Democratic Establishment says, 'C'mon under our big tent and get yer diminished expectations right here!'
We are in the midst of a moment in American politics where change is possible; as the success of outsider candidates makes clear, a sizable body of the people want real, substantive, paradigm-shifting (perhaps even radical by American standards) change. Given the tenacity and success of establishment candidates, you can see that there are is also a sizable body of people who oppose change that comes in large increments as either unproductive or potentially disruptive.
In the Democratic race, the positions and policies of Sanders and Clinton have been dissected, compared and contrasted - but the key debate is about the kind of change we are to have.
The change debate is the transcendent issue of this contest. The contested issue is whether the American people can demand and have implemented by their "representatives" in government wholesale change, or if they must settle for minor incremental changes described as pragmatic and "progressive" (for people who like to get things done) - because the representatives must ask the permission of the 1% before proceeding.
On the campaign trail the debate is fundamentally about expectations:
In a debate with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Senator Sanders referred to the achievements of the Nordic countries in providing such things as universal health care and free higher education as models for the United States. Secretary Clinton responded by saying, "I love Denmark, but the United States is not Denmark." What does that mean? The allusion is not to insufficient economic resources but to unrealistic political expectations. ...
The Democratic party establishment also seems to have adopted the mindset of diminished expectations. Why else, when it had the majority, did it cave in on supporting the public option when the Affordable Care Act was being debated? Why has it consigned the accomplishments of the New Deal to the dustbin of history?
Last night I ran across an excellent post by Gaius Publius over at Down with Tyranny.
The post quotes Corey Robin:
"Amid all the accusations that Hillary Clinton is not an honest or authentic politician, that she's an endless shape-shifter who says whatever works to get her to the next primary, it's important not to lose sight of the one truth she's been telling, and will continue to tell, the voters: things will not get better. Ever. At first, I thought this was just an electoral ploy against Sanders: don't listen to the guy promising the moon. No such thing as a free lunch and all that. But it goes deeper. The American ruling class has been trying to figure out for years, if not decades, how to manage decline, how to get Americans to get used to diminished expectations, how to adapt to the notion that life for the next generation will be worse than for the previous generation, and now, how to accept (as Alex Gourevitch reminded me tonight) low to zero growth rates as the new economic normal. Clinton's campaign message isn't just for Bernie voters; it's for everyone. Expect little, deserve less, ask for nothing. When the leading candidate of the more left of the two parties is saying that - and getting the majority of its voters to embrace that message - the work of the American ruling class is done."
He goes on to quote Avedon Carol:
In Germany after WWI, austerity imposed by outsiders created the conditions for fascism to grow. We knew this. We were even taught this in school. And we certainly know just how good that is for women and minorities.
But in America (and Britain), that austerity is being imposed by our own leaders, and most effectively by leaders of the Democratic Party (and Labour Party) — the supposed "left" party, the party that was understood to support working people.
Clinton, like all of the DLC, talks like this "new economy" of decline is something that just happened, like it's a natural force. They do not admit that it was a political decision to break the power of ordinary working people and put it back into the hands of the aristocracy. They pat us on the head and tell us they will try not to make it as bad as the Republicans will, but it will happen and there is nothing to be done about it.
Clinton and the vast left wing establishment do the work of the 1% (which funds their campaigns and the campaigns of their right-wing rivals) by creating both the diminished circumstances of Americans through austerity policies and the "insurmountable obstacle" to truly substantive change, fabled in Clinton's campaign rhetoric.
It's a giant non-military psy-op.
While Clinton harrumphs about Republican obstructionism, Bernie Sanders talks about mobilizing the greatest force in American politics, the force upon whose consent the whole edifice relies for legitimacy - American citizens.
Clinton's campaign is about getting people to accept the decline and manage their perceptions, expectations and demands.
Sanders' campaign is about resistance, taking back the reins of power from a corrupt establishment and the 1% that owns it.
As Gaius Publius puts it,"Both parties are giving away the store, cleaning out the cash register. ... The Democrats want to soften the blow more than the Republicans — a kinder, gentler devastation if you will. A softer crash landing. ...
That's what this election is about — on both sides. Acceptance or resistance."

Michigan gave NAFTA a big fat donut
Yes. Its NAFTA or New Deal. Michigan was a real victory in this regard. A stunning rebuke of NAFTA
23 years on. I hope it continues in Ohio and elsewhere.
afternoon jobu...
good to see you!
i think the trade issue is a key issue in the democratic campaign. in states that formerly had a significant industrial base, i think clinton is extremely vulnerable on nafta and her 47 supportive comments about tpp.
Afternoon...good to be seen!
Getting right again on trade and deregulation are IMO key to the success of our Party in general. I have railed on these issues for years over at that other place. It became crystal clear in early 2009 that Third Way was back in the drivers seat and NeoLib policies were all we could expect.
IMO, the failure to prosecute Wall Street politically and legally was a colossal failure. It allowed the TeaParty Repubs to fill the vacuum and blame Fannie and Freddie with Southern Strategy 5.0, which is irony of biblical proportions. Reaganism sowed the Trickle-Down/de-regulatory winds and Democrats reaped the electoral whirlwind of 2010 and 2014.
Of course, it was the Progressives fault. We were the 'fucking retards'.
Bernie is exposing that. The curtain is finally being pulled on the Third Way Wizards of Oz.
He is showing Democrats that Third Way policies are puppies and rainbows, not the other way around.
Hey, allow me to echo Joe's 'greeting.' Your reply, jobu,

