Schumer Agrees to Give up Shutdown Fights for Two Years, in Deal That Would Deprive Senate Democrats of Power

Senate Democrats look poised to relinquish significant leverage -- the threat of withholding government funding -- well into the next Congress.

After Obama was elected the republicans said that they would do everything in their power to make him a one term president. There was no bipartisanship during his entire tenure.

"After months of legislative logjams, this budget deal is a genuine breakthrough," said Chuck Schumer (D-NY) from the Senate floor. "After months of fiscal brinkmanship, this budget deal is the real first sprout of bipartisanship, and it should break the long cycle of spending crises that have snarled this Congress and hampered the middle class."

But what about the Resistance? Haven't the democrats spent the last year telling us how Trump can't be trusted?

It would also deprive Senate Democrats of a tool they could use to stymie the Trump administration, which has been plagued by repeated accusations of Executive Branch abuses, including unprecedented nepotism and conflicts of interest, and obstruction of justice in the FBI inquiry into alleged election meddling in 2016. Republicans have the majority in both houses of Congress, but need Senate Democrats to guarantee that budget legislation won't be filibustered.

So is it now time to give up on the democrats?

Apparently not.

You are Correct! The Answer is not quitting the Democratic party the answer is to get active and take over the Party FOR US! #Bernie2020

the answer is to vote... something most of us do not participate in

Absolutely. The whiners need to stop it. Either vote or be satisfied with the results.

Sigh

both parties have been purchased and will submit. We serfs better accept our neofuedalistic future.

No objection to an increase in military funding - both parties are compliant with the MIC...not to sell dreamers short, but I thought a shut down over an increased military budget or over the tax bill much more appropriate. It is all kabuki theater anyway.

And they’ll get away with it too because the MSM won’t report this for what it is, if they report it at all. But we’ll still get tons of Trump bad/RUSSIARUSSIARUSSIA/mean old Republicans, etc. Dead on the money, the Republicans actually resisted PBO, not that they even needed to. If the Dems gave half a damn about their base...ugh. I can’t even finish.

Around ninety-some million eligible voters voters didn’t feel compelled to sign up vote in the last election. For whatever reason. Here’s a pretty good breakdown of 2016 voting demographics. (I did look and these numbers do correlate with the numbers being reported on the US Census Bureau’s site.)

2016 November General Election : Turnout Rates
Mhittp://www.electproject.org/2016g

Here are the Census Bureau’s figures:

Table 2. Reported Voting and Registration, by Race, Hispanic Origin, Sex, and Age, for the United States: November 2016
(In thousands)
https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/cps/tables/p20/580/table02_1.xls

(The first one makes for a good study in voting trends through several primaries and general elections. The second backs up the 2016 results.)

The Dims need to look at the numbers from The Empty Suits elections. They keep placing the blame on white-suprematism and Bernie Bros and Bitches. The fools refuse to face the fact that they are LOSING voters that they historically could rely on. The only racial demographic that actually improved was among Hispanic voters. And it isn’t helping them that millions of new (young) voters don’t care for their politics either. I guess what I’m trying to say is that they are throwing away what they HAD, and are repellling what they COULD HAVE. Does that make sense?

No matter how hard they pander, everyday it’s something new with Al From/Bill Clinton’s Koch-Brothers-funded Corporatist Turd Way Neo-Liberal ‘New’ Democratic Party. They will never acknowledge that they are not a political party, they are a club that requires dues and fealty but for the 99% of its ‘members’ it bestows no rights or privileges. (See video below.)

This whole mess started off with them running one of the most unpopular and distrusted candidates in party history. Her unfavorables were down there in the sewer with the buffoon who did win. Then there was all the lies and cheating (most of us knew what was going on when we finally saw the debate schedule and then there was the database kerfluffle). That stuff there was a real ‘turn off’ as was said way back when. AND EVER SINCE it’s been one revelation after another. Each one worse than before. We are now hearing how they tried to delegitimize an elected president with lies, spying - involving several government agencies and the Obama Administration - and various and sundry corrupt government officials.

That kind of behavior is the source of all their problems and all the finger wagging, pandering, or plain outright bullshit in the world does not inspire confidence or trust or a desire to support. The only humorous (?) thing about all this is the Turd Way came into power with one Clinton and they’re going losing it all because of another Clinton.

Oh, and as for Chuckie, obviously he’s still looking for those two disaffected Republican votes for every one ‘Democratic’ vote they lose.

Democrats' 'Resistance' to Trump Is Eroding, and So Are Their Poll Numbers

And yet, today, in the highest circles of Democratic party politics, resistance is waning. “This is normal enough,” many key Democrats seem to be saying. When Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote in advance of Trump’s State of the Union several weeks ago, he focused on finding ways to “work with” the president, such as infrastructure.

Bipartisan rhetoric is nothing new from politicians, but Democrats appear to be slipping towards making substantive policy concessions to Trump. Particularly in the Senate, Democrats have, bit by bit, begun acceding to Trumpian demands. Their attempted shutdown failed after less than three days, as many in the party pushed for a more conciliatory approach.

