Once upon a time

There was once a fun little blog with free range thinking, flinging opinions every which way. One day this big, bad shadow hovered over the commenters and essayists. Thunderous words, judgements and almost hateful replies have occasionally erupted against nonconformist opinions. Those singular minds who shared the joys and fears of their times became worried. It became unreasonable to go against the current flow of ideas, at the risk of shame and humiliation.

Okay. What happens to the news-sated political junkies on Friday when the typical hide-it-in-plain- sight news dump occurs? It stays buried. Unless some intrepid soul digs deep into the slime, er news to find juicy morsels. I prefer my morsels closer to the surface but, hey, you get it where you find it.

The Other Historical Event We Should Celebrate in July

John Adams must have shaken his head as he watched delegates to the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention filing into the West Room of the Statehouse on July 15, 1776. Across the hall in the East Room, Adams and his colleagues in the Continental Congress had recently voted to declare the thirteen colonies independence from Great Britain. Now the newly independent states would each have to create new "republican" constitutions. A month before, Adams had worried that the new constitutions would be influenced by a "spirit of leveling, as well as that of innovation." In the Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776, perhaps the most radically democratic in the world at the time, Adams worst fears would be realized.
