Waking Back Biden’s Philadelphia Speech

Appararently, if you took Biden’s Philadelphia speech seriously, and thought, perhaps, you were hearing a totalitarian doctrine scripted by his Neocon handlers and advisors, then you missed the practical joke.

If you saw Biden’s lips reading the telepromptor and it sounded like a right-wing Democratic President delivering threats to silence or criminalize dissenters and truthtellers, who object to the Presidential empowerment of neoliberal economic policies, or international war-mongering provocations against nuclear enabled superpowers — well, you missed the clever trick.

Enter desk-bound journalist, David Frum, who has jotted a few paragraphs at the Atlantic, that completely explain how Biden’s speech wasn’t what you thought it was. Biden’s speech, according to Frum, was actually an elaborate sting operation. It was designed to trap Donald Trump into an angry response — and at the same time prove to the world that he is an important member of the Republican Party!

In fact, says Frum, just 48-hours after Biden’s speech, Donald Trump took the bait! He appeared at a political rally, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and made angry, derogatory remarks about Philadelphia. This apparently proved he was involved in Republican election campaigns.

That’s a good trick, right?

Okay, maybe you have to belong to the Democratic Party to really get how funny it was.

•••

Under the byline — David Frum: The justification for Biden’s speech — the journalist explains:

Biden Laid the Trap. Trump Walked Into It.

Biden came to Philadelphia to deliver a wound to Trump’s boundless yet fragile ego. Trump obliged with a monstrously self-involved meltdown 48 hours later. And now his party has nowhere to hide. Trump has overwritten his name on every Republican line of every ballot in 2022.

The rally format allowed time for only brief remarks by the two candidates actually on the ballot, Oz and Mastriano. Its message was otherwise all Trump, Trump, Trump. A Republican vote is a Trump vote. A Republican vote is a vote to endorse lies about the 2020 presidential election.

On and on it went, in a protracted display of narcissistic injury that was exactly the behavior that Biden’s Philadelphia speech had been designed to elicit. This headline later led the local news: “Donald Trump Blasts Philadelphia, President Biden During Rally for Doug Mastriano, Dr. Oz in Wilkes-Barre.”

Yes, you read that right: Campaigning in Pennsylvania, the ex-president denounced the state’s largest city. “I think Philadelphia was a great choice to make this speech of hatred and anger. [Biden’s] speech was hatred and anger,” Trump declared last night. “Last year, the city set an all-time murder record with 560 homicides, and it’s on track to shatter that record again in 2022. Numbers that nobody’s ever seen other than in some other Democrat-run cities.”

Biden dangled the bait. Trump took it—and put his whole party on the hook with him. Republican leaders are left with little choice but to pretend to like it.

.
Not to rain on Frum's Mission Accomplished, but Trump's response seemed a bit watered-down and irrelevant to me. As for the goal of associating Trump with future Republican political campaigns, I suppose this "trap" reinforced something that is already widely known among folks with a memory. However, according to Frum, Republicans want people to forget Trump's election lies, and they have pleaded with Trump to keep a low profile and stay out of the 2022 race. Frum goes on to speculate:

Maybe the pleas were always doomed to fail. Show Trump a spotlight, and he’s going to step into it. But Republicans pinned their hopes on the chance that Trump might muster some self-discipline this one time, some regard for the interests and wishes of his [Republican] partners and allies.

.
Frum’s explanation of Biden’s trick speech, purportedly designed to goad Trump into a live 'melt-down', abruptly meanders off into the unrelated events of Mar-a-Lago and the classified documents. Unfortunately, these sorts of investigations have a way of slipping through the knots that partisan-journalists attempt to tie.

Yesterday, in an unexpected turn-of-events, the Mar-a-Lago investigation will not be a legal black box, after all. The judge in the matter plans to appoint a special master to pre-review records seized by the FBI in order to exclude 'privileged' documents, and has ordered the Justice Department to stop reviewing the records as part of its criminal investigation.

U.S. judge agrees to special master in Trump search case, delaying probe

By Sarah N. Lynch

Sept 5 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Monday agreed to appoint a special master to review records seized by the FBI during its search of former President Donald Trump's Florida estate, a move that is likely to delay the Justice Department's criminal investigation.

In her ruling, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in West Palm Beach, Florida, granted Trump's request for a special master, an independent third party who is sometimes assigned in sensitive cases to review materials that could be covered by attorney-client privilege.

Cannon said the person will be tasked with reviewing documents that are not just covered by attorney-client privilege, but any records possibly covered by executive privilege as well.

The decision to allow a special master to review documents that could be covered by executive privilege, a legal doctrine that can shield some White House records from disclosure, is uncharted legal territory.

Cannon also ordered the Justice Department to stop reviewing the records as part of its criminal investigation, a move that will likely at least temporarily hinder its ability to continue investigating.

.
Does any of this make sense to you?

What is the point of David Frum's article, in the first place? What did it accomplish?

The world has already taken note of Biden's Philadelphia speech.

Any sane person could have told them how that speech would look and sound to the disaffected majority (who hate both parties because both parties lie, cheat and steal). But apparently the Establishment is buried too deep in its own bullshit, so now they're trying to tell us the shit don't stink.