And for whatever reason, it always made me chuckle. (I saw Ralph's face, as soon as I read your comment--which brought back many happy memories.)

a/k/a my mom says Bernie will win Ohio. I trust her on these things, she was right about Michigan. In fact, she keeps telling me to calm down, that Bernie will win. Now, I'm guilty of second-guessing my mom my whole life an when I finally stopped doing that, and really learned to trust her judgment, she calls Bernie the winner before the first primary. I have no choice to but to accept that!
I asked about Illlinois, she's not sure. But Bernie's new ad for Chicago, if you have not yet seen it, here it is: https://youtu.be/VIVypM6zcKQ looks pretty pretty pretty good!

A character reference?
Hillary Clinton is a public figure. She provides her own character reference all the time and it's there for all of us to see.
And then, of course, there's the comment stream. They make it sound like I dislike Hillary because of right wing talking points and because she's a woman. Let's not discuss things like Libya, Honduras, Iraq, the swirl of unseemly things surrounding the Clinton Foundation, her private email server, David Brock, Blue Nation Review, Henry FUCKING Kissinger, or her carrying the water for Wall Street during the Mexico "crisis".
I have come to the conclusion that if you're a Hillary supporter than reality itself is a right-wing talking point.

another way of looking at it is that this is the time when peoples' interests are aligned in a manner that will allow us to build the citizen's movement that we've always needed to take back the government no matter who is in office.
the words we choose are important
and CHANGE is a scary and often vague word. I'd use words sustainable and stability more often and I'd always try to describe the "change" . . . because George Bush certainly brought BIG change.
in fact, the language of politics would benefit if we didn't see elections as contests where people gain power and they win or they lose. In fact, we are the winners or losers, just look at Kansas and Michigan and Florida and . . .
What would happen if we replace winning and POWER with elected and service: change the language of politics to represent what we WANT from those we put in government.
This is something we can do here. Start here. See if it takes.

Agreed about "power," except
I think one of the problems among liberals and progressives over the last couple decades has been a seriously imperfect understanding of power. Like, often we don't even make a strategic or tactical analysis of a situation, but act like everything is a policy debate.
In 2011, I went to the Campaign for America's Future conference, and every panel and speech I heard there except one was about our great policy ideas and why they're better than the Republicans'. I kept thinking, well, sure, but how are we going to do anything about it? We need to talk about how we're going to make these ideas the law of the land. (Remember, this was the fall of 2011, after Obama moved the Overton window rightward by attacking Social Security and the Republicans took over both houses of Congress. We *needed* to talk about power.)
Hillary has corrupted this question into the talking point: I know how to get things done, and in her hands, this issue is a disingenuous distortion, mainly because nobody doubts her ability to get things done--for a bunch of wealthy nihilists. But the issue is still vitally important, despite her dumping her campaign garbage all over it.

well, i don't think that bernie is planning on losing, but, if he endorses clinton, it will not affect the votes of very large numbers of people.
If he throws his support to Hill, after all this
There will be no more change candidates from the Democratic party in my lifetime that elicit anything other than a disgusted snort from the American people.
One way or another, the framework of the last 35 years will end with this primary fight. The only way it can stagger on for a few more years is if Sanders loses and does absolutely nothing at all--neither throws his support to her, nor emphatically doesn't, nor does anything in a third-party or a Howard Dean sort of way.
If he loses and then simply says: I leave the choice of whom to vote for to my supporters, as a matter of individual conscience, then *maybe* the current political framework can stagger on for a few more years.
But more than likely, it's done for--for better or worse.

New Talking Point Alert
People in Jesse LaGreca's feed have been talking a lot about how there's not much difference between Bernie and Hillary. Apparently that's the direction they're going next, to try and prepare for the general, I assume?
It's obviously not for the primary, since Hillary has been trying to demonize Bernie as a Communist tyrant sympathizer down here in Florida--a pro-Castro Sandinista-lover.

