Powerful Beyond Measure

In order to stay sane, sometimes it is better to look at the trajectory we've been on from a purely anthropological point of view; as a witness of history and human behavior.

Not that I expect everybody to agree with my understanding of the situation, but, starting from an honest-to-goodness desire to make sense of what I've been observing for a few decades now, here's what I see: Modern-day would-be tyrants found a way to shield themselves from the public by hiding behind the corporate veil. They then proceeded to use their wealth and influence to systematically take over the levers of power, including government institutions, the media, and, more recently, cultural and higher education institutions (i.e., museums, an increasing number of non-profits, academia).

This process has been taking place in a very systematic and relentless manner for about 40-plus years now (the August 23, 1971 publication of the Powell Memo having been a seminal moment).

Once the corporate cartels consolidated their dominance, influence and power over the political system, they proceeded to push for legislation specifically designed to install a plutocratic oligarchy. The regulatory infrastructure (that protected citizens against fraud, corruption, monopolies, and cartels) was dismantled step by step, via legislation supported by both corporatist "mainstream" political parties. Labor unions were undermined and rendered ineffective, resulting in a precipitous fall in union membership. The Chicago school of Economics' Neoliberal philosophy (financialization of the productive sector; undermining, defunding and privatization of the public sector; privatization of profit, socialization of losses) came to dominate our entire socioeconomic system.

As this process went on, the nascent oligarchy started to put in place the legal, social, and technological infrastructure to help bring about the next step: corporate state fascism. This process accelerated after 9/11.

Legislation that chipped away at our constitutional and civil rights was systematically implemented at the national and state levels. Habeas corpus was repealed (for all "real" intents and purposes); the government claimed the right to engage in extra-judicial assassinations of American citizens. The right to privacy and protections against unreasonable searches went out the window, as a corporatist and government alliance put into place the most sophisticated surveillance police state the world has ever known.

All this being in place, the oligarchy is now moving the system of government towards the next step: purposely exploiting cultural, ethnic, and religious differences within the citizenry in order to turn people against each other in the truest sense of the word. These forces/entities within our "Deep State" have been doing these sorts of thing for many decades in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and other regions in the world. Now they are turning these tactics inward, here in the "homeland."

And so, anticipating every step of the way, ALEC, the NRA, and other corporatist entities and their lackeys in government moved to pass cookie-cutter states' legislation to arm the right wing; they pushed for open-carry, concealedl-carry, stand-your-ground, and similar policies that would eventually be used to turn a segment of the population highly influenced by xenophobia, nativism, racism, religious fundamentalism, embrace of authoritarianism, into what will essentially be recognized as a first line of defense (or informal shock fascist troops) against the rest of the population, against racial and ethnic minorities, against the LGBTQ community, against social justice activists and intellectuals.

And here we are today, Sunday, March 20th, 2016 (Happy Spring Equinox BTW)!

Like clockwork (the "Deep State" has been operating by the fascist playbook anyways), a fascist strongman emerges to dominate the vast majority of corporate media coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign, having benefited by an estimated $2 billion in free media coverage.

I'm not going to get too deep into the topic of propaganda (saving it for another occasion), but suffice it to say the relentless media coverage (both positive and negative) of the fascist running for president has a net positive effect when it comes to the likelihood of him becoming president.

But, in reality, to the oligarchs, to the "Deep State," it doesn't really matter whether they can push an outright fascist into the Oval Office, or one with a softer approach like HRC, as long as it is either one of them.

The reason for that is because we've already been living in a de facto corporatist fascist state; one that arose in the aftermath of 9/11 and has been entrenching itself ever since.

Of course, there are many people who have been warning us about this situation we find ourselves in for many years now. People like Chris Hedges, Sheldon Wolin (Inverted Totalitarianism), Henry Giroux, and many others, have been both narrating each step of the way and accurately predicting the obvious outcome(s).

But, because of the incredibly effective propaganda emanating from the corporate media 24/7, their voices have been muted (when it comes to their ability to reach a large-enough segment of the population). However, and again, looking at it from an anthropological point of view, it seems to me that a larger segment of the population is finally coming to grips with the reality of the true nature of the system: malevolent, oppressive, corrupt, and exploitative. Yes, unfortunately conditions had to get THIS bad for people to start paying attention; but, as they say, it's better later than never when it comes to something this important.

