Welcome to Saturday ...
~ Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance:
The weight of the world
is love.
Under the burden
of solitude,
under the burden
of dissatisfaction
the weight,
the weight we carry
is love.
Who can deny?
In dreams
it touches
the body,
in thought
constructs
a miracle,
in imagination
anguishes
till born
in human—
looks out of the heart
burning with purity—
for the burden of life
is love,
but we carry the weight
wearily,
and so must rest
in the arms of love
at last,
must rest in the arms
of love.
No rest
without love,
no sleep
without dreams
of love—
be mad or chill
obsessed with angels
or machines,
the final wish
is love
—cannot be bitter,
cannot deny,
cannot withhold
if denied:
the weight is too heavy
—must give
for no return
as thought
is given
in solitude
in all the excellence
of its excess.
The warm bodies
shine together
in the darkness,
the hand moves
to the center
of the flesh,
the skin trembles
in happiness
and the soul comes
joyful to the eye—
yes, yes,
that's what
I wanted,
I always wanted,
I always wanted,
to return
to the body
where I was born.
~ Alen Ginsberg

Mind has no matter or energy but they can't escape its predominance over everything they do. Logic exists in the mind. numbers exist only in the mind. I don't get upset when scientists say that ghosts exist in the mind. it's that only that gets me. science is only in your mind too, it's just that that doesn't make it bad. or ghosts either."
Laws of nature are human inventions, like ghosts. Law of logic, of mathematics are also human inventions, like ghosts."
...we see what we see because these ghosts show it to us, ghosts of Moses and Christ and the Buddha, and Plato, and Descartes, and Rousseau and Jefferson and Lincoln, on and on and on. Isaac Newton is a very good ghost. One of the best. Your common sense is nothing more than the voices of thousands and thousands of these ghosts from the past.”

Good morning, RA, OPOL, friend to all, sits
on our hearts this week. Thank you.
el has a wonderful tribute here on the DFH group: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/10/4/1890182/-RIP-OPOL#comment_751...
i've taken the liberty in copying the words of Randy's brother Ron Stonebear Shields
What a beautiful
and well deserved tribute to this wonderful man. He was one of my heroes.

What a beautiful tribute from OPOL's brother.
Thank you for including it here.
Thank you Smiley
For including the details of what sounded like an extraordinary service for an extraordinary soul. Sad and sweet, saying goodbye to the ones we love changes us in ways we never anticipate. As it should be. We travel this earth together with a circle of friends and family surrounding us. It was an honor to take a peek inside Randy's circle, and to honor his life and those he left behind.

Mornin' Anja,
Your words give comfort to all this morning, thank you.
A belated congratulations, hope you've treated yourself to a splurge. Been dealing with severe headaches this week which seems to have melted away this morning, hoping it stays that way.
OPOL'S readership was wide and it's been wonderful to read so many of the tributes to him on the internet.
Glad to hear you're feeling better
I am a headache sufferer too. Used to get migraines years ago, but curiously, they went away. These days I suffer from sinus headaches when the weather changes. I find putting an ice pack on my head helps relieve the pressure when they are very painful. Apparently the cold constricts blood vessels and helps reduce the neurotransmission of pain to the brain. A piece of advice I got from a doctor many years ago that has become my go-to remedy for headaches.
Yes, I did splurge, but not with food. Got a wonderful massage yesterday, and boy did I need it! I'll tell you, if I had the money, I'd get one every week! Wonderful way to pamper oneself!

OPOL Obituary
Elena posted a video of some kossaks at one of their gatherings too with lots of old folks gone but not forgotten.
It was a great essay by EL
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.
~Hannah Arendt
Thank you, snoopy,
for posting the news, too. Been fighting headaches and not commenting much. Lots of old-timers returned to kos to share their respects.
Yes it was great to see lots of old timers again
come to pay their respects to OPOL. I have been reading his essays over there. He wrote with so much passion and brilliance.
Here is the video Elena posted.
Sorry to hear about your headaches. Have you tried a warm towel at the base of your neck? This seems to help me with mine. Feel better smiley.

We're All Feelin' Our Mortality This Week
It's been a tough past few days. Peace to all especially all OPOL's family, freinds and admirers.
Life goes on.
Mornin' Wally, :)
PS, Wally,
Yes, Sanders knows.
I had just one contact with OPOL
He had asked us to help a friend of his, John Pine.
He took the time to write me, and I am grateful to have met him that way.

Mornin' and thank you, irishking,
for the beautiful Art Pepper.
Good morning all
Finally a little break in the heat today. And at last they are calling for rain on Monday.
Ran into the judge at Trade Day. He told me he has been thinking about me the last couple of weeks. Several years ago I had suggested to him that worrying about politics was moot compared to the coming disaster of climate collapse. He told me today those words had been echoing in his mind this week of almost 100 degree temps so late into the year. Hottest September on record.
Thanks for the OT smiley. I loved OPOL's brothers story of his funeral. I find myself singing at more and more of them. You really have to stiffen your spine to sing for those your are close to without tearing up and choking down. I have to put my mind in a different place to make it through some of them. One thing to realize is you're sad because of YOUR loss not the person who has moved on to wherever who has now lost their pain and laid down their struggles.
I once knew Jessica Mitford (Decca). She wrote an interesting book, "An American Way of Death". OPOL was wise to create his green funeral. I've been to a couple of them, but they used a home made pine box rather than the shroud.
I leave you with one of my favorite OPOL pictures ...

