Poor Peoples Campaign in DC today
I had hoped to be in DC today, but here's the next best thing. Our bus broke down before it arrived for us to load up. Of course that's much better than breaking down on the way...or the way back. Perhaps I saw more of the event from home online. It lasts three hours hours. I know that's too long for most folks. Just catch Rev. Barbers speech at 1 hour 20 minutes to get the gist. I'm curious if you think this is the movement we've been hoping for. It inspires me.

It might be a "Top
Down" corporate-sponsored affair, but it sure beats doing nothing! By a bunch! Most activity has happened in state capitols, so I'm excited to see if the PPC wave rolls thru the 'cuse (Syracuse) - a little closer to home. And, if the "other" Philly-based PPC rolls thru town I'll jump on that bandwagon too.

Ford is the big
sponsor. I don't know if that's Ford Motor Co. or Ford Foundation or some other Ford. And couldn't care less. As I said, I don't care who sponsors it if it gets people in the street. It's all the same to me. I just mentioned it becuz I mentioned that PPC was considered "by some" to be a top down movement becuz of said corporate sponsorship. Me, I couldn't care less. anyone who will listen to the rally will see the energy and power that is rising. Now will it accomplish anything? I don't know. The next phase involves teach-ins and voter registration. I'm all for teach-ins and in Alabama they've made it difficult for black folk to get registered. They closed down most all the license offices in the black belt in an effort to limit the vote. It was the black folk that got Doug Jones elected over a pedophile nut job - but he's voted with the rethugs thinking that will get him re-elected...what a moron. I hope that enough people will hear his words and join the fight. Something has to happen to get people to wake up and see what the government is doing to us and how they have been doing it through many presidents regardless of what their party. I actually thought that the tax bill would have started it, but sadly no ... and too many people are in favor of immigrant children being separated from their parents. I have no words for those people. It's just sad that they don't see immigrants as people.

Rev. Barber called for a day to "shut it down!". I think we are working toward a general strike. I hope so. I've lived in Alabama most of my life. I've experienced the struggle most of my life. I find this hopeful. Will the people join? We'll have to see...

I take any poor people campaign no matter where and when. It helps so much to not give up on the strength of the American poor people, the largest majority that can beat any thing and push out from the bottom the TPTB at the tiny top. Hopefully, I am seldom the praying woman, but when it comes to Americans poor and their sufferings I end up praying.
The poor people movement hopefully leads to a Poor People Party, a third party in the real sense of what a real social democracy should stand for. A third party, who will change the political system, the electoral and campaign process. I miss specifics in the speeches about that. The movement is too moral it seems to me and lacking in specific subjects.
I understand the cynicism of many here who might not believe in the power of such a movement. But I have to say, after I have made the roller coaster ride to confront myself with my home country Germany I only end up having all the respect I can muster for the continued activism of people who don't give up to speak up and shout out in the US to make their problems known to the world. Of course, you don't hear anything about it over here.
I can't help to have my own cynicism to deal with. The event the video shows remembers me much of what I have seen in DC before. I do recognize some people. But it is hard to realize that we have seen this before and it didn't lead to something so far. When will the words turn into legislative deeds to represent their meaning?
It can't be to soon. Of course I would march with them, even if I would be critical of some of the things said or done. Before you don't engage for anything, I rather engage in something, no matter how many flaws there might be.
I pretty much lost my mind, watching through the German lens over to what I consider my old stomping grounds in DC. It is very hard to bridge the deep rifts between cultures. You learn how deep the differences are and knowing both sides makes me crazy and a very bad person. I hope I will find ways out of it.

Although I wasn't in DC today, the internet (which as you often point out has problems), allowed me to be there. It allows us to be friends though we've never met...and I feel we are connected.
This is an opportunity. I hope it catches on fire and spreads faster than Bernie's campaign.
Here in Alabama, we face great challenges, and have for a long time. This movement offers hope. I'm throwing in and plan to keep contributing to what I see as our best effort now.
It was international in scope and may reach to Germany too. Another way we can be connected. Forward...not one step back!

Bezos started the year with $100 billion to his name and last report I saw is he now has $142 billion. In a country that has this much poverty it's obscene that he is allowed to have that much money.
Seattle wanted to place a head tax on Amazon and Starbucks to go to funding for the homeless. They both threatened to move out of state if that went through. The city council folded. It'd be one thing if he was paying his workers a living wage, it's enough that he isn't.
Plus Amazon made over $4 billion in profits if not much more, but it paid no taxes on it and even got almost $1 billion in tax return.
The republicans are ramping up their war on the poor by cutting $19 billion from the food stamps program. And Trump is trying to do some magic tricks with all of the departments that help the poor in order to eliminate them completely. Good bye food stamps, utility help during the winter, HUD housing, etc, etc, .....
Trumps supporters will be in for a surprise when they see their grandparents being kicked out of nursing homes across the country.