What do we do now? It should be obvious by now that we have a very serious problem on our hands, starting with the fact (if you accept it as such) that we are living in a de facto surveillance police state oligarchy. It should also be obvious that the solution to this problem will not be found (only) within the political system, since ALL major and relevant political/governmental institutions have been captured, or highly compromised.

The way I see it, we need to do two things: Yes, stay engaged in the political system (not giving one inch), but also look into the concept of participatory democracy, bypassing compromised institutions and forming parallel social structures. We need to deliberately engage in actions with the express purpose of defunding and disempowering the corporate state (boycotts, shifting spending away from corporate chains towards locally owned businesses, etc.). We need to do everything we can to avoid exposing ourselves to corporate media propaganda, which I consider to be the number one (and most effective) way the ruling elite has of controlling the population.

But, most importantly, we need to find each other, connect with each other, act in unison, face to face as much as possible, hearing each other's voices in the real world.

I'm not sure if what I'm about to describe could be seen from an anthropological or anecdotal lens, but, at least for me, my experience has been that by actively seeking the truth about the true nature of the system and connecting with others who feel the same, I've come to understand that the narrow framework of possibilities this brutal (Neoliberal) system pushes 24/7, described by some as "there is no alternative" (to Neoliberalism) or TINA, is based on the oligarch's fear that we could one day awake and realize how truly powerful we are. That, once one frees one's mind from the shackles of corporate state propaganda, the human spirit, our ability to feel, to dream, to hope, to act together, is seen as boundless.

Imagine what would happen once people come to this realization! We would have discovered exactly how .01 percent of the population has been able to utterly control the other 99 percent. The implication of this happening must be truly frightening... to the brutal, corrupt, and exploitative oligarchy.

Nice to see so many e-pals here. I lurked for years at the other place but dropped a bajillion comments this election cycle, inspired by Bernie Sanders' truth telling (also: he and and Jane are big huggers). Probably helped to have been a constituent for a decade. But look at the millions of people who get it, get him and what he's saying, and haven't had the good fortune to have lived in Vermont. Smile

I have silly little dreams of a Sanders voters get-together somewhere with great music (from OPOL and others) a la Woodstock, a hopeful, joyous gathering of open hearts and open minds, without the mud but with the spirit of joy and camaraderie.

Good to see you here. Let's go deep.
While I agree with what you're saying, how to organize such things is the hard part. Also, it's such a slow process I'm personally in favor of an actual revolution, a change in power in a relatively short amount of time. I think this system of government has to be changed, it's time to explore other options. It's not democracy, never was, never will be and some of us want democracy and deserve a chance to have our say. I don't think we can waste time because those in control are committing crimes, killing people, stealing wealth and gaining more power.
I also favor a global revolution, and when I say revolution I'm not talking violence, far from it. We Serfs are all in the same boat and we need to get out of it together. Money and wealth rule the earth and that has to end. Rule by the rich has to end.
Anyway, putting that out there for the fun of it.
Welcome to C99.

revolution is (has been) underway for some time now. Keep in mind that historically many different things happen leading to a revolutionary time; some of them take years. For example, I've been describing the rise of the oligarchy for over 20 years now and for much of that time the typical reaction included people talking about my tin foil hat or calling me a conspiracy theorist, etc. That doesn't happen anymore. A plurality of people have come to understand what's happening. The revolution is here.

It's like that old saying, we'll know it when we see it. For now, the mafia at the top is still making out and gaining power through wealth. I also have been warning about oligarchy and plutocracy for many years and have seen over and over people say the revolution is here, I've seen it since the sixties. But the ruling class show goes on, it always has. People have been saying for centuries the same thing but the chains stay on the serfs by the wealthy.
The real revolution is going to seek to overturn their power and give the power to the people, not to politicians and their wealthy controllers. It's going to take something on a grand scale to overcome that.

Hi Ray. I found myself nodding in full agreement, and what particularly resonated is the description of the financialization of our "economy." The size of global derivatives is staggering -- in the hundreds of trillions of dollars -- far more than global GDP. Most all of it is "trading" in dark pools and private exchanges, free of most regulation. I think this will bring down our global financial system and the dislocations will be staggering.

But look at how divided we are as a country. And they worked hard to allow that to happen.

