Weekly Watch
This is a new project and I would appreciate your thoughts about making the Weekly Watch more useful and pertinent. I hope you all can find something of interest below. Thanks to many of you for the links you contributed. Thanks to JcT for a home, and to Joe for his help and advice. Any great stories that didn't make it? Please add them in the comments below. This is an open thread which means you should chime in with any comment you wish to make.
There is a bias to the news no matter who puts it together. What were the big stories last week? From my view it started with the wikileak release confirming the rigged nomination on the eve of the democratic convention. Then there was the convention and the protests. Overseas Turkey begins to grab power after the coup and build alliances with Russia. Meanwhile there is this constant march of the oligarchs in South America and around the rest of the world. So here's this weeks collection:
In the USA

Your Dallas News tough read goes to TOC, check link
Here is a local addition to energy news. I find it puzzling but somewhere I smell a scam. http://www.ithacajournal.com/story/news/local/2016/07/29/new-cayuga-plan...
A bit of backstory. The on-Cayuga-Lake-coalburning plant, operated for years by New York State Electric and Gas was sold as (i think) part of de-regulation of energy in NY. Sold to a Spanish energy/holding company. The plant became too costly, switch-off coal to gas was proposed and NY refused. The plant was sitting idle, not yet mothballed. Now it has been picked up by a ?local-ish? holding company to save the 70+ jobs and a major tax base. Coal is being delivered 1X/week (a mile-long train) for short burns at peak power times. The train will run there in perpetuity, a salt mine sits adjacent that supplies road salt to points South.
This can act as Sunday Morning, c99-style!

I like the "shotgun" approach
you have taken, Lookout. And, no, not too many links. The way you have presented things, people can pick and choose what they want to explore as their interests dictate.
I particularly like that you have separated news items / opinion pieces by topic. Such curation can be difficult as many items cover more than one topic. I think you've done an admirable job of sorting this week's collection.

Edited to add link to a mainstream media report, of which the Zero Hedge item appears to be a repost. Seems to be one of those stories that, when you try to trace it down, ends up leading you to a handful of tweets:

Due to an extended loss of commercial power to the base, supplies, including food, water and fuel were delivered to sustain missions here at Incirlik. (from last week).

It is a lot
I tried to group similar stories, but maybe it needs to be a highlights of the news instead of a fire hose of information. I would appreciate your advice on how to make it usable.
Or maybe a grouping of the best stories?
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
it's already great to have them at all, no matter how
they are presented or ordered. I like it a lot to have the video links, As to how to make it a searchable archive, I need to learn about it. And it's a lot of work to do it, not a one-man at the side volunteer labor of love on the long run.
My experience of people trying to find something in online archives, is that they get frustrated. A search page as you have it at TOP or here is even not enough for their own stories. Try to find a comment that you have made six years ago. It's a nightmare. And nobody sane would waste the time and nerves to do it. That's why I am curious to learn how others order their links.
Make up categories under which to sort articles and videos and usually you end up with five people suggesting five different categories for the same stories. Same is true for key words. People forget how many stories would have to ordered under more than one category. The work balloons quickly. The Library of Congress has over 350 000 subject categories. Add confusions over different spelling in different languages of names.
Then think about all the people who search for something, but they don't know exactly anymore when it was, where it was, on which occasion or what the exact name of a person was etc. I wished I had a good answer. I am searching for solutions myself.
It's something I like to do in the future, but I like to learn how it's professionally done.

Thank you, Lookout, for this excellent and comprehensive
first edition of Weekly Watch--you outdid yourself!
There's no such thing as 'too much news,' IMO--so, it depends on how much work it is on you, as to whether or not you should cut back on the volume of articles/videos. (And, from the looks of it, you probably spent quite a chunk of your time, turning this essay/newsletter out.)
I like the format--a lot. If the purpose is to share 'news' stories that folks may have missed, or that are truly newsworthy--you've definitely achieved that. Of course, there's no reason that you can't experiment with the formatting, if you have the time, and the inclination. I'm certainly always willing to put in my 2 Cents, if asked.
Again, 'thank you.'

Another suggestion, or two
I don't know where the banners for the morning Open Threads, The Evening Blues, and The Evening Greens came from, but I think this Weekly Watch is deserving of its own distinctive banner.
Also, since there is *so* much material provided (a good thing!), might it be possible to keep it up inthe upper right corner for longer than the customary 16-18 hours. I don't know whether this is a good suggestion or not. Consider it something to . . . consider.
Finally, mimi's comments about the "search-ability" of things reminded me of something that has frustrated me for quite some time about c99p OTs, EBs, etc. - everyone seems to be using their own preferred date format, e.g., 6-30-16, 07/31/2016, etc.
Don't care to be a hobgoblin of consistency asking everyone to use the same date format (although . . .), but I do think you, Lookout, might give some thought to what format might be best. I discovered back in the dark ages of desktop PCs that the best way to organize my files by date was using the format 2016.07.31. It's unconventional formatting for Americans, but it does properly organize files in chronological order by year, month, and day.
Just some ideas. Again, good job, Lookout, very good job indeed!

Excellent in all respects and thanks
I prefer straight simple chronological order, earliest at the top, and lots of links and stories. That way tells a story of the week (and more as time goes on) and brings up possible temporal connections. Some sites don't have time stamps, but most do.
I agree it should be pinned and a new essay created each week. And we should be posting stories.
I follow a lot of news on many more "obscure" sites... I generally post them on my FB timeline...
Thanks for the follow-up on Abbey Martin... and the economic news from Bolivia.

Facebook, Twitter, Google and Online Censorship
So Facebook was
censoring"accidentally deleting" links to Wikileaks in the hours after the story first broke and users were posting what they were finding in Zuckerberg's Garden. Hmm.At about the same time, #DNCLeaks was trending on Twitter at #3, although I saw tweets exulting that it had it #1 right before . . . it was no longer trending at all. In fact, that hashtag no longer brought up any new tweets, just as if no one was using it anymore. Eventually, Wikileaks got a new hashtag #DNCLeak going, but that hashtag never trended at all. Huh.
Now, I've run across a story about who really won the DNC (hint: it wasn't Clinton), which is interesting enough in itself, but what I found really interesting was the Editor's note at the end of the article.
Go ahead, read, or scan, the article, but do check out the Editor's note, follow the instructions and see what results you get.
