My plan is to remain in Dem party if Bernie is nominee (I still have hope!). But if he isn't this lifetime Democrat will leave the party.
I've been waiting for the convention to see what happens but tonight after this bullshit fake coronation from the MSM it's all I can do to keep from changing my party id online right this minute.
Okay, I've calmed down a bit (Thanks for listening to this rant!)
I will wait for convention. I think a mass deregistration from the Dem party would be more effective on day after convention, if it comes to that.

Geebus, FF, I haven't made any statement at all as to what should be done as far as progressives, the 99%, are concerned.
I'm speaking to what has been tried and failed, over and over again. We could elect 100 Progressives and it wouldn't do any good in the Dem Party if they are dependent upon the 1% donor money. Aside from Bernie - and now some of the candidates he is promoting - no one is weaning themselves away from that money, and the Dem Party itself holds the purse strings as well.
I don't know what's going to happen - you speak of Bernie in the past tense as though you can already characterize his campaign, what it signifies, and what will become of it. I disagree with your conclusions. I don't think it's over yet by a long shot.
I'm 61 years old and have been a registered democrat since I was in my 20's. It isn't a light decision I am making to leave the party, but I also feel very confident it's the right choice for me. I'm fine with everyone else making their own choices, from voting for Hillary to going Green to not voting at all. We all have that right and I don't believe anyone has the magic answer as to how to end this oligarchy. Just electing Dems with money in politics the way it is isn't going to change a thing, regardless of how Progressive those Dems are.
At least that's what I THINK! Hee.

They can declare anything they want. Nothing will convince me to vote for president in the GE. So, I hope they're having a good time, because I heard today that I'm not alone in rejecting Hillary. Maybe this will be the last year we have to listen to anything from or about those two.

Well, I never joined
either party. I looked into them both very closely when I was young and just couldn't do it. So, have always been an Independent who votes Democrat because who could vote for a Republican? I had said some months ago that if Bernie joined the Democratic Party and became the nominee I would give serious consideration to joining at last. Guess I don't have to think it about anymore, ever, now. Perhaps this could be the long awaited impetus for a totally new party that could sweep up all of us who have felt left out, left behind, ignored, disdained, and ill served by both parties. At least I can see that we would all pretty much be on the same page as to where that party should stand. Might be easier to have lasting impact and not take any longer, if as long, than trying to wrest the Democratic Party away from the Blue Oligarchs. Hell, even sounds like a lot of Fun!

When I voted for HRC in my state (TX) primary back in 2007, I was confident that she could undo 8 years of GWB. But now her corporate-friendly centrist views leaves me feeling completely uninspired.
Considering that she has contradicted herself on several issues and continues to do so without suffering any real setbacks is depressing. As long as MSM and the online community never criticizes/analyzes her platform, all is well.
It's almost as if Trump is running the absolute worst GOP campaign possible just to highlight HRC'S favorables. But for voters like me, even that isn't enough. Like it was all planned in advance. Sorry - I'm venturing unto CT land.

I was an independent
for many years, due to people like the Clintons being in office. In Texas I had to declare myself a democrat in order to vote for Bernie in the primary, despite the fact that I knew he had little to no chance of winning here. First presidential primary I've ever voted in. But just due to the treatment of progressives I'm torn about whether to sit out the election or not. I'm tired after all these years of the "our candidate is not as bad as theirs / maybe we'll accommodate you next time" bullshit. I'm not happy with Obama in a lot of cases, TPP being a main one and his not having a spine a lot of the time, and already know from experience that Clinton will be far worse. You want my vote? Give me a damn good reason for doing so.
Why do people pick a party in the first place?
I can see how the team-rival model works at the local level — for "little league" candidates just starting out. It's a funding source and networking opportunity.
I was wondering why voters also pick a Team when they register to vote. What do they get out of it?

For me, there is an abyss between local politics and Federal so-called "elections."
When Parties close primaries, it is a subversion of democracy. A wide swathe of people suffer taxation without representation at both the state and federal levels, as a result. It also forces political cohesion on citizens. These are violations of the US Constitution. (One of the few rare sections that are not totally obsolete.) If a lawsuit was filed, the Supreme Court could hold a seance and channel the Forefathers about it. Psrties have absolutely no standing in the US Constitution. They especially do not have the right to suppress the votes of American citizens. (Only the States are allowed to do that. Thanks, Forefathers.)

I am trying to decide what to do when. As a life long Democrat (and we are talking 54 years of voting ever since I was of an age) and 10 of being an active party member at the local level it will be difficult...but I now know that honesty intelligence and compassion can exist in the political realm and I just can't support anything less... anymore. I used to think that the lesser of evils was our only choice. no more.

