on this date, I had this jalapeno cheese baguette that had so hardened it had become a weapon. I looked in a tube, and it said if I turned on the faucet, ran the baguette under some water, then put the wetted weapon on the oven rack for 6-7 minutes at 300 degrees, it would revert back to bread. I did this, and it worked.
I am excited.
That is an interesting trick with the baguette.
We would normally chop such a loaf and put it in the bottom of bowls to be laden with really brothy soup.

My MIL taught me
the trick of raising baguettes from the dead. It's handy as I tend to impulse buy baguettes and then lose them for days as they don't fit anywhere in the kitchen at eye level.
Update on the back packers
Just got a call from my husband. The guys are at the Pisgah Inn on the top of Mount Pisgah. Of course, this is the height of leaf peeping season and the place is jam packed, but they are supposed to eat lunch there.
Hubby is not happy (putting it mildly). To him this is not back packing and roughing it when they stop at a restaurant on their second day out. On top of that, our friend who hikes all the time has a hamstring problem so it has been very slow going. He said at the rate they are going, they will be out there for two weeks. He said that after lunch, he is going to call for a come to Jesus moment. He is going to suggest they catch a ride to the Art Loeb trail and hike in from there which cut the route by about 30 miles. He did say that the other guy is a real nice guy and is a good hiker.
So now, I have to sit by the phone to see if they are going to abandon, which means I have to go pick him up or if they are going to continue on the shorter route. I always find it amazing that my husband never trains for these things but seems to do better than those who train. Stubbornness goes a long way.

I had a feeling
that you might end up having to pick up up your adventurous roughing it husband and his hiking pals. I hope they do the route that saves them 30 miles. Stopping at a restaurant on the second day out sounds quite reasonable to me. Seems to me that taking a welcome break on the second day is a good way to avoid having to abandon a hike with a punishing itinerary. Slow and easy especially with a pulled hamstring wins the race. Your husband sounds like he gets plenty of training at home with his DIY projects. I tend to be a complusive physical maniac and often take on off more then I can can handle especially in the garden which Shahryar calls Cindy's gym. I have had to come to grips that I'm no spring chicken as my acupuncturist tells me. After reading of his saga's I'm going to grid my loins and walk 5 miles today up the back route to Mt. Tabor. On the way home I'm stopping for a snack and a latte. I love reading about his adventures it's inspiring to read.
If it was up to my husband
they would have done the entire thing from porch to porch, not hitching a ride to a trailhead or stopping at a restaurant along the way. He likes to rough it. If he is going to back pack, he wants it to be really backpacking. But our friend was so slow, that my husband was ready to bail today because it was driving him crazy. He called it terminal. Next time, he should just take Roux, our male springer and hoof it solo.
When we first started dating, he took me on a three day backpacking trip. I was clueless and not a runner then. I survived, but it made me not too excited to do three days out like that. I do not like sleeping on the ground, even with a ground cover and pad and in a tent. I found out later, it was a test. I guess I passed (barely).
I am no spring chicken either and in my old age, I have become a wimp. When it was 29 degrees out this morning, I decided I would rather sit in my warm bathrobe than go for a walk and freeze my nose off. In the olden days when I ran, I never missed a run, even in the rain. Funny how soft

Works out every day and plays tennis too. He jokes that when he dies, they need to send him to the junkyard for spare parts.
They say that working in the yard is really great exercise so I bet your cardiovascular system is in tip top shape. Good for you!

