If you search "octopus" on the internet archive, it is amazing how many squid you get. This implies that 8=10 and, hence, 2=0. If 2=0, then 21/2 is also zero. Per the pythagorean theorem, this leads us inescapably to the conclusion that 1=0 and since 1 times any number is the same number, all numbers must be zero too. Math is dead.

Solomon Linda Mbube

OK, so this is the first column after we return, and I'm doing it before we leave so I don't feel rushed to get it out while we unpack (and recover). Of course, I'm rushing to get it out while we finish packing. It is familiar, not just the day, because each month has an 8, but the artists and songs, which should make it easier, but it makes it harder, and I get to the end and there is Solomon Linda with Mbube and now I'm gonna have to do the whole thing over.

Solomon Linda was a South African singer, musician and composer who wrote Mbube which became the inspiration for theMbube style of isicathamiya a cappella. He formed a group with which he performed which came to the attention of somebody who saw to it that Mbube became that 1939 record. Recognize it? I did. Damn, time to deep dive

In due time, the illustrious Alan Lomax discovered that record and gave it to Pete Seeger, whereupon he and the Weavers then began performing something of a translation thereof, retitled based on their attempt at a phonetic rendition of the chorus, the zulu word "uyembube". It became as popular as anything the Weavers did, so they put in on a 1952 album which became a hit. A hit!, for the Weavers. wow. So, first the Kingston Trio, and then assorted others covered that version. I mean assorted, even Bert Kaempfert and his orchestra on the "Swinging Safari" album, Hugh Masakela, Chet Atkins, Chris Barber, Jimmy Rodgers, Jimmy Dorsey, Desmond Decker, Glen Campbell, Yma Sumac, The Springfields (featuring Dusty herself) and more

Meanwhile, various african performers recorded their own covers of the original, both as recorded and as rendered in their own native tongue or dialect.

The spinning wheels means the server is trying to decide whether to take a dump or get off the pot. When that happens stop the server request by clicking the "x" stop icon in your browser, then try voting again one comment at a time, let one finish before clicking another. That'll usually help.

The inequity went on for years, with Linda’s survivors never questioning the meager royalty checks they received (from 1991-2000, the years that The Lion King ruled on screen, VHS, DVD and stage, they got approximately $17,000). In 2000, South African journalist Rian Malan wrote an exposé for Rolling Stone, embarrassing several major players in the music publishing world and attracting lawyers to Linda’s family.

In 2002, director Francois Verster furthered the cause with A Lion’s Trail, a documentary tracing the long journey of “Mbube” to “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Justice seemed to be a court case away. But it was no simple matter. Not only had Linda signed over the copyright to his song, but his wife and daughters had twice done the same in the years following. Ownership of “Mbube,” “Wimoweh” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” was a tangled mess. When lawyers finally sorted it out in February 2006, Linda’s survivors began receiving the compensation they deserve (the settlement applies to royalties dating back to 1987).

Sadly, there was one final injustice—in 2001, Linda’s daughter Adelaide died of AIDS at age 38, unable to afford a potentially life-saving anti-viral treatment.

When Solomon Linda wrote a song about lions preying on cattle, he could never have imagined the ultimate irony—that he was inviting a much more savage breed of predator into his own life.

Right on! Yes to Indigenous Peoples Day. Columbus knew little, discovered nothing and destroyed much. He did so with the blessing and encouragement of an abysmally evil Pope Gregory, one of the few instances in which it is appropriate to use the word "evil".

www.AskBobRankin.com had warned us in his weekly email recently about the latest Windows 10 update fiasco so had to laugh at your funny haha. Thanks, I needed that!

FWIW we recently went through the hoohah of applying for a ballot, got it pretty quickly, then voted by mail. No Greens on our ballot, so needless to say I was less than enthusiastic about voting. jb and I agreed that it was good to good to do the online research on the candidates though.

Getting close and a little excited. Even though we are still recovering physically and in no mood to go back any time soon, getting the dates we want for Zambia and South Africa tied down, and reserving the campsites way ahead in Kruger require getting on this way out ahead.