Libtards ate what they call progressives and say that we all want free stuff. While progressives think that we need to take care of the poor, let women choose if they want a child and the other things that we champion, the conservatives don't want their taxes going towards helping people and that includes when they make abortion harder to get, they don't want their taxes going towards feeding and sheltering them.
I have seen comments that say if a family is too poor to feed and shelter their kids then don't have them. But they are happy when PP is shit down and women can't get BC.

The tea party was upset first with the bank bailouts and then Obama care, yet when progressives created OWS, they cheered when it was brutally broken up.

Both sides wer upset with the government's over reach but couldn't come together.
Somehow we have to get both parties to see that we are being screwed by the elites and the corporations.
After that happens, we have a chance to get a revolution.
That's how I see it.

Harris is unburdened of speaking going forward.

and you're right here, it always has done that. And you make the great point, reinforced by that book I just read by Thomas Frank, of how much the Tea Party and Progressives actually DO have in common. We all see we are being screwed, but the propaganda machine, the media, keeps all of that discussion to form and not substance - ie, blame brown people, female people or anyone you can paint as "other" and somehow make all government responsible for just those issues, scream partisan politics at the top of your lungs and make everything about "winning" for your "party" and again, no substance to that. The Tea Party blames Liberals and Liberals blame the Tea Party, and behind it all is the grinning face of the banker, who donates to both parties and wins every single time. While we're distracted with gay marriage, they're distracted by abortion, and the bankers laugh all the way to the bank. (And I am in no way saying those things are not important, but when they become the biggest focus we've already lost the battle.)

And Frank's point at the end of the day is really, there is NO OTHER PLACE for any of us to go. Not on the Dem side, but not on the Repuke side either. The only winners are the money. So we fight partisan politics and think things will really change, lather, rinse, repeat. Even parts of the Tea Party see the corruption, they're just taught to blame the Dem for that, and in so many ways, they're correct to do so. That is the final piss off for me, the Dem party has participated wholeheartedly in its own demise.

I'm happy that Kos put out the ban hammer. The best and brightest people are here and there are many more diaries and different subject matter that has gone missing from TOP.
Plus we don't have to put up with the cheerleaders of the establishment.

I have been aware of the deep state for some time and realize that the presidents are mainly puppet heads for the corporate executives.
There was a corporate coup many decades back and as Ray has pointed out, they are taking the masks off.
And I think one reason that they militarized the police is to get around Posse Comatitus. Not that they wouldn't not use the military. Isn't there already one unit designed to work in the US?

been warning us about the true nature of the system, about how it will not hesitate to take its mask off if necessary (to protect the status quo). In my own experience the challenge I've seen during almost 20 years is that when pointing out that once a government takes certain steps (claiming the right to assassinate citizens extra-judicially, curtailing or elimination habeas corpus when it claims to right to detain people indefinitely, deploying a massive, all-seeing surveillance police state system, war profiteering, torture, war crimes), if those steps match the definition of fascism, then that's what you have.

But people get confuse in the partisanship game. If Bush uses drones, then we're talking about war crimes; if Obama expands their use exponentially, then we're talking a principled leader protecting our young men and women from having to go to war.

In reality (as Chris Hedges' argues) we've been in a proto-fascist trajectory for years now, and are in the process of fully transitioning to corporate state fascism, regardless of which party rules the country.

site. I got shouted down once when I told a bunch of ex-pats in Mexico that your vote doesn't matter as much as your wallet. That was in 2008. Now, several of them seem to think I was at least partially correct.

I came to full realization that the corporations were openly in control when the so-called "religious freedom" bills were passed and waiting for the governors signatures in Arizona and Indiana. In both cases, corporations stepped in and the governors backed down. This was gleefully reported on my local "liberal" NPR station, and I thought to myself -- wow, we have just readily openly accepted corporate rule. Most people tacitly accept that boycotting stores is a more effective way of protesting than marching or rallying.

What a world.

is the effect that 24/7 corporate media propaganda has on the population. I've read many, many books, articles. As I mentioned above, I've read Chris Hedges, Henry Giroux, Bill Moyers, Sheldon Wolin, and many others. I've been trying to understand how the system works, seeking the truth, having an open mind. I've gone to countless rallies, protests, including Occupy Wall Street; talked to many activists throughout the years. And I've concluded that the number one way, the most effective way the oligarchy controls the population is through corporate media propaganda.

