A Nation of Men and Women, not Laws

As a longtime leftie, I despair of the deliberately self-defeating tactics the so-called opposition is using to get rid of Trump: "blame Russia" and "Me Too". To pick these two tactics when there are so many other avenues for actually impeaching the man (before he sells what is left of America to the billionaire class, and then blows us all to kingdom come) shows what a phony, Kabuki theater our duopolistic political system has become.

What is a republic?

At some point in 2009 or 2010, as I watched the political and economic catastrophes of Barack Obama interposing himself between the banksters and "the pitchforks" unfold, I was reading a book on the history of American industrial technology. The Introduction included a discussion of the republican political thought of the Founders. Those two or three paragraphs launched me into researching American history, to answer two questions:

Here's what c99 means to me & why I want it to continue

I thought long and hard about this site after JtC's essay yesterday. It was sad to hear that people have left the site and some have withdrawn donations. What is there for me to say? Well, a lot really.

Given Uber, this is no surprise. But the implications of what passes for "accepted business practices" on the Internet should terrify everyone.

"Steal the issues from populists."

I don't watch much MSNBC or CNN anymore but I usually have a TV droning in the background, especially in the morning. I usually go with CSPAN but today I landed on CNN.

My ears perked up when I heard someone say "Neoliberal has been a bad term for a long time."

Turned out to be David Frum responding to a question from Fareed Zakaria about what the American centrist establishment might learn from Macron.

The Weekly Watch

Alabama, Cults, and Circles

Well finally some good news from an Alabama election....not all is bad in this state with such a bad reputation. There's good and bad everywhere I guess. Alabama does have cults. Have you read Salvation on Sand Mountain? I taught many children from the Holiness Church discussed in the book, but that's not the kind of cult I have in mind. It is the cult of media that Max Blumenthal talks about that we'll discuss in today's column. Then finally we'll go round and round the news cycle and end up celebrating the longest night of the year.