‘I Don’t Consider Any Trump Supporter to Be a Threat’

President Joe Biden tried Friday to walk back his dark political speech from the night before after receiving considerable backlash for trying to portray supporters of former President Donald Trump as radical extremists who threatened the United States.

“I don’t consider any Trump supporter to be a threat to the country,” Biden replied when asked by reporters at the White House about why he decided to say that Trump and his supporters were a threat to democracy.

vote for any Dem, or Trump if he shows up again. As far as I'm concerned Brandon gutting his own base is just fine with me. It'll be interesting to see just how nuts it gets between now and either a) the election or b) the bright white flash.

The world has truly gone completely insane. Maybe the UFOs will show up to help.

The speech was scheduled for several days, at a symbolic site of our nations development. If long laid plans had successfully developed the main core of the speech could have been foreign policy.

US and our Allies backing of Ukraine's long promised offensive successful, the nuclear plant back in Western control. Oil prices going down due to Western resolve and will go down further with a G7 price cap.

China cowed by US Navy ships continuing Freedom of Navigation, expanded arms sales to Taiwan and our impressive Artemis 1 launch to the moon.

America is Back Baby!

Only all efforts failed. There was only a demented man with a scheduled speech who could not learn a new one in time. He is not even able to walk to and from a podium without personal assistance by his caretaker wife. The only option left was to comprise a speech of phrases peppering his speeches over the decades he could deliver without stumbling. When comprised as a monologue the messages becomes to obvious to ignore. Displaying the true self of the political Party and himself. The pundits have no "happy talk" or "statesman talk" to repeat incessantly to shape the memory of the speech by the national and international audience.

So on to deflection. If we were not part of the ignorant masses we would would understand the Joke.

The world has already taken note of Biden's Philadelphia speech.

Had to read it twice. Your point about the absence of foreign policy context, which is really what the staging and theme suggested, hits home. And the fact that none of it was good news, and thus left out of the speech, was something I missed altogether.

I get the feeling that foreign policy speeches are a thing of the past. It's not a topic that is shared with the American people, except in slogans and media propaganda.

Your take on the overall setting and the staging is priceless.

Ok, if From is right, isn't he setting up DeSantis as the goper candidate? It seems that DeSantis would make an extremely strong candidate. Anybody remember how the Clinton's pushed a Trump candidacy? Seems like similar situation.

that was omitted above is that the Trump legal team went forum shopping for a favorable judge, filed their complaint in a district of that federal circuit where only one judge, Cannon, sits, and so was guaranteed success as she is of course a DJT-appointed judge. The latest ruling wasn't much of a surprise also bc of her previous statements that hinted at this outcome.

Welcome news for those who support DJT in this case, while the DOJ, having so much in the illegally-retained NatSec docs area to work with was not going to be inclined to fail to return any docs of a clearly Atty-client nature, so the ruling appears as an extraordinary deference to the well-heeled defendant, special treatment iow. The DOJ appealing might not be a smart approach given months more delay and the 11th Circuit's conservative bias and the crazy RWery of at least 5 Js on Scotus.

Just another reminder of the separate system of justice for the 1% and ex-presidents.

It was a big "PRIME TIME" speech. What is the point of "prime time" presidential addresses? To make sure almost everyone in America sees them. How so? Almost everyone in America used to be watching TV at "prime time". ABC, NBC, and CBS, plus the fourth biggie now FOX, ALL DID NOT CARRY IT LIVE. They reviewed the content and decided it was too politically volatile to air, apparently at any time. Can you imagine the incompetence of TeamBlue leadership to create a prime time address that could not be aired? Even by their own cheerleaders? These are the great minds directing the course of our nation. Homo ignoramus.

Here is a better Prime Time - R.I.P. Re

Unlike a certain Dirty Harry-counterfeit I will never forget nor forgive, this current regime has shown some amenability to flinching in the face of sufficient public backlash, THANK THOTH.

Creepy Uncle Joe crossed a line, exactly the one many people who voted for him feared from the other guy; people's memories might not be getting better, and 'Lincoln's Law' still applies, but just as long-term climatologists can make more accurate forecasts than daily meteorologists, we're finally starting to rack up enough data to sift the truth from out of the static.

Personally, I think people like Trump exactly because he is crass and in your face. It's the only finger they can give to the establishment. I do feel like we are approaching a boiling point. This speech did not go unnoticed. We shall see.....

@Crazytimes Like I said before, the only real difference between him and the others (and the reason they hate him despite his being on their side) is that he talks the walk, and shows them what they really are.

For the disenfranchised and totally beyond hope, that must be downright refreshing.
It feels like they've sentenced us to premature hospice-care as is, so can't they at least turn on the AC and a clown show?

Pluto rightly takes him apart whilst those on Orange State venerated him. I almost fell out of my chair the first time I saw his work being promoted there. But he’s just one of the many villains from the Bush era who has been rehabilitated. Rick Wilson is another one who became gawd like over there because of what he said about Trump. But even Bush himself became acceptable once he said something bad about Trump.
