Friday Photography - Sunlit and Rain-Laden

The weather extremes of the past week were dizzying. We got loads of much needed rain in preparation for the next week of blazing sun. In the top photo the sunlight is striking a Nikau palm, and in the second photo the Kanuka blossoms are dripping with rain. The appearance of the white blossoms always remind me of snow dusted trees in winter. How are you all in your little corners of the world?

If you have access to Netflix and are in the mood for some really good comedy, check out Ronny Chieng.

If not maybe you want to watch this 5 min. you tube piece.

beautiful pix Janis. It looks sooooo lush, like a birder's dream. Paradise. A way down south here, west of San Antonio 75 mi., we just had 2 mornings at 16 deg.F! Freeze yer ferns. Last Sat. and Sun. it was record hot 85dF. It is a weather roller coaster here in winter. Most have it worse so we can't complain. Time to eat - tamales from mamacita in town, and maybe a Corona. Be back to put up pics later.

I'm glad we here share the same time in space on this rollercoaster.

@janis b great song Janis. The tamales are the best I have had in decades. Rosie has a taco trailer here in our townlet. She is from Durango, and that is probably where you have to go to get food like hers. Incredible. You would never want a commercial tamale again. The spicy heats my head up. LOL Christmas time she takes tamale orders from everyone in town so I make sure to get some.

Love the lighting on the Nikau palm.
I'm doing good in my little corner of the world. The mild southern Ca. temps have brought the usual winter visitors.

But that was four hours ago when I was younger and full of hope.

Love the photos. Tell me again what camera you use, lens and if you use any filters. My big slr is a canon 40d and I'm not that pleased with the quality of the pictures.

@snoopydawg
For these shots I used a Nikon D500 with a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens and no filters.
Even though it's a little old your 40D is a good camera. Image quality has more to do with the quality of the lens than the camera body. If it came with a standard kit lens when you bought it you might want to upgrade to a better lens.

and I've been using it since I got my first slr. Might be the lightning that is causing the problems for me though. I used it on my film one and it took great photos. I looked at some newer pocket cameras and none of them had a viewfinder. I like using it because I can better frame my photos and in bright sun the screen doesn't show the picture well enough. But boy have prices gone down on them since they first came out. A canon eos with two lenses for under $300? lol they were over $1,000 not long ago.

@Socialprogressive Outstanding photos SP! Beautiful! Whaddabird! For those that don't know, Brown Pelicans dive into the water from 10-20 feet or more grabbing fish with a spectacular plunge dive (I think SP has posted pix before). White Pelicans feed by dipping, while swimming in groups herding the fish (good vids on youtube). White are much larger, with wingspans nearing 8'! Amazingly they are highly migratory soaring on thermals like cranes. One of the biggest heaviest flying birds in America. SD, you should be able to see them in spring and summer, I thought there used to be a big nesting colony at either Salt Lake or Bear River.

I haven't been to any of them since I was a kid. It's going to warm up later this week and I'll try to get there. But our air quality is horrible right now, but it might be better light. Beus pond though is just up the street from me so I'll go there first. I just thought of this. I met Danny there once a few years ago. Fun times.

I posted a shot of white pelicans herding a few weeks ago and I do have shots of brown pelicans I've posted previously, unfortunately none while diving for fish but that is on the to do list.

This dinosaur lives in my back yard. Had to relocate him to mow the weeds. He's about 3 inches long (a teenager) and commonly called a horned toad or horny toad, although actually a lizard (Phrynosoma platyrhinos). They have a unique defense mechanism -- when threatened, they'll squirt blood from their eyes to scare off meanies, and they can inflate their bodies with air sort of like a pufferfish to make themselves look bigger and badder.

Common Peafowl, albino. Males are called Peacock, females Peahen. I don't know how the albinos could not have an inferiority complex. This is one a group that walks around town.

I've never seen an albino Peacock or newly emerged Cicada before. Thanks for the experience.

After JPR changed hands, they never would let me re-register. No clue as to why. Sounds as though it was just as well.
