OT WE 29 JUL 26 ~ National Lipstick Day

.

~
Lapiz_labial.jpg

In the 19th century, lipstick was colored with carmine dye. Carmine dye was extracted from cochineal, scale insects native to Mexico and Central America which live on cactus plants. Yum? Done for beauty I suppose.

~

Now that is behind me. Could say something about lipstick on a pig but didn't care much for the author.
(Obomber). Moving on to weirder topics, found this Japanese forestry technique originating in the 14th
century called daisugi meaning platform cedar. The idea is to prune branches above a platform
of branches to allow a straight, knot-free trunk to grow which is then harvested. Saves growth time.

daisugi-1.jpg

"The technique was developed in Kyoto as a means of solving a seedling shortage and was used to create a sustainable harvest of timber from a single tree. Done right, the technique can prevent deforestation and result
in perfectly round and straight timber known as taruki, which are used in the roofs of Japanese teahouses." or Chashitsu (茶室).

Found this organization today which seems good.
Called DeFlock, they track Flock cameras across the US.
Named ALRP's (automated license plate readers), the
nefarious angle is what is done with the data once collected.
Shared with 1000's of agencies outside of local jurisdiction,
all warrantless. "Solving crime before it happens" is their motto.

A handy interactive map is here: https://deflock.org
And a funny article of some guy pushing back:
https://www.404media.co/casa-grande-arizona-flock-city-council/

Is there a camera down that rabbit hole?

I thought this man fighting back on the Flocking of his hometown was a great idea.
Check out the 45 second video, for sure!

Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out the best way to sell off my office furniture. I have been seeing news about how Facebook Marketplace is not a safe way to meet strangers and expect a sale to be done. It can easily lead to theft. Maybe a yard sale?
Thanks for the OT, friend!

Hi Q!

Rescuers search for survivors after a 7.1 quake kills 18 in southwestern Japan

KUMAMOTO, Japan (AP) — Soldiers and emergency workers combed through a badly damaged shopping mall and collapsed houses looking for trapped survivors Wednesday after a powerful earthquake that killed at least 18 people, including a foreigner, in southwestern Japan.

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake that hit a day earlier in the Kumamoto area on the southern main island of Kyushu also left at least 62 people injured, six of them seriously, the prefectural government said. The tally has been steadily growing, fanning fears it may continue to rise.

Some of the most serious damage was at the Aeon Mall shopping center in the town of Kashima, which was bustling with thousands of people when the quake happened. The company said some 3,000 customers were evacuated to a parking lot before a gas explosion happened in another part of the mall, where some people were still working.

Nearly 34,900 homes were still without electricity and some 15,000 homes without running water, Kumamoto officials said. More than 8,800 people left their homes to stay in over 400 shelters, where power sources were being added to provide air conditioning.

More at the link above.

Watched a South Korean MBC report on this, which said there was a similar earthquake in the same area ten years ago. There is a difference of opinion on this one, whether this one is 7.1 or 6.8. The higher reading which may be wrong is due to the relative shallow depth of epicenter estimated at 10 km. The concern is that public may downplay the potential of "after shocks" as they did 10 years ago, when the after shock was stronger than the initial quake. Rescue operations are still ongoing.

would appear to have been nearly as catastrophic as the earthquake itself, with the added issue of the first responders who were working the scene, since the explosion was on the order of an hour after the initial quake.

There had to be injuries in the semi-stopped traffic on that adjacent highway, as well- the shrapnel from that explosion is nontrivial. This entire incident is really unfortunate, and I hope that help can make it to the survivors in time- and that the responders can be safe in the process. A bad day all around.

First rule of earthquake survival which used to be actively taught in California primary schools: Find the gas main and turn it off. Prepatory instructos, find the gas main and learn how to turn it off, if it requires a special tool, get one and keep it handy, near the valve if possible.

This is obviously not straightforeward at a big commercial center like a mall, but persons should be delegated for that, as well as emergency crews and the gas provider. This is all soon forgotten after any quake and is ignored after about 5 to 10 years.

building codes have specified automatic seismic shutoffs for the gas service lines to publicly-accessible buildings, based upon experience painfully gained from earlier major earthquakes. On edit: that was enacted with the major change to the building codes in 1981, following the 1978 Miyagi Prefecture earthquake (https://diytosan.com/building-age-earthquake-standards-1981-law-change-j...). However, it doesn't help to have a shutoff on the service drop if the gas main itself is damaged before the isolator, and leaks into the rubble. But even if there are isolators on the mains themselves, there would still be a large volume of high pressure gas already present in the segment of the large-diameter main back to the previous isolator, as well. That may be what happened here.

Living in this crummy little apartment is the first time since living in CA that I don't have a correctly-sized wrench chained to the shutoff for our drop. However, all the gas meters for everyone in my building are mounted to the wall directly outside our garage. So when the Little Big One hits the Denver area, I'll be ready to grab my crescent wrench, crawl out from under the rubble of the garage door, and go shut it down for everyone: we all share the same roof and walls...

