Hansen and his collaborators might be right about the superstorms, since the energy imbalance between the equatorial and polar regions is mostly resolved through ocean currents - and only a much smaller portion by atmospheric circulation. If the ocean part is reduced the energy disparity is going to get addressed by other means.

What Hansen doesn't really mention about what happens when the North Atlantic circulation is shut down is that when it has happened before, the near-immediate and centuries-long effect is that things (in most of N. America and Europe, anyway) get significantly COLDER:

The Younger Dryas was the most recent and longest of several interruptions to the gradual warming of the Earth's climate since the severe LGM, about 27,000 to 24,000 years BP. The change was relatively sudden, taking place in decades, and it resulted in a decline of temperatures in Greenland by 4 to 10°C (7.2 to 18°F)[3] and advances of glaciers and drier conditions, over much of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. It is thought[4] to have been caused by a decline in the strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, which transports warm water from the Equator towards the North Pole, in turn thought to have been caused by an influx of fresh, cold water from North America to the Atlantic.

What the exact triggering event was is controversial.

According to the above link, a weakening of monsoon activity occurred in the Northern Hemisphere and warming increased in the Southern:

The North Atlantic region cooled during this interval with a weakening of Northern Hemisphere monsoon strength. The reduction in northward heat transport warmed the Southern Hemisphere due to a process commonly referred to as the bipolar-seesaw (e.g., Clark et al., 2002).

Russia shipped 20 million tons of goods on the Northern Sea Route in 2018 and expects it to increase to 80 million tons by 2024. China's large shipping company, COSCO, has been shipping huge windmill blades and towers to the UK via the NSR. It only takes 10 to 12 days instead of the 30 plus days to ship via the Malacca Straights and Suez Canal. That uses only 1/3 of the tons of CO2 producing bunker fuel. China is already working on dozens of ships to take advantage of this short cut to Europe.