They were all the crazies and it was going to be fun watching them implode and how much more civilized the Democratic debates were. It's all such a sham.

That famous quote from Audre Lorde is really what I wrestle with when it comes to the question of leaving the party or not. Realistically, can the institution be reformed? Or has it been so entirely corrupted at every level that it simply needs to be torn down? If you think that the Democratic Party can be saved, of course you should stay. However, if you can see the unmitigated corruption and corporate influence at every level (among many other things), it makes sense to leave. Nothing other than a wholesale changing of the guard will fix the inherent problems of the institution, and the Democratic Party itself will always resist attempts to change it from within.
At this point, I'm fully content with becoming an independent again. In fact, I generally want the Democrats to lose elections until they get the message. They need us. Sure, I'll back individual candidates I support, but I will not remain as part of the corrupt institution, as party membership gives them leverage over me and the ability to blackmail me into supporting candidates that have not earned my vote. Right now, the left is completely taken for granted by the Democratic Party, and after this primary, you can bet your ass that the establishment is going to erect additional barriers to make it even more difficult for insurgent candidates to unseat incumbents.
If you really want to take over the party, you need to mobilize candidates on the state and local levels to primary every single neoliberal Democrat that deviates from liberal positions. That's what conservatives did in the 1970s. They started from the ground up and they weren't afraid to lose. Sometimes, they purposely destroyed Republican candidates just to send the establishment a message: that they needed to be feared because they were willing to cut off their noses to spite their faces. It took them roughly 15 years to achieve that takeover in a party that wasn't fighting against them at every turn. They were unified, disciplined, and regularly showed up for election after election. Given what's happened in this primary, I'm not certain it can be done, and even if it could be, it will take much longer than it took conservatives to stage their coup of the Republican Party. They had money, resources, and power on their side. We have the people, but at this point, I'm not certain how much that can affect real change in our post-Citizens United political system.

Not sure how bad the effects are going to be--the perps are well-insulated.
But this was an unnecessary step even if you are rigging the election. Clumsy, ham-handed. Shows a bit of desperation, oddly.

There's one problem with the GBCW idea there
By declaring you're leaving the party, that also means you won't be eligible to vote in other primary races. Yes, the presidential primary has been horrible, but if there's a down tickets race where being a member could make a difference, I'd want to have that in my pocket. I sure doesn't mean you need to support the presidential candidate in any way, but I'd like to have one extra chip in my pocket to use.

Some states require party membership to vote in primaries - and some states don't.
Personally I think ALL states should do it the way Virginia does (and not just because I live there): anyone can vote in a primary, registered or not - but they have to specify which primary and can only choose one.

I have weighed the pros and cons and the only benefit I see to remaining a democrat is to vote In Primaries BUT this primary has shown Me that, in MY restate (NY) it doesn't matter who I vote for in The primaries... The NY machine pick ALWAYS wins.

I'm not sure much will matter after this election. Climate Change is advancing, and from what I'm seeing, there is much astroturfing as our nation's assets are being siphoned off into a few hands. The Clintons clearly knew about Climate Change decades ago, if Exxon Mobile did: certainly through their long years: and they are the architects of both media silence and massive wealth extraction.
With Trump spewing Nazi hate and Clinton's tender relationship with Henry "genocide is necessary" Kissinger, as well as the abject derision of the Clintons toward voters: not even worried about obeying laws; big or small; and dismissing whole swaths of the population, it certainly seems like something MUCH more sinister is afoot.

I am concerned, if enough people deregister before the convention, they will somehow use that to delegitimize Bern's votes even more, maybe even somehow take away his pledged delegates. I share your frustrations, but let it ride another month.
Meanwhile I had a couple Dem party surveys in the mail and I answered them with "I will only volunteer, donate, etc., if Bernie is the nominee!" and "I will not send you any more money ever again until you stop being Republican Lite because it will just go to waste. Repub Lite is a losing strategy". I then put those in their postage-paid envelopes and sent them back. Felt good! Cost them postage at least!

I live in a state so red the sky is purple, so I can dump my Dem. registration the day after the convention as needed and sign back up if I absolutely need to if there is ever a primary I need to be a Dem. to vote in because there's a genuwine Progressive candidate running.
In the meantime, I was looking for a random target, so I read today's Matthew Yglesias spew on VOX and sent them this nice response:
Oh, so you really, in your high-and-mighty expert opinion, believe that once the corruption succeeds and the Dims hand Clinton her fraudulent "victory", then people will decide either to hold their nose and their stomach and their bowels and vote for her, or they'll vote for somebody else?
