A chilly start to a lovely day here. Good thing we resolved the Civil War, although many still hold grudges. Down here a Yankee is someone from the north. A damn Yankee is someone from the north who has moved to the south.
To my mind there is a larger divide between rural and urban life than N vs S. When I go North I'm always treated well. My accent is considered a novelty, and people are hospitable.
My question is, "Is another Civil War brewing?"
Let's hope not...

A mind that does not detest bad government is foolish.
China's latest move in the trade war has been to increase their tariffs to 84% on US goods. I'm sure that Trump will respond- I'm just not sure if he'll go to 200%, 500%, or 1000%. He clearly has no idea whatsoever what he is doing, but he'll certainly do the hell out of it.
The morning amusement comes from 0H, as usual:
“Were I a foreign manufacturer, I’d wager this policy will be reversed at least by 2028 when a new president is elected – or big business puts out a hit on Trump, because they’ll tolerate anything but the devaluing of their stock price. The next gun that fires at the president will probably be made in America”
And on edit- apparently, he just raised the tariffs to only 125% on China, but "paused" the increased tariffs on everyone else for 90 days, and just did 10%. Or something. Or not. The US tariff policy is a complete shambles, as are many of the companies trying to cope with this insanity.
So NAFTA didn’t start the end of American manufacturing because it was already happening? Okay. But it didn’t help. There is no way American businesses are going to spend money to bring their companies back to America. Not with Trump being so wishy washy.
But could this just be more of the plan that you will own nothing?

You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I won't have it!! Is that clear?! You think you've merely stopped a business deal. That is not the case. The Arabs have taken billions of dollars out of this country, and now they must put it back! It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity! It is ecological balance!
You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations. There are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds, and shekels.
It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today! And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and YOU WILL ATONE!
Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale?
You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen and howl about America and democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon Meta and Mobil and Microsoft and Google and Goldman Sachs and Amazon and Apple. Those are the nations of the world today.
What do you think the Russians talk about in their councils of state — Karl Marx Peter the Great? They get out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories, minimax solutions, and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments, just like we do.
We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies, Mr. Beale. The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable bylaws of business. The world is a business, Mr. Beale. It has been since man crawled out of the slime. And our children will live, Mr. Beale, to see that perfect world in which there's no war or famine, oppression or brutality — one vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock, all necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized, all boredom amused.

This is utter bullshit. But oh-so-typical for Twitter/X: disinformation + misinformation. @IndoPac_Info should not be taken seriously by anyone. https://t.co/TjEVVsTvOj
Indo-Pacific command on Twitter X uploaded the article in full, written by someone formerly a spokesperson for right wing parties in S.Korea. Here's the link:
As TK points out in his latest weekly update on South Korean politics on his web site The Blue Roof, the US policy establishment has proven itself consistently wrong assessing the Yoon administration, intentionally overlooking his authoritarian policies both as a president and previously as prosecutor general. I would argue further that Yoon's corruption and lack of adherence to the rule of law and democratic values goes back a lot further than that. In order to serve its own interests the US overlooked the risks of having another dictator in South Korea.
Contrary to the thrust of Asia Times critique of Lee Jae-myung, potentially, as South Korea's next president, Lee publicly declared himself as a "conservative centrist." Arguably he is to the right of Moon Jae-in as a democrat, because he supported tax relief on increased real estate valuations, and also on financial market transactions, to ease the financial stress caused by a slumping economy during covid and continuing during the Yoon administration. Lee is pragmatic, having been a long time supporter of government subsidies to small vendors suffering during he lagging economy. Whether he will be slavishly subservient to the views of Colby and INDOPACCOM that S.Korea should serve as a forward base for US operations against China, is something that is just not what USFK or the CFC were designed for. Colby also has a "you're on your own" attitude when it comes to North Korea, and maybe you ought to getya some nuclear weapons. At the same time, they should provide support for a war with China over Taiwan? Doesn't sound well thought out to me.
Lee's emergence as a likely prospect for president after Yoon's dismissal from office, is a change of pace from the international drift to authoritarian rule in other so called "democracies."

We're all better off. The Asia Times article says:
The Constitutional Court’s finalization of the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on April 4 has sent shockwaves through the Korean Peninsula and beyond.
This is completely wrong. It was Yoon's attempted coup that sent shock waves internationally. His prior moves against North Korea were increasing military tension in northeast Asia. When the constitutional court dismissed Yoon from office, a sigh of relief went through the Korea peninsula.
....when you came here — and told it in such a compelling way. So this is a completion for you. And a desirable ending.
However, the Korea story also brought so much dimension to the clash of Empires that is unfolding in the Asia Pacific. I think South Korea's story has influenced both Taiwan and Japan. In positive ways.

I was sooo anticipating a spectacular, direct cause and effect, economic collapse.
Oh, the economy will still collapse due to insane tax cuts for billionaires, and absurd wars started by a dying empire. All of them useless defeats. But it will collapse with less cowbell.

Pin pointing the collapse on an event is a no-brain-er, whereas the tax cuts for the rich are a bit slower, and we have lots of poor and middle class people who still believe in the trickle down theory.

I have no details, except it was a proposed three-month pause. However, it just seems like the kind of chickenshit that comes out this nation's government. So it had the ring of truth.
Yes. There are different timelines for the direct causes of the collapse. This can muddy the water. The tax cuts and the neocon wars are on the same timeline, They are both the stuff of a failed state. The tariffs were the insane raving of a risk-taking psychopath. All of it comes from the tormented fever dreams of MAGA, unwilling to grasp reality.

I also read that Trump has threatened Iran with "nuclear heat" if they do not stop using nuclear plants and disarm themselves.
Iran has the choice of being nuked by us or being annihilated by Israel.
It sucks to be Iran.
If they didn't have oil and rare earth minerals, we wouldn't see them as a threat to our national security, or something like that.
Also, Iran is just in a bad geographical location, being close to Israel.

Iran could have developed nuclear weapons ten time over in the past 40 years — if they had wanted them. It's not THAT hard to slap one together. The entire scenario is completely absurd.
And now that Iran has hypersonic missiles, they don't need ballistic missiles at all to gain air superiority in the region. Another inconvenient reality.
But, Iran is the designated paranoid delusion of Israel, and there's nothing they can do about it.
Ironically, there are more Jews living in Iran than in Israel, until very recently in Biblical years.