Now, with your Paul Anka song, there you inspired my very own 64 million dollar questions about the ins and outs of "having my baby" Beware, I am having baby problems. Here they come.
I you live in a perfectly nice democratic socialist world, like, let's say, Germany (oh just accept it, will you? /s) , and you have a perfect health insurance system (believe me, we has that too... /s), which means every woman and every girl/teenager can get birth-control pills for free. You just go to the doctor, tell him you want it, he gets you examined and you get it. No questions asked, no problems. I told you, that's a perfect world, isn't it?
Which means with the general manly attitudes of lacking control over certain desires, the gal / women controls, if she gets pregnant or not. This is so since the mid 1960 or so (don't remember when the birth control pills were produced and sold). And in general the men folks seem to rely on the woman to take care of that part of the equation of "having his baby or not".
So, if the woman gets pregnant, the man usually can't figure out, if it was by accident or on purpose, which puts him in a slightly uncomfortable situation. He usually doesn't expect and want "you having his baby" without being asked first, if it's ok, even if he doesn't say so up-front. But boom, now he is confronted with the fact that "she is having his baby, darn and dammit".
Usually people think that an "accidental pregnancy" (forgot to take the pill or you guy hadn't a condom when you should have or something like that - I haven't that much experience in these thingies/s) is for the most part an unwanted pregnancy and you make sure the woman can get a safe abortion, if she wants to. In my perfect social democratic dream land there is no problem getting a safe abortion. Only in these ugly, cruel chaotic naked Western capitalist countries or those other ones towards the brownish and southern, like you know which ones, you can't get it that easily, not for free and not securely. (Shame, shame, shame).
But we live in our socialist dream land, where women have control over "having his baby or not having his baby". So, if you are a stern feminist, you certainly feel inclined to defend that poor woman, who had a baby unwanted, accidentally or even worse, through rape etc. All is fine, of course not the rape, sorry. But it is generally believed that the woman is in trouble for having a baby, which seemed to be that "off" to when a woman should have a baby, because you know there are not that many nice democratic socialist dream countries and in all others, the woman usually is "in trouble" and needs to be protected.
But, now in our dreamland, what do you do, if the woman just doesn't want an abortion and actually accept to "have his baby, no matter what" and declares "I raise that baby, you have no say in this, capiche?" And then comes "he" in the equation, who actually doesn't like that decision, because he didn't want a child and doesn't want to be brought into the situation to be whacked with child support and all the nice other demands babies create "by default of being cute and humans".
Has this woman enforced some child support being dumped on the man, who never intended to have a child, but falsely believed she would take care of not getting pregnant, but then realized that she happened to be a little negligent or worse got pregnant on purpose to get whatever from the father, money and some other thingies?
Sigh, problems, problems. In my dream land women are fully emancipated and have full control over their choices to have a baby or not. Do you see that as a loss of men's control over who possibly "can have his baby", because whatever he could do to prevent a pregnancy is often neglected as it is assumed that whatever she could do to avoid a pregnancy is much more effective and safer and than what he could have done ?
Well, there are funny stories I ran into. Six children, all with the same father, but with different mothers, all having felt being badly neglected by their birth father, these six children, who didn't know of each other and met and got to know about each others existence only as elderly adults, can't understand why each of the mothers actually raised them. Sure they all "love" their mothers, having seen them struggling raising the children alone, but then they sometimes "get upset" of why their darn mothers had even given birth to them. (Usually that is followed up with a smile and presented as a joke).
One very old lady (eighty years old) who had raised ten children said: You can't overlook that, in the end, no matter what, all these women wanted to have "his baby" and accepted to "raise" it, even if they lived in you socialist dream world and had full control over their decisions. So, they are alone responsible for all the consequences their children run into without having a father, who probably didn't want any of the kids.
So, are these mothers nuts? Is the father a bastard? Who is more irresponsible? Mother, Father, both for having relied on the other to "understand" that "he" might not have wanted "to have her to have his baby", but she was just "too nice" to get it anyway? Babies are cute, you know. And darn it the cost money too.
Never doubt that the truth is always better than fiction...

In Canada, the father doesn't get away
with supporting the child, whether the couple is married, common-law (it's the same as married after one year), or the child is the result of a one-night-stand.
The government can seize the father's salary or assets. If he declares bankruptcy, they will still get whatever he has left. Paying support does not guarantee that the father has the right to be involved in the child's life. Custody is another matter. This applies even if the mother is working.

What if the dead set gets alive again. Un-snipping is an option? Just asking, if I were a guy I would refuse to snip myself, because one day you might regret it. Now I need a real good poll to find out how many dead set guys are there in the world. I mean 'in the whole wide world, ok?'.
I've known guys who got snipped. There is
allegedly a reverseable snip on the market today, but those guys were old school. Another option was to drop some for insurance at a sperm bank and then get snipped - I knew a guy who did that too.
