Hillbilly to Kill Globalization

I recently read an interesting article by the conservative J D Vance. He made a stir a couple years ago with a semi autobiographical book on growing up in a factory town as the progeny of the American south. The book didn't impress me so much as his characters are plenty familiar to most people blue collar in America. But I did recognise the name and read the article.

I've no idea of the publication, probably some R wing web site, I don't care, I read every and anything. What did strike me was his support of unions, and dislike of globalization. His disdain for the Republican Powers that be and his dislike of libertarian economics.

Trump has not carried through on much of what he suggested he was going to improve. Wages are still down, health care is still bad, and on top of it we have an epidemic. I've no idea if Biden will win or even stay out of the old folks home long enough to win, I do know he is the safe Democratic Establishment candidate, ie Mr Globalist. There is still a lot of impetuous for a populist worker oriented government. At sometime things will happen, when they do they'll have support from a broad swath of the American public, all the way from lefty socialists over to J D Vance Hillbillies.

While I am not with him on everything, I am on many. Speaking against big donors and globalization and promoting unions. Wow.

There is also a climate change reason to move away from globalization. Dr. James Hansen talks about the ice melt shutting down the North American current, therefor causing superstorms in the ocean.

If the oceans are full of superstorms, ocean shipping will end.

Thanks for the essay!

reducing shipping times by up to 50%. Globalization will not decrease but it will be accomplished on different terms. Nations will become closer and more intimately intertwined, culturally and economically.

The current hegemonic system where there is one super power trying to control and direct the entire global economy will collapse. Instead, it will be a multi-polar world where nations can contribute and share resources to the benefit of each.

Unfortunately, there is a very powerful dinosaur which is refusing to yield it's vaunted position. The coranavirus pandemic may just be the push required. Or it may be the excuse for the dinosaur to go on a rampage.

I do agree with Dr. Hansen's view that nuclear energy is one way to create the necessary energy demands of a modern society and at the same time ameliorate global warming caused by CO2 emissions. Solar and wind will not be sufficient plus they both have significant environmental costs for their relatively short lifespans. They both require substantial amounts of the rare earths which comes with extremely high environmental costs. (The magnets used in gearless wind generators require neodymium and dysprosium which are mined almost exclusively in China.)

If only the richest 1 million can figure out a good way to get rid of the extra 6.5 billion inhabitants on this earth and just keep 1 billion or so to service their needs. The death rate of the current pandemic won't cut it. It appears it is not as high as was originally believed. But it will help with reducing the financial load from retirees and other non-productive workers. /s

SARS2 is a great friend to the upper class (there is only one upper class, although it comes various flavors). Mortality largely from ages 60+. Cull the herd of the sick, burdensome useless eaters. Be done with them. When this round of plandemic fails to knock off enough of the geezers, next winter comes the follow-on round to sweep more from the land of the living at an accelerated rate.

Project 2030 or something like that. Allow the servants enough family and helpers to keep them motivated. Starvation in the end is a poor motivator to productivity.

Snark is the truth cloaked in a joke. Snark is the world seen through the lens of sarcasm. Snark is here for you to express yourself, saying things you probably shouldn’t say, but in a way that the world will let you get away with.

Snark can be edgy. Snark can be funny. Snark can be cute. Snark can cut a little deep, but never to be mean, just to get to the bottom of things. Like a shark, snark can rise to the calm surface of the water and bite you when you were least expecting it.

@CB I ripped the cloak off the truth too rapidly. Won't happen again...maybe.

You might want to look up Dryas Events.

Hansen and his collaborators might be right about the superstorms, since the energy imbalance between the equatorial and polar regions is mostly resolved through ocean currents - and only a much smaller portion by atmospheric circulation. If the ocean part is reduced the energy disparity is going to get addressed by other means.

BUT

What Hansen doesn't really mention about what happens when the North Atlantic circulation is shut down is that when it has happened before, the near-immediate and centuries-long effect is that things (in most of N. America and Europe, anyway) get significantly COLDER:

The Younger Dryas was the most recent and longest of several interruptions to the gradual warming of the Earth's climate since the severe LGM, about 27,000 to 24,000 years BP. The change was relatively sudden, taking place in decades, and it resulted in a decline of temperatures in Greenland by 4 to 10°C (7.2 to 18°F)[3] and advances of glaciers and drier conditions, over much of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. It is thought[4] to have been caused by a decline in the strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, which transports warm water from the Equator towards the North Pole, in turn thought to have been caused by an influx of fresh, cold water from North America to the Atlantic.

source

What the exact triggering event was is controversial.

According to the above link, a weakening of monsoon activity occurred in the Northern Hemisphere and warming increased in the Southern:

The North Atlantic region cooled during this interval with a weakening of Northern Hemisphere monsoon strength. The reduction in northward heat transport warmed the Southern Hemisphere due to a process commonly referred to as the bipolar-seesaw (e.g., Clark et al., 2002).

Wonder what Hansen has to say about that?

as long as the ice doesn't exceed 4.3 meters (14.1 feet).

Russia shipped 20 million tons of goods on the Northern Sea Route in 2018 and expects it to increase to 80 million tons by 2024. China's large shipping company, COSCO, has been shipping huge windmill blades and towers to the UK via the NSR. It only takes 10 to 12 days instead of the 30 plus days to ship via the Malacca Straights and Suez Canal. That uses only 1/3 of the tons of CO2 producing bunker fuel. China is already working on dozens of ships to take advantage of this short cut to Europe.

TWICE as powerful: Russia to build new monster nuclear icebreaker for Arctic sea route
23 Apr, 2020

The world's most powerful nuclear icebreaker is set to be built in Russia – again. The new vessel, to be delivered in late 2020, will dwarf the power of existing icebreakers, with its new 120-Megawatt powerplant.

Dubbed 'Leader,' the new Project 10510 icebreaker got the green light on Thursday, when Russia's Far East Zvezda shipyard and the Rosatomflot company signed the contract for its construction. Due to the coronavirus restrictions in place, the contract was signed via video link.
...
Russia is the only country in the world that operates a large fleet of nuclear icebreakers. Such vessels are significantly bigger and more powerful than their conventionally-powered counterparts, thus being able to operate in the thick ice sheets of the Arctic. The nuclear engines allow the vessels operate autonomously for long periods without the need for frequent refueling.

I just did the math. 120 Megawatts is equal to 160,923 HP. Damn!

Nukes than you seem to be.

Overall, though, Russia has used their resources far more sensibly than America has in a whole range of fields.

As is going to be evident soon enough, while Russia is not completely immune to the effects of an economic downturn, it is by far the best-positioned of any major country in that regard.

They have been running balanced budgets, have minimal debt, partly in response to US (stupidly misguided) sanctions they have revamped much of their industry and reduced dependence on imports. Big gold reserves and a wealth of other resources.

Now, if they could just comp me into a five star hotel suite and compromise me with a bevy of high grade hookers as part of their plan for world domination...

The oligarchs who ran kompromat operations had to get the hell out of Russia real quick when Putin became president. Putin was going to tax the piss out of them and put them in his gulags if they didn't pay up. Not to worry though. You can still find them in London, New York and Miami buying up expensive property with their ill-gotten rubles.

If you are still interested you can contact Trump. (Unfortunately Epstein is not available at the moment. He is taking an extended vacation with Ghislaine in Israel.) Trump has a complete list of their phone numbers and addresses in his office safe at Trump Towers. He can put you in touch with Boris and Nastya.