for it. Especially when his employees work in such heinous conditions. Instead of putting in air conditioning he has ambulances on stand by to take them to the hospital. I wonder who has to pay the hospital bill? Him or does he make them enter into workers comp Hell where his doctors that he pays will say that there was nothing wrong with them. That's good. Tactics? Well, that's what's harder to discuss. I read their agenda, didn't listen to the speech. The agenda itself sounds like a political party platform except it's filled with demands instead of planks with explanations as to why they're making those demands.
They make a big deal out of voting, the first section of their agenda is about voting rights, similar to the sixties voting rights efforts for blacks.
•We demand the immediate full restoration and expansion of the Voting Rights Act, an end to racist gerrymandering and redistricting, early registration of 17 and 18 year olds, the implementation of automatic registration to vote at the age of 18, early voting in every state, same-day registration, the enactment of Election Day as a holiday, and a verifiable paper record. We demand the right to vote for the formerly incarcerated.
•We demand the reversal of state laws preempting local governments from passing minimum wage increases, and the removal of Emergency Financial Management positions that are unaccountable to the democratic process.

Then they list the demands, such as
•We demand the immediate implementation of federal and state living wage laws that are commensurate for the 21st century economy, guaranteed annual incomes, full employment and the right for all workers to form and join unions.
•We demand an end to anti-union and anti-workers’ rights laws in the states.

The problematic issue I see involves the agenda behind their voting push, i.e., are they trying to funnel people into voting for the democratic party and basically make this an effort against Trump and the republicans.
Seems like an effort very well suited for a third party push or a movement independent from the election system if that's the way they go. If they don't, it will die with the duopoly. They seem to be relying on trying to effect change by voting within the current system.

(or the duopoly parties). It's the same situation as with Bernie Sanders, if they can manage to operate outside the duopoly, actually form a new political party or join a current third political party like the Green Party, then maybe we can get somewhere. I still think that the only way that we can change the country's
direction is not going to be through protests, but work stoppages. Look at how many teachers went on strike, but only got a few of their demands. Then it was on to the next strike and same outcome. But what if those teachers had all gone out on strike together and others joined them? This would have brought the education system to a halt. Add in the other groups that strike now and again, but don't get anywhere.
We've seen how well protests worked during OWS, BLM and DAPL. The cop thugs came out in force and brutally broke them up. This was because there were more cops with weapons than peaceful protesters. There has to be many more of us than them. And then there has to be a way to keep the cop instigaters out of them.

Dore interview with Lauren Steiner (PPC)
Lauren discusses her arrest this week at the CA Statehouse. She was live streaming other PPC activists protesting at the statehouse. She was standing alone video recording on the opposite balcony from the protesters and a cop comes up to her and arrests her for "unlawful assembly". It was a pretty good interview including video footage of cops acting like Nazi Fascists. Steiner said she was also going to the DC protest.

In Kentucky, he left a bible for the legislators who wouldn't allow the PPC into the capitol building. I would have felt a lot better if he had left copies of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

the rally starts with first nations song and prayer and declaration of genocide. There are Islamic folks, Jewish, and many others including atheist. Listen for yourself.
It is a moral movement and he calls out false preachers. Sounds like you are uncomfortable with the religious aspect. I'm not religious, but I'm comfortable with the idea of a moral society.
Al didn't listen either, and he's convinced Dr Barber wants to sheepdog us into the dem corral. Wrong. He calls out corporate dems as well as preachers. His speech is 15-20 min and starts about 1 hour 20 min in...if you really want to learn what the campaign is about.
As I often say, perfection is not a human condition. The main complaint in the article you site is that it is ineffective to call people immoral if you want to work with them...I think the idea is to remove those who are immoral (like the Boltons and Cheneys). However, you will notice it is issues which are addressed not individuals. If you listen to the entire rally there are many references to capitalism as a root cause.
Like Bernie's campaign, there is excitement. It has only begun.

Barber thinks the bible is a guide to morality.
I find that book and the concepts of god, jesus and salvation to be disturbing and divisive. Thus I do not find Barber attractive as a leader of a movement that should be based on the premises of humanism instead of Christianity. We always pay a price when we mix religion into politics.

I've listened to Barber before
and that is when I started to get uncomfortable.
Here's the problem. We have a massive infusion of Christians running amok in our government now. And while most people think it's all the fault of the Republicans, it is also due in large part to the Democrats (look up Nancy Pelosi and the Faith Democrats) and Barack Obama (who also had evangelicals lay hands on him in the Oval Office and participated in prayers there). The only way we are going to reverse this dangerous path we are walking on called theocracy is to remind the American people that it is the Constitution and the Bill of Rights that should be referred to for ALL issues of our society and democracy. NOT THE BIBLE.
Barber is an MLK knock off wanna be. I don't trust his motives and I think people are hanging their hats on something that will further erode separation of church and state (there is not much of a wall left).
And may I remind you that Jesus used slavery as a metaphor for man's relationship to god. I don't find that kind of thinking conducive to solving the issues of poverty or racism or anything much else. The bible is NOT a guide to morality, and certainly not something we should look to as a standard. Barber left that bible in KY as a message to legislators.... to me it clinched my reasons for being uncomfortable with his rise in power. I have no interest in a theocracy. We've tried it before. They called it the dark ages.
I don't see this as a christian movement, but a moral one. Yes, it is being led by a christian. You of course must be true to yourself and your perceptions and act as you see best...as I must....and as Dr Barber must.
