Open Raw - Late 70's-80's Art, Street, Punk, Pop, Wavey, Music and a bit of present day politics

In my intermittent ongoing OT series on visual populist? art I have now arrived at the beginning point that triggered both this series and my graphic art so called career. The Russians are coming! Not now but then. So I was sick of being a waitress and went to art school as I was a half ass good artist who wanted to make a buck or two. After enrolling in every freaking art school in LA, from LA City College to Otis (then +Parsons) and Art Center, a traveling show From Russia with Love came to the LACMA. I took myself to the museum on Wilshire Blvd paid my 15$ and had a minor art mind blow. They rocked. They being the Russian artists that made some great art after the revolution and before the Stalin eras godawful art. Bauhaus, Baby Russian style. So this art a show came to La around the same time in the late 70's as the punks were starting to musically mix it up and everybody was sick of Disco and slick airbrushed art.

Here's my fav. dirty commie rat artist El Lissititsky

el lissititzky 1_0.jpg

El Lissitzky 1890-1941

Russian painter, typographer, architect and designer. Born in Polshinok and grew up in Vitebsk. Studied architecture at the Polytechnic in Darmstadt 1909-14, then returned to Moscow where he began to work in an architect's office. Also began in 1917 to illustrate Jewish books for children, at first in a style influenced by Chagall and popular prints. In 1919 appointed professor of architecture and applied art at the art school in Vitebsk, where Malevich was a colleague, and collaborated with him in the Unovis group. Began to make abstract pictures which he called Prouns, as 'the interchange station between painting and architecture'. Sent to Berlin in 1921 to establish contacts between artists in the USSR and Germany. Met Schwitters, Moholy-Nagy, van Doesburg and many others, and had his first one-man exhibition at the Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hanover, 1923. Designed books and periodicals with radical innovations in typography and photomontage. Spent 1924-5 in Switzerland, then returned to Moscow.

This Russian artist seems to be the father of all these artists who slipped in before the gates of totalitarianism closed. Socialist Realism sucks.

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. - Friedrich Nietzsche -

made one of the coolest records of the late 70's. It was a radical departure from where he had been, by embracing the punk aesthetic of the day to great effect. Loved this record as a kid.

So, I offer some thematic stuff for you dear:

Holy shit did this album rock:

the Russians are actual people? I only ask because we obviously don't think anyone in the middle east is a human being unless they hail from Saudi Arabia or Israel! All those other two-legged creatures are bugs to be quashed.

Nice art from those "others," Shaharazade! Have a beautiful day! Pleasantry

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Yesterday I noted Hightower Lowdowner" reporting" on the Dakota pipeline. No mention of Stein - Baraka. Then I found this on Common Dreams. Could not let it pass.

Hightower is someone I respected, "but (now) I just don't know".

Gee whiz Jim, what's a boy from Orange to think?

Here you write a great post on Standing Rock, and do not mention the one presidential candidate who was there. I don't mean J. Jackson.

Apparently you missed that Stein and Baraka were there to support the protesters.

How did that happen? You used to be such a sharp guy. Are you with HER now, Jim?

somewhere around 2 am last night when shaz was finishing up, the whole thing went screwy. She uttered the magic words, famous throughout history, "#$^% it, I'm going to bed".

I think she'll probably edit this, either today or maybe for next week, adding the bits that got lost.

As, someone who has difficulty with endings of all kinds, I thank you so much!

I didn't read a post just now; I read a life lesson I very much needed right now!

I slept not, vomiting all night. Another attack of cholecystitis. This morning I heard a big CRAACK, and thump. Just found out the the oak is driveway-blocking and about 12" diameter and just missed the shed. Half-strip of a smaller tree. Now I am blocked in, no ER visit. A call for chainsaw help went to machine. Fun times.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

Hi riverlover that is bummer news, hope you have some way to restore electrolytes and feel better soon. For me ginger ale helps, tiny sips at a time. Over ice if possible. May the chainsaws arrive soon and clear the way. You seem good at keeping in touch, keep going.

Maybe having that gall bladder out would be better in the long run, I don't know. I remember wanting my appendix out when it was bursting my gut, by any means necessary.

Peace & Love

edit: remembering. Smile

No chainsaws, no calls, and it's getting dark. BUT: I got a purchase offer on the cottage! Too low, but I am countering. I scanned in the 14 pages and immediately lost the file. And No auto-feed on the newish scanner. Try again. It might be sold before 2017!

If you don't have ginger ale, try a little ginger in hot water, a ginger tea. Call 911 if you have to. Paramedics will get you over, or around the fallen tree.

From my link,

A major stumbling block is the plan to create new commercial courts to handle disputes between companies and national governments.

Wallonia fears they would give too much leverage to multinationals. It also wants more protection for Walloon farmers, who would face new competition from Canadian imports.

From your link, maybe it was "among other things" I hope.

The Walloons were concerned that the trade pact could reduce health and environmental standards and give too much power to multinational companies. There were also concerns about Canadian pork and beef imports flooding into Wallonia's agricultural region.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel announced Thursday that an agreement had been reached, which among other things provides guarantees for farmers.

No further details... thanks NPR. Meh.