I feel so strongly about this that I consider being exposed to 5 minutes of news programming by ALL corporate media (including PBS, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, NBC, FoxNews, et al) tantamount to subjecting oneself to PsyOps. It is a powerful weapon.

I've determined that in my activism the number one task is to get this message out and do everything I can to discredit the corporate media.

recently pretended to be a "liberal" network are even more insidious, more damaging when it comes to the progressive agenda because their "programming" or "content" has the effect of lowering the "cognitive" guard on unsuspecting audiences.

Once that happens, they are more able to manipulate people with yes, propaganda.

When it comes to truth-telling the dkos format has a fatal flaw: the focus on electing Democrats; any type of Democrat. That approach clashes with progressivism which focuses on addressing (and combating) social injustices. And when it comes to combating injustice, there is nothing more important than to having an accurate understanding of the true nature of the system. You can't do that without the truth, no matter where it leads, who it makes uncomfortable, and which powers or interests it threatens.

Even more and better writers can be attracted to this place. The more voices the better. I would love to see ways to increase membership not just from disgruntled kossacks but from a broad spectrum of people. Maybe I will work on my daughter. She is a big Bernie supporter and very into social media. And she is a much better progressive than me. Plus she's a natural salesperson if she believes in the product, and the content here is very good and will only get better.

And thanks for even mentioning me with the others above. Humbling.

Hi Ray,
Good to see you here.
I want to thank you for this article:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/4/30/1205881/-The-Problem-With-Watchi...
It was a step in my journey from being baffled about politics to, well, hopefully being less baffled. Probably the DK diary that influenced me the most in my 8 years there.

Hello Ray it has been along time. You were on my required reading list at GOS. I have missed your thought provoking writing.

Here in the Northwest we have really begun to have more of a alternate economy. It began shortly after the 2008 election when the economy began to collapse. It began as the slow food movement in the Willamette Valley that has become so entrenched big ag. is actually running advertising against it. It has progressed on into buy local. How can I get the most bang for my buck within my community. It leads us to buy local and has spawned many small businesses.

I am not sure where it is all heading but it really appears the Pacific Northwest is heading it's own direction and that may be a dangerous course for us.

We're new to the Willamette Valley, here by choice (decided we'd missed the window to be expats). Food and related issues were major factors in the decision algorithm of where to go.

Until this election I really had no idea how far we had crept away from the rest of the country. Though based on what I read there are other places perhaps a bit smaller that have begun to form similar systems.

Should it continue to grow it could marginalize the greater economy in time.

To think we have a republican to thank for it. Tom McCall literally saved farming in the Willamette Valley so we could benefit. If global warming continues we may have some of the only viable farmland in the country.

OccupyStephanie mentioned his bio, Fire at Eden's Gate, and it's on my list.

The young man who's helping us plan and plant our food-growing space was raised by an herbalist, creates his own soil mixes (beautiful stuff), and is tied in to organics here and to people who are producing food crops specifically adapted to the Willamette Valley (e.g., a short-season green pepper).

Vermont was a little as you describe in operating outside the traditional economy. We looked for Vermont with better weather; I think we found it.

I have been an organic farmer for 25 years. My contribution to the cause has been selecting out open pollinated seeds that will grow well here. My farm is on the Olympic Peninsula but the same maritime climate applies.

I am still messing around with things that aren't supposed to grow here. It is great to have the collaboration that is happening now.

If I understand Camus correctly (doubtful!) we might as well choose the direction we feel is the best, so some of us will be involved in party politics, some of us will call for no voting at all as a statement, some will organize outside of politics, some of us will just yell, some will look for a way to overthrow the system.

But whichever we choose, I think we all agree something's terribly wrong with this "land of the free".

All I can say is that I write from my heart and I try to do everything I can to be accurate and truthful (and honest). As I mentioned above, words fail when it comes to describing what it feels like getting this kind feedback about my writing. Either way, I can see that there is a lot of talented writers and activists here and that the founders/admins of this site have set the stage for it to become a force to be reckon with when it comes to progressive activism and intellectual heft. I'm very glad to be here!

I have a really big smile and a happy heart! Ray is here! I really missed you at the 'almost a' CIA guys place after you were gone. I have thoroughly enjoyed your opinions and writing. Welcome the hell here man!