We still have our CA earthquake kit: a bottle of wine, a corkscrew, and a bag of chips. (;-)

Hey, UFS!

I heard this report below say there were 2700 people in that mall at the time of the quake, so almost all of them got out. The explosion was one hour later according to another report I heard, while rescue teams were searching for and extracting missing or trapped people.

This is best update I've heard so far, the computer translated English audio is good quality.

Edit Okay, one has to go to watch on youtube to get the English audio.

tip and beautiful picture. Thanks too for the OT.

Hey Everybody, we made it to Wednesday, which is a good thing but

TIME IS RUNNING OUT! - There are only 97 days until the mid-term elections. We all need to immediately rush all the money we can to the uniparty faction and/or Candidate(s) of our choice so that they can change things for the better. This is the year when things will finally start changing for the better instead of for the worse, Richt? But only if we cough up enough cowrie. If we all do our bit, John Mayer will finally be able to stop waiting, so hop to it.

Lookout's picture

Been out grading the last stretch of road that I hadn't done. Had to do hand work to clear the weeps. So, I got out early before the worst of the heat. Then ran a few errands in town.

Interesting tree production technique.
I've just started singing this one.

CROOKED TREE

Two trees in the forest
One was crooked, one was straight
Crimson bark and emerald needles
Growing day by day
And though they looked so different
They enjoyed the rain the same
Side by side

A chickadee had told them
Of a darkness on the land
The spinning blades that came to visit
Carried by a man
And every other tree would see them
Cut down where they stand
By and by

Oh can’t you see
A crooked tree won’t fit into the mill machine
They’re left to grow wild and free
Oh I’d rather be a crooked tree

The perfect trees were driven
Down the mountain to the mill
They turned them into toothpicks
And twenty dollar bills
It seemed the more the people took
The more they needed still
In the end…

The crooked trees were left there
after all the work was done
Now they go for weeks
And never witness anyone
No one left to tell them if they’re
growing right or wrong
but the whispering wind...

Oh can’t you see
A crooked tree won’t fit into the mill machine
They’re left to grow wild and free
I’d rather be a crooked tree

People say I’m different
And my way of life seems strange
I took the road less traveled
Twists and turns along the way
But like the crooked tree
I’m growin stronger day by day
As the clouds roll by…

A river never wonders
Why it flows around the bend
A mountain doesn’t question
How it rose up from the land
So who am I to wish
I wasn’t just the way I am
Who am I…

Oh can’t you see
A crooked tree won’t fit into the mill machine
They’re left to grow wild and free
Oh I’d rather be a crooked tree

A crooked tree won’t fit into the mill machine
They’re left to grow wild and free
I’d rather be a crooked tree
Oh I’d rather be a crooked tree

We could reduce the need for trees with bamboo and rattan as paper sources. There was an Alabama agronomist in the 30's who had proven the efficiency of bamboo for paper production. Bamboo could be chipped, and would regrow from the stubble to harvest size in just a few years. The timber industry made sure the idea didn't catch on.

Sorry to hear about the earthquake and fire in Japan. Wishing the deflockers well.

Hope everyone is doing well. Thanks for the OT!

They sell flooring made of the stuff. It is fast growing.
Have a patch in the back which crept under the fence
which we harvest almost yearly. Makes great plant stakes.
These grow to about 12' high. The refrain of your song is great.

Stay cool. Rainy here today.

Zionism is a social disease

how many followers he has but I think that this is worth posting.

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5996424-alex-jones-trump-imp...

Alex Jones, the former owner of InfoWars, on Tuesday said President Trump must be impeached over the Iran conflict, describing the situation as “absolutely out of control” and warning that the administration is preparing for a national draft.

“The big issue is how to stop Trump. And we have to have Congress go for the war powers. They’ve tried three times to vote on war powers — they’re supposed to authorize a war. This is a war; they’re getting the draft ready. If this isn’t a war, nothing’s a war. I mean, this is absolutely out of control,” Jones said during a live segment broadcast on the social platform X.

In March, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president had not ruled out the possibility of a draft for the Iran conflict.

“And so I’m calling for it right now: 25th Amendment, impeachment, whatever needs to happen to get this front and center, to get control of our country,” he added.

Jones, a well-known conspiracy theorist and former ally of the president, also said Trump’s support of the National Defense Authorization Act is “impeachable.”

has committed innumerable impeachable acts.
The destruction of our country would be high on the list.
Depending on which side of the spectrum he 'wakes-up'
on each day, it's either more war or negotiations. Inconsistency
is preventing people and businesses to make informed decisions.
I do not know Alex Jones either, Doesn't matter, he is barking up
the right tree.
