2016 Desert Trip Report

"Desert Trip Report" is something of a misnomer, but not entirely. Most years we go to the desert and most such trips include some of the same locales and general activities. For many years now, our return has been largely via the coast. We had some hopes for a better than usual bloom this year, even though we were late related to the celebrated Death Valley Super-Bloom, but, frankly, we've seen better, more than once.

Look past pink and blue

photo bathroomAlisha_zps36bzzbbh.jpgThe title of this diary is also the title of a new campaign in New York City informing NYC's residents and visitors that they may use the restroom consistent with their identity.

With people comparing us to dogs, and saying we need to use whatever bushes and trees we can find for privacy, the campaign is very welcome.

The new campaign, which officials debuted Monday, includes real life transgender New Yorkers and tells people to "look past pink and blue" and to "use the restroom consistent with who you are."

The Birth of a Movement, the End of Democracy

Part I: Boy, I Hope This Doesn't Suck

I made a comment last weekend that Joe, gulfgal, and JtC asked me to turn into an essay. The gist of the comment is that arguing about whether we should be focused on electoral politics or not misses the point of where we are, politically, right now. It's been a hell of a slog trying to make it into an essay, because I'm trying to sum up where I think we are politically without writing a 6-book series and boring you all to tears! So, I hope this doesn't suck--and I beg your indulgence.

Mother Jones Tours Illinois for Socialist Party of America

Mother Jones by Bertha Howell (Mrs Mailly), ab 1902.png

Today Hellraisers pauses to catch up with Mother Jones and to document her whereabouts and doings for the month of May 1906. We find Mother, at the end of May, on tour as a National Organizer for the Socialist Party of America. The photograph at right was taken by Bertha Howell, who is now married to William Mailly, former National Secretary of Socialist Party.

Our Democracy Spring Is Far From Over, It's Just Getting Started

Stepping outside my door today, I stopped, struck by the beauty of the blossoms on one the bush that lines our walkway. I don't even know its name, or the name of its blossoms. Most of the year it never blooms, standing there with its stiff, lanceolate shaped leaves hanging down, often curled in around the edges, looking a bit sad and forlorn. But when it does bloom, it's magnificent. So I took this photograph with my phone:

A C99% Bernie News Roundup

Hello friends! I am so glad to see you are back up and running! I woke up extra early this morning to try and make a crosspostable BNR to share with you all who (rightfully) do not go over yonder! I truly am sorry I could not do more sooner, (dk5 is a big kospiracy..... middle of primaries 'upgrade' that makes things worse?). I certainly plan on posting original content here at c99% in the future, as well as doing some crossposting Anyways... lets hope this works... and if it does not..