The outcome of any final immigration deal is unknown, in part because Democrats voluntarily relinquished much of their leverage by striking a bargain on the budget. But there can be little doubt that many in the party were prepared to make serious—and politically unpopular—policy concessions to Trump. At one point, that reportedly included funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border (opposed by 60 percent of Americans). As it stands, Democrats in both houses appear to be on the brink of dropping demands to protect the “Dreamers,” undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children (protections that are supported by 74 percent of Americans). “He’s not asking for the kind of money that would build a wall sea to shining sea,” reasoned Missouri’s Claire McCaskill. “He’s asking for the kind of money that can say he built a wall.”

Whatever the outcome, the course of these negotiations demonstrates the erosion of the idea that Trump constitutes a crisis in American governance—that he should be treated differently than any other president. And the same change can be found inching into other Democratic rhetoric. For instance, a recent New York Times interview with former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick and Democratic strategist Joe Trippi (entitled “Enough Trump Bashing, Democrats”) emphasized the dangers of overreach, stridency, and partisanship. “We need to focus less on what’s wrong with Trump and the Republicans and more on what’s right with us,” said Patrick. With Trump calling for an infrastructure bill—the holy grail of performative bipartisanship—the pressure for moderate Democrats to work with Trump is likely to grow.

They are going to give Trump and the GOP every thing.

Frankly, when most Americans hear the word "Pelosi," they immediately turn off their ears. I know I do. Not only that, but it seems my body has developed some kind of anti-nausea reflex. Whenever I hear "Pelosi," I can tell my body is secreting some chemical - or something - which aids in not immediately vomiting. A type of evolution perhaps.

Luckily for me, I didn't know of Pelosi's grandstanding in FMPs until a day or so after the fact. The delay probably saved at least one lunch and one supper. That's a plus.

Clearly, the Repubs must have that majority required for the 'runaway Con Con' ALEC's been pushing so that the Trilateral Commission et al can finally rewrite that US Constitution just the way they want it. And the pay is evidently good enough for the Dems to do literally anything to help achieve this.

Assuming that we last this long, if Americans don't ensure a flood of Progs only in forthcoming elections, it seems probable that there will be no pretense of law or protection anywhere in the world in very short order - and immediately in North America. That 'piece of paper' they've been telling you is not valid because they ignore it and 'what are you going to do about it' still forms the basis of legitimate law in America - which must be grossly misinterpreted by corrupt political appointments to the Supreme Court in order to achieve their desired effects.

If Progs do not begin to fill government in this next election, even if MAD doesn't occur in the meantime, once full-blown fascist 'law' can be fully administered over an entirely subject people, we might be wishing for it.

Seemingly working toward this, banks have already been permitted to steal people's homes and can steal depositors money out of their accounts to cover shortfalls; militarized police can already shake down passers-by for their money and other property - once property rights are gone from the 'common people', what happens then?

What about the already routine police false arrests, assaults and murders of people where they know they can get away with it, when all other Constitutional rights have been written out for the Disposables encompassing the 99%?

We know what The Psychopaths That Be are and we know what they do. And they see humanity as the enemy.

Edit: do I need to point out that even if they cling to some spurious claim of 'legality' at this point, under a new corporate/billionaire-designed Constitution likely with a Coronated fascist dictator, even faked voting will not necessarily be required at that point - and that may be the Clinton's/CorpoDems promised reward for this public trashing of the chances of a possibly soon-to-be-discarded two-party voting system; being appointed as top CEOs in the rule of North America, aiming for the Earth, while deluding themselves that the rest of the world won't fight back in self-defense?

They've done this sort of takeover elsewhere, using proxies as brutal/sadistic but 'business-friendly' overlords, and with international outrage no longer a concern, anything goes, regarding their treatment of their population - as will life on the planet go in any scenario where TPTB are not contained.

If you don't think this could possibly happen to your democracy, so believed a number of other peoples in other countries where it did, and the preparations do seem to be lining up for this to be enacted in America, after the next election, the arranged majority for that long-sought Constitutional rewrite, subjugating their population before they are ready to start mass-nuking the rest of the world capable of fighting back - and thereby ensuring the end of all planetary life.

This is not 'politics', this is a lunatic fascist coup nearing completion. And there is nowhere to go to be safe from it.

I'm afraid so; means we have no time to waste, maybe none at all, with TPTB so determined to set off MAD, the censorship and propaganda mill working overtime, and protections of all sorts being stripped so rapidly... still believe we'd have had nowhere near this much time with The Mad Bomber, though; she'd likely have started firing the nukes from that off-shore ship, as her planned fireworks display to celebrate Her Royal Coronation.

Well, on the other hand, apparently the only time one of the standard two American political parties was historically replaced was when a popular politician left and started a new party, taking with him the voters. Unfortunately, since that time virtually insurmountable roadblocks have been set up against '3rd parties' in the US... dunno, but Progs will find a way to run, if they have enough public support. Problem is, a flood is needed to wash out the Swamp enough to do any good.. But there has to be a way, because we're effectively out of time.

We'll see if this goes through, have been trying to post something all freaking day and keep getting that the site has encountered an unexpected error...