What happened to Jesse? So many talented OWS folks...
I remember hearing not too long after Occupy was razed in the middle of the night by the Domestic Security Alliance that he might be getting his own tv show somewhere. At first I thought that would be great, considering how sharp and quick-witted on his feet he is and liberal in his views. But right after, I thought, this is the perfect kind of scenario in which the PTB oligarchs love to operate: in their predatory instincts basically make an offer to buy him out, by sucking him up into some party operative and giving him a chunk of money.
Then it just seemed like his views starting becoming a little more mainstream, watered-down. Think he had some personal issues to deal with at that time too, which complicated things, but still. What happened to that clear, revolutionary voice?
But yeah, seems like he's become a sad casualty of the Democratic Party machinery. Heart-breaking. I think of the many gifted people who were down at Zuccotti also and wonder what happened to them.

I know IQs are controverisal but...
someone once said something like "consider the fellow with an IQ of 99. He is the smartest one of half the population".
ha! I should have watched that Carlin video first!
He's the guy who said it! And right above here! Now I feel like I'm in the lower group.
Mark Twain, presciently anticipating statistics and
normal populations and cracked wise about the distribution of intelligence, but I cannot recall the quote at all. He may also be the one who pointed out that the president is smarter than at least of the populace, because a majority voted for him.
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
there is also
a lot of successful brainwashing going on.... been happening for decades now. I know some very intelligent people who believe things that are simply not true and its not a religion at all ... like free trade agreements enable trade... as if we didn't have trade prior to stupid vile 'agreements' that have simply destroyed jobs in the US. They believe it is all for the greater good when, in fact, in over twenty years I have yet to hear an articulate debate about its pro's and con's. All discussions have been either individuals or groups all saying the US needs it... or a much rarer event that someone who is well known has an interview with a non MSM interviewer posted on youtube saying its a bad thing ... never a debate.
IIRC a variation of this one had an
outing a few weeks ago - something along the lines that they voted the same way 93% of the time - which of course proves nothing as the 7% leaves a lot of space for massive differences.
By the same logic: IIRC human DNA is over 99% common across all individuals therefore Stalin was really no different to Gandhi
“To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” -Voltaire
that one pops up from time to time.
IIRC, 7% is about the difference between Gorillas and Humans, FWIW.
I generally avoid pie, but I almost replied to one of those comments with:
"OK, well that helps us focus the debate. Tell me about the times their votes were different."

generally speaking, analyzing a politician's performance
by looking at aggregate votes is a pretty poor way to infer much about the politician. it's rare that any individual's vote on a particular bill matters much, so any given legislator's voting history is likely to be a statistical hodgepodge of protests, panders, and other folderol. at the very least, the voting patterns will tell you more about the politician's district than about the politician.

I don't understand and really, it breaks my heart. I will say this though, if any one of those people who support the self-serving, greedy, corrupt, lying oligarchs says they're"progressive," I will punch at the air!
Sorry for the rant, I really needed to vent. Thank you my dear Joe, my birthday twin.
Some people ARE your enemies.
I'm not sure which should sadden you more -- the ones who understand that they are your enemies, or the ones who sincerely believe that they've got your best interests at heart.
The earth is a multibillion-year-old sphere.
The Nazis killed millions of Jews.
On 9/11/01 a Boeing 757 (AA77) flew into the Pentagon.
AGCC is happening.
If you cannot accept these facts, I cannot fake an interest in any of your opinions.
What's also disturbing is
What's also disturbing is that a lot of them see *us* as betraying the party. It's absolutely critical to defeat these Republican barbarians in the election to save SCOTUS, and we're voting for someone who's willing to cut off some of the party's biggest sources of funding!? They want us to wake up from our silly juvenile Bernie dreams and get with the usual program.
We've been stuck in a good cop/bad cop situation for thirty years. Vote for the nice Dem because the Rep will kill the country, but they've just been two heads of the same snake. I had such high hopes for Obama... but no, fooled again.
This time I'm not living on hope or dreams. Bernie can't pull this off by himself, and there aren't enough non-establishment Dems running for office this cycle to drive the revolution immediately. What he can do is spend two years in the bully pulpit spreading the word. The rest of us have to find other Bernies to run for offices everywhere, we have to fund them somehow - and we won't be able to take the Establishment by surprise again.
Overturning Citizens United is going to be *hard*. We'll need allies. That's why I force myself to try to understand and accept the Clinton contingent - if we can find what some of them are really looking for, if we can ease them out of the 'us versus them' mindset, we both have a far better chance of preserving our future and our kids.
How likely is it that most of the Clinton supporters really want an oligarchy?
I hate to say it but the only thing they care about is that
Hillary is a woman and she has a D next to her name. They have been so brainwashed about the Democratic Party that they don't recognize a DINO. I think we need to start asking each other....what kind of Demorat are you....an FDR Democrat or a DLC democrat(which is code for Repulican lite). Hillary will always be a Goldwater girl at heart.
afternoon angel...
a certain number of hillbots anticipate profiting from her policies, probably far more of them than actually will. the deluded ones who think that hillary is going to work in their interests are an enigma.
regarding "progressive," i think that democrats have succeeded in sucking the meaning out of the word, leaving a dessicated, amorphous lump of indeterminate word-tissue behind for people to attempt to reinflate with whatever concept they want.