Mornin' Lookout,
Rain on the way, Monday, will be a relief from the heat.
So many friends have walked on, gives one pause at times.
Still in Knoxville, until mid-week, most likely, son and me plan to go fishing on Monday, but the rain may be too heavy.
Sure you need the rain, hoping it's a saturating one for your mountain.
meanwhile, we're drowning here in the upper midwest,
and i just flipped on the furnace for the first time since april.

6.5 inches in the last 2 weeks,
and it just started pouring an hour ago, we'll get at least a half an inch today, and probably another half later in the week.
Nothing like last year, when we got 8 inches in one day, but still a lot of water, following up on a very wet spring and summer. Normally, we'd get about 20 inches from April through September, this year it was about 30 -- and due to a 3-inch rainfall earlier this week, we exceeded our October average 3 days into the month.

That's our winter experience in 2019
We started summer in surplus. We've lost much of the temperature differential between the arctic and equator and the jet stream has lost its strength. So plan on more cycles of drought and flood. We've baked it into the cake so to speak.

Good Morning
Thank you smiley, for this extraordinarily moving tribute to OPOL, and to the spirit that grows strong with love and benevolence.
The words, the thoughts expressed, the music and the images are a work of art and love. Thank you again.
Love and respect to you.
Mornin' janis,
Your kindness radiates across this globe like rays of sunshine greeting the morning; so fortunate to have you here in friendship.
; )
Good morning smiley. Thanks for this great and timely
column. There's a ghost of OPOL roaming the twisted halls of TOP, but it is not the ghost of the OPOL who posted there, the one they drove out, willingly and with malice aforethought for contesting the mandated narrative and candidate support manufacturing algorithm that was placed in force. That period of time and that activity is now retroactively erased from memory except among the more self aware.
It's time to head out to ur farmers' market, thanks again and have a great one.

Mornin' el,
Thank you for the wonderful DFH group tribute.
By my math, about a thousand folks recommended tributes to OPOL on TOP; that's poetic justice.
A belated thank you for the sourdough recipe, as soon as i get a starter going, i'm going to follow it.
I thank you as well, Smiley . . .
For the OPOL tribute. He will be missed. A kind soul who responded graciously to pretty much every comment posted to his essays. One of those authors you felt you were inside his writings.

Good day, Marilyn
The best in many ways, may peace be with us all.
Always took the time to say “’preciate it” to folk who commented
That was OPOL.
I just can't do the zen thing.
Gravity existed before any of us were here to name it, and if it hadn't, none of us would ever have been here to name anything at all. I believe in the manifestness of physical reality entirely outside of human -- or any other -- consciousness.

Afternoon UR,
Hoping the rain relents for you folks, weird weather patterns impacting us all, it appears.
Good afternoon smiley,
thank you for putting this Saturday morning OT together.
Many have had the opportunity to see how beautiful life can be on this planet. Many have not had that opportunity. OPOL saw the injustice in that. The passion, the concern, the sense of justice that it takes to show, in words, a vision of a better world, is a gift to all of us. I have to love people who try and show us a better way, a different path, and try so hard to take us down that path with them.
Hope your fishing trip isn't rained out and that your cool front drops in.
Afternoon randtntx,
Glad folks here got to read Randy's brother's beautiful words. We all do walk this road together.
Love Aoife O'Donovan's voice and music, thank you.
Such a beautiful song.
(For those of us here not of Irish descent: Aoife is pronouced "EE-fah.")
OT: I once registered for an Irish language class and gave up after the first one.
'tangenting' a little,
but, randntx and QMS got me off to autoplaying from their selections and i've stopped to look for this one in response
More "EE-fah." a favorite.
<3
And ... for those not familiar with John Hiatt
I've had the pleasure of seeing John live. Goosebumps.
More 'tangenting'
One more for OPOL
And for all of us.
Very sweet, Eagles
Looks and sounds like a very beautiful group.
Wonderful music
Don't blame you!
"I once registered for an Irish language class and gave up after the first one."
Learning a new language is difficult enough, but a new language that is related to your mother tongue and completely unintelligible must be doubly difficult.
Dropping in late,
But just wanted to add my gratitude for sharing the words of OPOL's brother. He, too, sounds like a remarkable human being and it's clear that Randy will live on in him. A remarkable gift to leave behind.
I loved reading about his service and burial; while I never met OPOL nor knew him beyond his writings, it seems remarkably fitting.
Life, indeed, does march on. For as long as we're here in it, let's carry OPOL's spirit along with us.
Peace out.
Afternoon Eagles92,
OPOL, like Frodo, lives, indeed.
Peace.
Such fantastic music
What was that 'come to jesus' drug
OPOL spoke so highly of? Reading a book now that calls it the Leonardo high. Makes one brilliant for a limited duration, but exacts a heavy cost on longevity.
Taking the express train, swiftest way to get outta here.
Thanks Smiley for sharing.

Did i miss one?

What a great version of such a great song. Thanks for that.

Been waiting for a prompt to play this all day.
Never, ever, too late for Richie Havens
Somehow, in my mind, Richie and OPOL are related. Thank you for that utterly dynamic Richie Havens.