About your diary. To think that those with power, the kings, the Caesars, the rulers do not look ahead and plan together with others of the 'elite', for their advantage, is mind bogglingly stupid to my thinking. Throughout history this is shown true and should be self evident to all.

I fear however that our plight is much graver than who has all the money. I fear we are at a confluence of life prolonging technologies, climate disaster and ,as you say, human behavior, leading us to an extinction (or near extinction) of Homo Sapien Sapien and the birthing of Homo Evolutis, who master their own DNA. The elites ride out the storm in their 'Galt's Gulch' and emerge from their refuge into a new garden of Eden, devoid of others, a world of their own.
I believe we are much closer to this confluence of historical realities than we think.

Sounds crazy I guess, but then I think, the death camps sounded crazy too before their 'human behavior' became known.

In any case, the elites have the time and resources to plot and scheme, and they do, have no doubt. (Heritage foundation, john birch Society i.e.) While the vast majority of humanity's time is sent focusing on everyday survival, the plotters profit. The Security State is a reality. Unless we put that Security State back under the Constitution we have no hope. I don't think phone banks and networks will do that. I have little hope, save one. That leaders emerge with vision and plans to save ourselves from the ruling elite. They need to step up and we need to rally to them. I believe Senator Bernie Sanders is one of those precious few leaders.
Anyway, glad you're here Ray Smile

The same thoughts cross my mind on regular basis, but please consider that there is absolutely something happening out there and it is not being televised. It rose out of the ashes of OWS with Bernie holding the banner and it grows stronger with every 15-20K rally he holds. The guy owns Seattle! All those folks may not show up at the voting booth but they have heard the message - and they can't unhear it, it makes sense to them, they're pissed and now they know that they are not alone. It won't be easy and it won't be quick and the time to do something to stop the human sacrifices required by the 0.1% is already behind schedule, but there's a different vibe in the air. Maybe the impending financial crisis will push things over the edge and the people won't be so apathetic this time when it comes to bailing those bastards out.

In the 60's the youth were fighting for their very lives. The draft. The war. The youth were highly motivated and rightfully so. Today the dangers are just as deadly, though perhaps not as sudden as a bullet from an AK-47 in a rice paddy. Climate change, the lack of security of our water and food systems, economic insecurity, healthcare insecurity, all of these, and more, are the direct causes of death for countless numbers.
The youth then were right and the youth of today are right. The dirty fucking hippies were right!
I'm not long for this world now, I hope to make it November to vote, I think I will. I'd like to see something big happen right for us before I go. Like electing Bernie Sanders.
I also hope the youth of today will not judge us older folk too harshly. Just as a large portion of the youth today are awake and aware, so it once was. We did what we could. I wish we could have done more. I hope the young can accomplish more. It's your time now. You'll have to stand up. Those of us who've been fighting all along will support you. We may not be able to stand with you in the street but we stand with you nonetheless.

Been scared and battered.
My hopes the wind done scattered.
Snow has friz me,
Sun has baked me,
Looks like between 'em they done
Tried to make me
Stop laughin', stop lovin', stop livin'--
But I don't care!
I'm still here!

It is important for people of goodwill to come to grips with the true nature of the ruling elite. It is as depraved, corrupt, and despotic as any ruling elite has been throughout the ages, from the beginning of civilization. One should not confuse the fact that they are not storming people's doors, putting hoods on activists, grabbing them and taking them to torture chambers (yet), with them lacking both the willingness and ability to do it. They will do so at any moment, if they have to. And unfortunately, while the citizens were asleep on the wheel, the ruling elite has put into place the legal and technological infrastructure which will make it easier to turn on the switch on the turnkey fascist state they have built.

Second, one must understand that the ruling elite shares megalomaniacal, sadistic, and genocidal tendencies. I'm using those words very carefully. People don't have to agree with them, but I want to make sure it is clear that that is my understanding of the nature of the ruling elite...

Most importantly, keep in mind that these monsters could actually destroy 80, 85, 95 percent of the earth, the environment, resources, societies, and they could still isolate themselves for a thousand years in protected enclaves. This is very important to understand, and is the reason we the people need to stop them before they destroy us all.

i think it would take way less than a thousand years before they began to turn on each other, given the characteristic tendencies that you ascribe to them (which i tend to agree with, being the granddaughter of holocaust survivors).
