird change of events, that's out.
Two, how solid and committed are her voters? Amy and Pete's voters could be counted on to overwhelming go with their endorsee with a smattering to Bloomberg. Where they weren't going was to Sanders. She was third in MA with 21.4%. Sanders 26.7% and Biden 33.6%. DC and Boston Democratic powers have never liked her. She was propped up by the left wing of the party. Either one or both could challenge her in the 2024 primary.
Three, she's had enough personal personal contact with Biden over the past few months that she may have a better idea than the general public as to his current cognitive functions. If it's not good and she recognizes that it's not a speech impediment, endorses Biden nevertheless, and Biden falls apart during the general election, she (along with others) will be grilled as to why they didn't say anything and lose a degree of her remaining credibility.
Four, related to three but includes additional assessments, she has no doubt that Biden will lose to Trump. Not endorsing during the primary gives her wiggle room with both factions of the DP should Biden lose the general election.
Five, should Sanders somehow win the nomination, she would not have totally alienated the Sanders wing. That would have more currency for her should Sanders also go on to win the general election.
The smart bet for her is to keep a toe in both wings by not endorsing.
For her
Not for the movement.
Should have bolded her --
often I assume that what I've written is clear enough but apparently too often it's not.
wait and see which way the wind blows
windsock watching her options
ohmygosh ...
does conservative pay out better
than progressive nudges?
she need to go back to her okie roots to figure
that one out
question everything
Exactly. Refuses to choose a side based on ethics. Instead she
tries to play both sides, and blows it. Her ex-Obama and Hillary strategists will probably guide her straight to the bottom of a latrine pit.
Warren went after Biden two days ago
And said that we can't afford to go back with his policies. I posted the tweet in the evening blues. EBs.
Scientists are concerned that conspiracy theories may die out if they keep coming true at the current alarming rate.
And Biden tweeted about Warren
and concluded "we need you in the Senate."
So it's doubtful she has a VP offer from him, which makes sense since he's already made it pretty clear that he's interested in a WOC to fill that position.
She also gave some hints that rubbed me the wrong way during her press conference. Maybe I'm wrong in intrepreting them as being negative towards Bernie. Maybe not. We'll see. I figure I've given her enought benefit of the doubt already. And the longer she takes to make up her mind (if it actually isn't made up already), the more she hurts Bernie and helps Biden.
My guess is that she will endorse Biden on Monday to fill up the news cycle the day before Michigan, et al. I hope I'm wrong.
I'm guessing you didn't watch the video?
Please do and then say something that my first comment is about.
Scientists are concerned that conspiracy theories may die out if they keep coming true at the current alarming rate.
We here know she's not a progressive,
but doubt most of those that voted for her know that.
I agree, Marie
I just keep giving her the benefit of what little doubt I've ever had about her since she didn't endorse Bernie in 2016. My patience has pretty much run out.
She's taking Bernie to task over Bernie bro's bad behavior
on Maddow interview now.
I guess that is the beginning

Sujective and theatre view, she lied after Maddow's super-pac
question, even Maddow lifted her head back in query, but changed the subject immediately.
Read today that a survey demonstrated her voters would give a ten percent edge to Bernie over Biden or about an even split as to where her voters go; not really trusting such quickly compiled data. Bernie's going to Michigan giving up the black southern block in Mississippi, good move, imo.
Wish i could trust Warren, but, i can't.
How many times have my hopes been crushed
in my life between politicians I've supported or expected more from and sports teams for which I've rooted? Yea, and people, too.
At any rate, Warren is merely a distraction at this point. An annoying footnote to history.
I'm gonna have to spend some time today revisiting Buddhist writings on suffering.
Maybe when I was younger, suffering made me persevere a la Nietzsche's "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." Now as I'm approaching my twilight years, not so much.
It's more and more a grind. But grind we must. At least as long as we can still maintain an ember of hope, however and wherever it's situated.
Totally agree. A so-called analyst on MSDNC
said this evening that (the bulk of) Warren's voters (demographically) are not the ones likely to vote for Bernie. (Except, the most progressive ones.)
So, his advice was for Bernie to concentrate on garnering vote of working class white men in the rust belt states, especially, Michigan.
Could be that Warren would prefer to endorse Bernie, but, between pressure from the DP Establishment (if there is any), and, possibly, from her state's electorate (since Biden won the most delegates in Mass, IIRC)--perhaps she doesn't feel that she can endorse him, without suffering major political blowback. I'm wondering if she'll even run again, after such a poor showing in her own state.
Since she and Bernie pledged not to go after each other (initially), maybe she'll just sit on the sidelines for most of the primary contest. At least, until the convention. Not sure when she's able to transfer her delegates to another candidate. (Is it at the convention?)

Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
Technically, I don't think a candidate
can transfer his/her pledged delegates. They can endorse another candidate and release their delegates but then their delegates are sort of free agents. They can vote for any candidate whose name has been placed in nomination, including the one that released them. Not that it matters as the candidate entering the convention with the most delegates almost always has become the nominee on the first ballot.

Late to the Party, but, good evening, Magi--
'congrats' on your success in California. No small feat.
Hope you don't feel real discouraged, since, for the most part, the primary has just begun. I could be wrong, but, strongly suspect that last Tuesday was just a fluke. Have to imagine that Uncle Joe was/is every bit as astounded as the rest of us are.
To some extent, it wasn't much of a surprise to some of us (who live in the Deep and/or MidSouth) that so many of the states with very large AA populations went for Joe--mostly, out of loyalty to 'O.' (IMO) Having said that, I figure (and hope) that the next round of elections will turn out quite differently. Anyhoo, best of luck!
Take care.
